Post by shotpassskate »

I am sure their is a thread already but I couldn't find it.
Does anyone know what the plan is in the games that are to be played on Lake Tonka cann't be played their because of the lack of ice, where will the games be played at?

This is correct, they are going to play in the Excelsior Commons. If the weather makes the game unplayable, it will be moved to Pagel.

Sources say highly likely that the games will be played at Pagel now.

How so? looks like weather next week will be in high teens and mid twenties.. Tonka will do everything to have this one outside, dont want to be the 1st in 6 years to play inside.

Couple of thoughts:
How the heck are they gonna fit the spectators into that arena? They may have to set up monitors out in the (covered) football facility!

Does Tonka never get a break? A chance for redemption on home ice.

WBL vs GR as an appetizer? YUM!

Bummed out that the game isn't going to be outside. But it should still be a fun day of hockey. :)

Just wondering if anyone knows if people are going to get a refund of somekind? $15 to watch a single HS game, that now means very little is a little high. The funny thing is we ordered some shirts and sweatshirts as well as the tickets in November online and still have not gotten them. We have called the company in gods know where ( I think Colorado ) and left maybe a dozen messages and they do not return calls. It seams to be quite sketchy. Also, what is the capacity of the rink in Tonka?

Why are they having such problems making outdoor ice does anybody know? The forecast next week is for daytime temps to be in the single digits. Do they not deal with outdoor ice sheets there very often? Its to bad that this day has now become just another game in a cookie cutter rink if its the rink I just saw a picture of online. Fold out seating on one side, not much character. I am sure all the kids that were going to play in this are very bummed. It would be nice if they at least had the games at a rink with a little character and history and could seat a few more people. What about a day at Mariucci with tree HS game followed by a Gopher game. Now that would be a better idea then just giving up on the entire thing. Playing in that rink looks like a second sheet setup for most towns.

They were planning to put the rink on the Excelsior Commons which is a location where they do not normally have a rink. Lack of snow probably also contributed as that's usually used to seal the bottom of the boards when flooding. I would also bet the ground is not as frozen as they'd need as we've yet to be in single digits for any period of time. In general it's all about risk mitigation as at some point they had to make the call rather then make the full investment in the Excelsior site and then not be able to use it.

Pagel is a nice facility (was privately build through fundraising efforts of youth association) but won't be able to handle the crowd that was expected for outdoors hockey.

Thanks. I wonder what they are going to do if the arena can't hold the amount of ticket holders? We are coming from up North and well aware of hundreds if not more people who have purchased tickets already and were planning on attending this event. Wonder if we can get a refund? A long way to travel for just another game.

I wonder if the experience in Moorhead last year (warming temps and increasingly soft and torn up ice) has scared off the 'Tonka folks into making this early call.

Word on the street is saying that the people who have already purchased tickets will get a voucher with the difference in what they paid and what the cost of a normal game would be and the voucher can be used to buy merchandise or put towards the Jack Jablonski fund. Please do no quote me on this because this is just what I have been hearing.

I hope that isn't the case. We ordered Hockey Day stuff online almost 3 months ago and still haven't gotten it. The company charged our card in November the day we ordered too. Not a real good company in my opinion. As far as donating the ticket money that is decent idea but kind of a weard way of making people donate and not give them a refund. Why not just cancel the entire thing and just let the teams play each other at better times and at better locations. The people I have spoke with today have now decided not to go or just drive down and back for one game to watch their team. I wish they would have had a plan B . I at least hope there are some fans that do go. Most games in the cities have a tough time getting more then 1,500 fans at games 1,500 up north is a bad crowd. The last two games I have been at up north had over 3,000 per game. Will be kind of a downer to have less then that.

Deer hunter you obviously were not tuning into the tonka vs BSM game at pagel last night or been aware of the huge crowds there over the last 5 years. This rink is a awesome atmosphere with a big crowd. The overhead track makes it unique. As cool as a out door game is I like the #1 @ #2 match up in a normal setting.

It's different than Braemar and BIG but it ranks up there with my favorites.

Why would there only be 1 game? Aren't they still going to play all of them?

Are they going to do anything different then a normal HS game? Like something to make it an event. I know there are some youth teams from up north that have scheduled games down in the metro to coincide with hockey day this year. These youth teams will be at the event and games also. I haven't been to any north vs metro matchups with much atmosphere. Even the East vs MG game had good attendance but in a cookie cutter rink with seating on one side only and just lots of standing around the glass. If you haven't been to a game in that Grand Rapids rink when it is full you should try and get there for one. The game Thursday night was great well over 3,000. If the bands would have been there it would have been even better.

I'm assuming the Pagel ticket office will be selling tickets all week. Anyone have any info on the hours they'll be selling?

Are we sure that 1500 would be a bad crowd. I love hockey and am a northerner all the way, but in a lot, if not most rinks up north, 1500 would be quite a crowd. Ya, the bigger ones may pack 3000, especially the d1 rinks but I can think of maybe 6 hs rinks up north that might seat 3000.

I can't seem to find any ticket info for this game, I've tried calling both the school activity office and Pagel and haven't gotten an answer. The Hockey Day website doesn't say anything either. Does anyone know if there are even tickets available still?
