A bit off the topic, I see Eric Carlson from AL has only played 5 games since 11-26-11, for Fairbanks in the NAHL. Anyone know if he has been injured? Sick? It would just seem strange to leave high school early and not dress every game. Just wondering, I hope all is going well for him.

#1 Rochester Lourdes
Section Games:
-Red Wing: W 8-0
-New Prague: W 5-3
-Northfield: W 5-2
-Mankato West: W 7-1

Notables:
-St. Cloud Cathedral: W 4-1
-Little Falls: L 2-5
-STA: L 1-8
-Holy Family: L 3-5
-Duluth Matrshall: L 0-4
-Delano/Rockford: L 2-3

Key Games remaining:
-Albert Lea
-Breck
-Blake
-New Prague
-Totino-Grace

Notes: Not a whole lot to be said here, I think that Lourdes has pretty much been the team to beat since day 1 in Section 1A this year and I don't see that changing. Definitely the number 1 team in the section.

#2 New Prague
Section Games:
-Mankato West: T 1-1
-Rochester Lourdes: L 3-5
-Albert Lea: L 1-2
-Northfield: W 6-0
-Red Wing: L 1-2

Notables:
-AHA: L 4-7
-CLoquet/Esko/Carlton (CEC): L 1-5
-Duluth Denfeld: W 3-0
-AHA: W 4-3
-CEC: L 3-2
-Hermantown: 3-5

Key games remaining:
-Rochester Lourdes
-Northfield
-Red Wing

Notes: With the section results you may be wondering why I have them at 2 (rightfully so). I made my decision based on the fact that the Mankato West game was the first of the season and Albert Lea was only 2 weeks later. I also really like the style they have been playing lately, keeping games close with teams like CEC and Hermantown. New Prague picked up their first win against AHA this year since the 90s.

#3 Red Wing
Section Games:
-Rochester Lourdes: L 0-8
-Northfield: L 2-4
-New Prague: W 2-1
-Northfield: L 2-3

Notables:
-Fergus Falls: W 5-3
-Totino-Grace: L 1-4
-AHA: T 2-2

Key Games remaining:
-Crookston
-Thief River Falls
-Hermantown
-New Prague

Notes: Red Wing, with only one big section win, may be another team you're questioning my placement of. I chose them here not only because of a win against New Prague, but also because I think they are a good solid team. In the most recent game against Northfield, they had 6 penalities which, arguably, cost them the game seeing as Northfield had two powerplay goals. They are a hard working team that will go until the buzzer, a quality which is very desirable come playoff time.

#4 Northfield
Section Games:
-Albert Lea: W 7-2
-Red Wing: W 4-2
-Rochester Lourdes: L 2-5
-New Prague: L 0-6
-Red Wing: W 3-2

Notables:
-New Ulm: L 1-2
-Richfield: 7-5
-New Ulm: 5-2
-AHA: L 3-5
-Shakopee: L 1-2 (OT)

Key games remaining:
-New Prague

Notes: With two wins over Red Wing, you're probably wondering how I have Northfield ranked behind them. Well to be honest, I don't know. These two teams have played incredibly close games both times and one of the Red Flags for me in this Northfield team is their game against New Prague in which they lost 0-6. Red Wing beat New Prague. It is really that triangle effect all over again and I am glad I'm not one of the coaches that will have to vote at the end of the season.

#5 Albert Lea
Section Games:
-Northfield: L 2-7
-Mankato West: W 4-3
-New Prague: W 2-1

Notables:
-Virginia/MIB: L 0-6
-Hibbing/Chisolm: L 1-7
-Owatonna: L 1-6

Key Games remaining:
-Mankato West (tonight, 1/31)
-Rochester Lourdes

Notes: I put Albert Lea down at 5 because of their recent performance. They are 2-6 in their last 8 games with their two wins coming against Austin and Winona, two teams who are not known to be big competitors. I look forward to their game against Mankato West tonight where they will look to get back on the winning track before playing a good Rochester team.

#6 Mankato West
Section Games:
-New Prague: T 1-1
-Albert Lea: L 3-4
-Rochester Lourdes: L 1-7
-Faribault: W 4-3 (OT)

Notables:
-Proctor: W 5-2
-Duluth Marshall: L 0-3
-Superior (WI): L 2-3 (OT)
-Owatonna: L 2-3

Key Games remaining:
-Albert Lea
-Owatonna
-Faribault

Notes: I put the Scarlets here so I could get yelled at by Scarlethockey33... Just kidding. However, I do think this is the best spot for Mankato seeing as their only section 1A game that sticks out to me is their first of the season against New Prague which was a 1-1 tie. As I said earlier, I am really looking forward to how the game plays out for them tonight against Albert Lea.

