2012 Mr. Hockey
Moderators: Mitch Hawker, east hockey, karl(east)
All I've heard is that the voting for Mr. Hockey is done by NHL scouts and college coaches. Does anyone know if they use any specific criteria? Who has the highest pro upside? Who was the best High School player? Who they think will be the best college player? Just wondering if anyone has any insight into the specifics.keepyourheadup wrote:It seems to be pretty wide open right now, Both Peterson and Thomas have made a strong case so far. Randolph's chances (fair or not) are probably reduced due to playing with Toninato. Kloos has been pretty much a mirror image of a year ago when it comes to scoring. I can't remember a year that had as many likely candidates that chose to leave. As deserving as any of the boys mentioned are this list could easily contain names like, Lucia, Skjei, Rielly, Michealson, Walker and several more. It will make for lively discussion but I'll say Thomas, as he likely has the most NHL attributes that the voters like.
Not sure how they do voting, however, it should be the BEST HS PLAYER. Period. Just like the Heisman trophy in college football. Mr. Hockey shouldn't be "who has the best NHL potential" or "who is gonna be the best college player"Neuuman wrote:All I've heard is that the voting for Mr. Hockey is done by NHL scouts and college coaches. I agree with that statement. LN is playing much better hockey than they were in the beginning of the season. I think LS is gonna have a tough time with them come sections.longdistancespectator8 wrote:If Lakeville South can find a way to beat Lakeville North Kloos in my eyes has to win. Take him off that south team and they would have a hard time beating anyone.
If South is upset again then I think Randolph takes it home.

After compiling some statistics for the three most mentioned names a statistical breakdown looks something like this:
Randolph HS 80gp/153pts Elite 39gp/20pts Overall 119gp/173pts
Toninato HS 80gp/129pts Elite 44gp/48pts Overall 128gp/173pts
Kloos HS 65gp/187pts Elite 47gp/81pts Overall 112gp/268pts
Numbers can not tell the whole story, quality of competition and the team they play for are part of the equation.

There is a good chance that Toninato and Randolph will lose votes to each other. With them being on the same line and on what is likely the best team in the state, someone voting for Toninato could just as easily vote for Randolph. Whereas, with Kloos, he plays on a decent Lakeville South team against a fairly difficult schedule. However, he is the only metro player really mentioned in this topic so he will really not being losing votes to other players in his conference or area. In addition, he doesn't have the added issue of having a Mr. Hockey candidate on his line with Harvey's numbers down so much from last year.
Kloos hands down.
Led the Elite League in points.
Amazing player.
Team North had Randolph/Tont/Olson line

Not sure the Elite League has anything to do with it. It's a MN High School Hockey award which probably means regular season. Lakeville South losing to Eden Prairie last night hurts. At the beginning of the year I'm not sure anyone would have seen that loss coming. Lakeville South seems to have underperformed which could cost Kloos who was likely the preseason favorite. Great player but just not sure how the voters will see it.
Was Brock Nelson second in voting 2 years ago. He's done well going straight to D1 at UND.

I'm not sure you'll find universal agreement on that assertion - even with all the seniors they lost from last year, Eden Prairie remains Eden Prairie and everybody expected them to be good. Let's Play Hockey ranked Eden Prairie #8 and Lakeville South #14 in its preseason rankings, for example.observer wrote: Lakeville South losing to Eden Prairie last night hurts. It's also a bit hard to believe a single loss, in which Kloos did score two goals, should determine a season-long award.

Not so sure south has under performed. They have managed to stay close with the teams ranked ahead of them for the most part. If team success is part of the criteria Kloos doesn't really stand a chance. I don't know if Elite performance is factored in or not but rest assured many of those that vote also attended games and follow the league closely.
South had one really bad week, with the losses to Lakeville North and Prior Lake. The only game they weren't in was the loss to Edina, which was their first game but Edina's fourth. Their other losses - Breck, Eagan twice, and Eden Prairie - were competitive; both losses to Eagan were by one goal (although they were outshot badly in the first Eagan game).
I think everybody would agree that was a brutal week for South. But, Kloos had 3 goals and 4 assists in those two games, and the team had 8 goals. There's only so much one player can do to help his team win games. I personally don't think team performance or record should have anything to do with it. They have an award for team performance - the State Championship trophy given at the X in March. With that being said, all of the finalists named at the end of the year will deserve to be there.
