St. Paul Johnson
Last season Johnson was in Class A and know they are again in Class AA - Anybody know the reason for this?

MN Hockey Hub lists them as 4A.
EDIT: Appears you are right. They drew WBL in the first round:

TOUGH break, but it would have been tough regardless coming out of that bracket. I will be at the game regardless.

They're only 14-10-1 and Johnson is 13-11-1, although we all know WBL plays a tougher schedule, JHS did beat NSP and SSP and almost beat Mahtomedi and played some other really strong games.PuckU126 wrote:The Hub gets A LOT of things wrong.Govie wrote:MN Hockey Hub lists them as 4A.
But you're right, tough break for the Govies in the first round.
Best of luck to them in sections and in the future.
My biggest concern is their 8th grade goalie. No way they can compete with an 8th grade goalie.
They will need them to just flat out play bad, unless Dickman can put up a 4 spot or something and, like you said, they play flawless D. The goalie (poor little guy) will need to be spot on all night or his young nerves will get the best of him and it will get ugly.PuckU126 wrote:That is a tall order.Govie wrote:My biggest concern is their 8th grade goalie. The Govies will need flawless defense and several lucky bounces in the offensive zone to win.

Govies were a #8 seed and beat a #1 Seed (Tartan) a few years ago. White Bear is a # 2 seed....not a problem!PuckU126 wrote:That is a tall order.Govie wrote:My biggest concern is their 8th grade goalie. No way they can compete with an 8th grade goalie.

I remember that. I'm sure you would like that, Pioneerprideguy.Pioneerprideguy wrote:Govies were a #8 seed and beat a #1 Seed (Tartan) a few years ago. About ten years ago Hill played Stillwater in the quarterfinals. I had a nephew on Stillwater and one of my sisters said couldn't I just pull for Stillwater against Hill this one time? Not a chance. After all, I was at Hill before he was born.formerlybackofnet wrote:I'm a WBL grad, married to a Guppie, I think we are sitting on opposite sides of Aldrich on Sat. All the Pioneers have ever done is steal Johnson talent. Happened with the Strobels in the early 90s otherwise that Governors team would have easily been the best in the state (and of course the nation) for a number of years. Plenty others have left the school though as well over the years.
And I am not trying to start crap (it was obviously their family's choice to go to a private) but just pointing out how many more teams/appearances/titles the school would have not for the Hill school.

Allow me re-phrase that:East Side Pioneer Guy wrote:When a family sends kids to Hill for better than a decade, there is no way anyone can intimate they "should" have gone elsewhere.
When a family chooses to send one or more of their kids to a private school, or open enroll at another public school, there is no way anyone can intimate they "should" have gone elsewhere.
I remember that game also. I was down by the locker room and Moose looked like he was about to pass out after the game. I told him he could breathe now and he let out a big smile.Govie wrote:I remember that. So it's Hill's fault for "stealing" but not Johnson's fault for "losing?"Govie wrote:All the Pioneers have ever done is steal Johnson talent. If you listen to some people, if it weren't for Hill 29 of the last 30 state championships would have been won by Stillwater, White Bear, Johnson and North Saint Paul.
Maybe the Lake Conference should send a thank you card.

I was going to say, Stillwater, Tartan, NSP and even WBL have lost players to Hill. I suppose the same could be for STA and Jefferson when they started losing their kids to AHA.GreekChurch wrote:Every school in the East metro - and then some, can say the same thing. If only....
As far as "losing" our players to Hill, the middle- to lower-class has been leaving the East Side in droves because of an increasing minority presence. 15, 20 years ago they were still holding their ground but I guarantee you in two decades it will probably be non existent.
It was just reported in the PP that Johnson High is now 80% minority, which shocked the crap out of me because I was a late 90s grad and I thought it was more like 50/50.

So to you it is the responsibility of the consumer to stick with a bad product when they can afford a better one and not the responsibility of the government to use OUR [roughly] $10,000/kid to make the product we are providing the public as good as it can be?Govie wrote:I was going to say, Stillwater, Tartan, NSP and even WBL have lost players to Hill. That was hardly my point.HShockeywatcher wrote:So to you it is the responsibility of the consumer to stick with a bad product when they can afford a better one and not the responsibility of the government to use OUR [roughly] $10,000/kid to make the product we are providing the public as good as it can be?Govie wrote:I was going to say, Stillwater, Tartan, NSP and even WBL have lost players to Hill. You can get a good "product," as you put it, in public schools. People act like there aren't advanced classes in public/inner city schools but that's a load of horse manure. It's just a more ghetto minority element which people are choosing to flee from. It's de facto segregation is what it is.
I am moving away from the East Side as well most likely when I choose to have kids (I would never raise girls especially over here). Probably to Vadnais, Little Canada or NSP. But I would still like my son(s) to wear a Govie uniform some day, if the program is still around and there is a way to send them to a different district.
This is all hypothetical though at this moment.
And I want to be clear that there are a lot of good, honest, hard working people here still with good clean properties but it is eroding. It would be nice if the ES would just start gentrifying and reversing the trend.
Hockey players from the east side went to HM (and Hill before that) well before they were allowed to compete in the MSHSL. Sure, we resented it just as much or maybe more back then but once they started open enrollment not sure there's much of an argument anymore.