I decided not to go any further with full descriptions of teams but I do think that L-H/SP does deserve a little more credit for their season so far. They're 9-1 in their last ten, regardless of the who you're playing this is good and they're riding on the back of their goaltender, Chris Amsden. Perhaps their most impressive game in my opinion is the one against New Ulm where they lost 1-2. Their game against Hutch also stood out to me where they won 3-2.

Which is why I put L-H/SP over Faribault with the remaining six.

#7 L-H/SP
#8 Faribault
#9 La Crescent
#10 Austin
#11 Waseca
#12 Mankato East/Loyola

Great post Universe

This might be the deepest this section has ever been? Not the most skilled players, but there seems to be more teams that have a chance to win a couple playoff games.

I heard he was injured. Came back with a couple goals saturday night. that kid was wise to leave. Although he might have led the state in scoring with Section 1 and the Big 9 being down

Haha looks pretty good to me, the bottom of the section could be just as hard to rank as the top of the section, but I put Red Wing over Northfield at this point just due to head-to-head, I would actually place West exactly where you put them, so no argument there, I think though if West wins tonight at Albert Lea, it could move West up to 5 because Albert Lea has been tumbling down as of late.

Games for Tonight January 31:

New Prague at Shakopee
St. Paul Highland Park at Waseca
Rochester Lourdes at Monticello
Red Wing at Chaska
Chanhassen at Northfield
New Ulm at L-H/SP
Faribault at Austin
Mankato West at Albert Lea

score updates on any would be appreciated!

Lourdes vs. Albert Lea

Way to go Albert Lea, sending over your fans getting caught spitting on to Lourdes players exiting and entering the bench. CLASS all the way!

Not that I'm saying it was okay, or even sticking up for AL fans, but Lourdes fans don't exactly exhibit class either. Just to clarify I'm talking about the fans, not any players or coaches.

Things are getting interesting with the section. NP seems to be playing strong. West has that very good defensive group that will keep them in most any game. AL is really struggling (if they don't start playing they will end up where I have them now) and Red Wing/Northfield keep playing dr. jekyll and mr. hyde hockey. As of now with a couple weeks to go I got:

1. Lourdes
2. NP
3. West
4. Northfield
5. Redwing
6. LS/SP
7. Albert Lea
8. Faribault
9. La Crescent
10. Waseca
11. Austin

I've seen all 12...everyone seems to be pretty close on predictions

1. Lourdes... #1 lock... can't say anymore than whats been already said.

2. NP... did well in tough conference...could upset Lourdes...IMO

3, 4, 5. West, Northfield, RW... Teams are very close...could land anywhere in these 3 spots and would fit in.

6. Albert Lea... Wheels coming off a bit....could drop to 7.

7. LH/SP...Strong goaltending and D, 3 good & smart lines, not over-powering though, play good systems.

8. Faribault...coming on of late... could surprise people.

9. La Crescent... young team, playing 4 off last years PWB team on top 3 lines and top 4 D...goaltending inconsistant

10. Waseca... Couple of good playerson top line and D... Goaltending can be very good, but is inconsistant

11. Austin...started off well...but have dropped off as the season has gone on...goaltending seams to be a factor

12. East... like Aust...showed promise early, but have dropped off.

Scores from February 2 and 3

L-H/SP 7 Mankato East 0
Austin 0 Mankato West 10
Albert Lea 2 Rochester Lourdes 5
Rochester JM 3 Faribault 6
Waseca 2 Windom 4
Northfield 3 Farmington 1
Red Wing 8 Crookston 2

Good win for Faribault, L-H/SP picks up another W, Northfield impressive vs. Farmington, Red Wing looking scary good then again I don't have a good measure on Crookston, Albert Lea tumbling down the rankings as it seems and Lourdes remaining at the top.

