High School Varsity coaches - day jobs

Post by wingnuts »

Do most top high school varsity coaches have days jobs? Or are they being hired now strictly to coach hockey? Back in the day all of the varsity coaches taught school during the day.

I believe that most coaches still do teach school.

Generally, in MN, coaches also teach in the district somewhere. Sometimes it is a middle/elementary school but they generally teach. However there is no rule about it (that I know of) as I know of professionals who have coached teams.

I know Urick at Minnetonka does not work within the district at all. Side question, how much does a typical head coach make from just coaching? If they work in the district is that simply included in their contract?

The normal range is between $4,000-$7,000, and extra-curricular activities are a separate contract. There are exceptions in both cases. 8)

Steve "Moose" Younghans (St. Paul Johnson Governors head coach) owns Strauss Skates on Cope Avenue in Maplewood. That's why all the varsity players get all free stuff.

Handful that I can think of that aren't in the school system, other than to coach:

Edina, Minnetonka, Wayzata, Stillwater, Moorhead, Buffalo, Bemidji, Brainerd, Johnson, SPA, Holy Angels, Providence, St. Louis Park, Coon Rapids. So not a trend, but not a small percentage either.
