"player decided to play high school hockey in his home area, with his youth hockey teammates, where he learned to play hockey"

If White Bear "Area" youth players have already learned all they need to play hockey,

What do they do in high school? Get bigger?

Might be a clue to White Bear's quarterfinal success?

And what's an "home area" anyway?

That's sort of obvious in the case of most suburban hockey assocations, isn't it?

Mahtomedi Youth Hockey Association's area is the same as the Mahtomedi school district's area. Same in White Bear Lake.

I know that YOU did not teach me or my friends to play hockey ...

our dads did along with their friends and volunteers.

How dare you try to tell us where to attend school!

Easy now. I'm fairly certain I didn't tell anyone where they can or should play hockey. All I did was lament the times when kids grow up somewhere, make friends in that area, learn to play their sport (and I'm not just referring to hockey -- Hopkins high school basketball also comes to mind) from committed parents and volunteers in that area, and then feel the need to play high school somewhere else -- usually for a "winner."

Yes, the good old days.

Like my dad playing hockey in Catholic grade & high school with his buddies.

I suppose he was wrong.

He married his high school sweetheart and moved to White Bear, volunteering, coaching and expanding the youth hockey program.

Though my dad lived in White Bear, he worked at 3M and sometimes shopped at the Maplewood Mall.

I suppose he was wrong.

He sent his kids to the nearest Catholic church and schools. Schools that miraculously exist considering the monopoly power held by government schools. Catholic schools that continuously shrink and have to close or merge the communities they serve in order to compete.

I suppose he was wrong.

Not only did my dad make big contributions expanding, leading and coaching in the local youth hockey program ... he volunteered with the Lions Club ... coached and expanded little league baseball ... and even started a Boy Scout Troop at the local Catholic Church/School ... always inviting and welcoming public school kids.

I suppose he was wrong.

Later, a White Bear public high school coach announced he was barring me and my more athletic buddies from future competitions once he learned our dads were sending us to Hill-Murray.

I suppose our dads were wrong.

Much earlier, my mom and I had seen some of my neighbors standing in front of a house, preventing a certain type of family from moving to White Bear. My mom took the opportunity to explain that even in White Bear we should be allowed to live, play hockey, go to church, and go to school wherever we want, no matter our race or religion.

I suppose she was wrong.

Must just be the nostalgia.