Games for tomorrow Saturday February 4

Winona at Mankato West
Rochester Lourdes at Breck
Red Wing at Thief River Falls
Mankato East at Rochester Mayo

Some interesting games with Lourdes vs. Breck and Red Wing vs. Thief River Falls. Lourdes will be able to show where they stand in terms of the statewide rankings. Red Wing will get to drive up to the Ralph to play the Prowlers, who are not only the top team in 8A but also one of the other top teams in Class A. A great test for the Wingers to see if they can match one of Class A's best. Also a big slew of games coming up this Monday. Also to put on note New Prague had no games this week.

Did I see on the Hub what I think I saw??????? Winona over West 3-2. Come on West!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just when I thought about giving some credit to them and thougth they might position themselves well for sections they pull this one. I guess things are going to go right down to the last couple games to figure out where everyone gets seeded.

Baffling lost for Mankato West. Beat Winona earlier 8-1 in December, surprised by the result of this one. I was absent at this game, so I don't really know what happened, but I will definitely bring this one up sometime in conversation with a couple of the players. I'm sure though if West plays the same way as they did against Winona they will definitely lose tonights game vs. L-H/SP as I think St. Peter is a better team than Winona. Exams this week, for me personally so I will not be as active, score updates on games would be appreciated!

LS/SP 4- West 1. Talked to a friend who went to the game. West was without Bingham. They outshot LS/SP pretty bad but quality shots were not that lopsided. LS/SP goalie played really well, they took advantage of their opportunities, and after they got up 3-0 they played great defensively with one forward back at all times.
The interesting thing is the game should have been 6-1 from what I was told. One goal that was not called was captured on the camera for the guy who is the sports writer for St. Peter, the second non-goal went through the net. The refs could not find a whole but the student video that taped captured the puck going in and through the net. Should make for interesting seedings.

West better get the train back on track. They can beat AL 6-2 on the road, and then lose to Winona at home and St. Pet on the road. This team is so up and down it is silly.

Anyone know why Billy B wasn't playing? Pretty critical time of the year to not have your captain out there.

Bigham suffered a minor shoulder injury during the Albert Lea game, nothing reported to be serious, but I haven't been updated on anything since the Austin game last Thursday, surprised to hear he's missed these last two games

This section has had a wild ride this year. I still think a lot might happen between now and the end of the regular season. I would have said maybe 3 or 4 teams were up for grabs between the 2-5 slots a couple weeks ago but as it stands now I think maybe 3-6 are in play. NP looks pretty safe at 2. I think at this point you have to put Northfield at 3. Now here is where things get dicey. Red Wing would be my natural selection at 4 but look at their section and overall record. What will they do the last few games? West was my 3 just a week or so ago but a couple of loses really hurts them. AL is reeling right now...should get a couple wins to close but poor closing stretch will hurt. LS/SP has had a nice season but logic doesn't allow me to take them too high or does it.....unless I take some subjectivity out of this. Strength of schedule is a component of seedings....but how does a team perform against that schedule. Also, in the case of LS/SP they can't help the schedule they have, all they could do is just go out and play. Section games are a factor as is overall record. You REALLY have to look at head-to-head as maybe the purest form of evaluation. So, with a couple weeks left here is where I have them.....remember, this too shall change. Count on it!

1. Lourdes
2. NP
3. Northfield
4. LS/SP
5. Red Wing
6. West
7. Albert Lea
8. Faribault
9. La Crescent
10. Waseca
11. Austin
12. East

I think a lot will be shaken up in the next couple weeks with Lourdes and New Prague, also with Red Wing and New Prague playing in the final game of both teams seasons. Seeding will come down to the very last game. With a win over Lourdes it's safe to say NP will lock up the top seed. (Unless, somehow, they lose to Red Wing or Northfield next week)

Everything lies in NP's hand at the moment with Lourdes, Northfield, and Red Wing remaining to play.

Seeding will be difficult for 2-5. An interesting scenario would be New Prague beats Lourdes and Northfield, and loses to Red Wing in it's final game...that could shake things up a bit...

Seeding as of today for myself:
1. Lourdes
2. New Prague
3. Northfield
4. LS/SP
5. Red Wing
6. West
7. AL
8. Faribault
9. La Crescent
10. Waseca
11. Austin
12. East

So you are saying that if New Prague wins out you would put them at No. 1 in the Section? I disagree with that, even if they win out, I still feel that Lourdes has earned the #1 seed in this section, their only section loss would be to New Prague in the case that NP wins out. New Prague still has losses to Lourdes, Red Wing, and Albert Lea, not to mention a tie with Mankato West. I think Lourdes has the #1 seed locked up.
