well to start off in the offseason three head coaches left their respective spots in the Big 9 including Lecy (JM), Frutiger (Century) and Fish (Owatonna).
The Big 9 seems pretty wide open to most of the teams this season. It's really gonna depend on what teams can come out and win those early games for points. There's a lot of teams though that have graduated a lot of seniors and are going to have to find their identity as the season progresses.
Just based on returning players Rochester JM and Century seem to have the most returning talent. Both though loss their upperclassmen goalies in Bryan King for JM and Cam Sellnow for Century. My prediction for JM though is that they will pass the reigns down to junior Garvey, who saw action in the net last season and performed quite well as a sophomore. Century returns Kautz, Travis on the blueline and Jacobs, who were their top scorers last season.
After the two Rochester schools, the competition seems very open. Albert Lea lost a lot to graduation and Carlson, who might've been the best scorer in the Big 9 this season, went to Fairbanks NAHL. Wangen is still there in the net and Hacker should still be there for some offense. Faribault seems really shaky, no Helgeson, Lipinski or Forgaard. Their goalie situation seems questionable. A lot of horses on that team graduated, gonna need guys to step up in place of them.
I'm pretty unsure on Mayo and Owatonna. Mayo, they lost quite a bit in McMasters, Sederquest and Norman, but really I think they could end up anywhere, still quite a bit of guys on that team that saw ice time last season. Not sure if VanGalder graduated, but if he did whose in the net for them in Spartan country? I think Owatonna is gonna end up somewhere in the middle like last season. I honestly really don't know much about them at all.
Mankato West loses the most scoring out of the 10 teams, with Weber, Frentz and Rantanen gone, but they return an entire defense. Some talented young guns on that team coming up as well. I think West is gonna need time to click, goalie Zach Fox can keep them in games, but their gonna need to find a scoring punch. Winona's goalie situation seems like a mess, not sure who's gonna be in the net for them. There's a lot of holes to fill in Winona.
Interesting season for the Big 9 Crown, most of the teams have question marks, too early to call any favorites really. As always correct me if I'm wrong, sometimes lose track of whose graduating and what not.

I have only seen 3 big 9 teams play so far this year. I saw JM beat Winona and outplay but lose to Red Wing. I also saw Century lose to White Bear. This that being said I think it breaks down like this…
1-2, JM and Century
3-5,Mayo, Owatonna, West
6-7,Faribault, Albert Lea
8-10, East, Austin, Winona
Lots of games tonight. It will be fun to see who takes the big 9 crown this year with no major favorite

From what I have seen so far I would rank the top 5 like this:
1. Century
2. Albert Lea
3. JM
4. Mayo
5. West
Most years it comes down to the Rochester teams or Albert Lea taking the title. Mankato West will jump into the race once in a great while.
The Rochester teams have been watered down the last few years with players leaving to JRs early as with Albert lea this year that lost there top scorer. It's going to get even weaker for the Rochester teams if the city adds another school/team soon.

Well nearing the first half of the season it appears that the 3 rochester schools in the big 9 are the teams to beat and are favored to win the big 9. Century looks as if they are the better team overall at this point but are not far away from JM or Mayo. Mayo probably has the deeper team although they are young. Overall I would have to say that this season suggests that this is the worst year for the big 9 as for strength of teams and talent. At least last year there was Carlson (Albert Lea) and Rantanan (West) that exhibited some talent and high scoring ability. As far as I can see there is nobody in the big 9 at this level at all. For crying out loud even Austin will be in alot of games this year in the big 9 and not have to depend on lower level teams to compete with.
