WHS BOYS' HOCKEY: Trojans move on in 3A playoffs
WORTHINGTON — The Worthington boys’ hockey team set many goals for itself at the beginning of the season.
By: Jocelyn Syrstad, Worthington Daily Globe

WORTHINGTON — The Worthington boys’ hockey team set many goals for itself at the beginning of the season.

Some were met, like playing competitive in every game. And others were not, like the number of wins the team wanted to achieve.

But the Trojans’ biggest goal of the season was put to the test Tuesday night, and much to their happiness, WHS managed to reach that goal — winning a first round playoff game.

For only the fourth time since 1998, the Trojans made it past the first round of the sectional tournament. They did it this time by defeating Redwood Valley 7-3 at the Worthington Ice Arena.

“This was one of our goals at the beginning of the season. We wanted to win this game,” WHS head coach Pat Christopherson said. “We were working for this from the very start. This was a big one for us.”

Worthington (5-16-1) opened up its scoring with 14:36 remaining in the first period on a goal by Jacob Oberloh (assist Alex Kremer).

The goal was quickly followed up by a goal from Ethan Stofferan with an assist from Jacob Molden and Kody Honius at the 8:22 mark of the first period.

The Trojans shut out the Cardinals in that period, entering the first break with a 2-0 lead.

It took until halfway through the second period for another goal to be scored. Kremer scored with 8:14 left in the middle period on an assist from Molden.

RV responded quickly, getting on the board just two minutes later on an unassisted goal from Austin Kretsch.

Stofferan closed out the period with his second goal of the game (assist Honius and Jonah Oberloh) to give the Trojans a 4-1 lead entering the final intermission.

“We knew we had to come out with fire because they wanted to avenge their last game against us, but we came out harder than I think we have all year,” Kremer said. “We just came out and got it done from the drop of the puck to the last buzzer.”

The third period opened up with a goal from Cardinal Kollin Joines (assist Lane Stadther) with 15:06 left to play.

Jacob Oberloh scored his second goal of the game at the 8:49 mark (assist Kremer) to give the Trojans a 5-2 lead.

Then, with 6:02 left to play Kremer became the third Trojan to score his second goal of the game on an assist from Jonah Oberloh.

“We got the faceoff and I knew Jonah was going to whip it around there so I started skating as fast I can up the ice,” Kremer said. “I got around the guys and the guys over-committed to me and I stopped and they couldn’t stop with me. I got a good shot between the goalie’s legs and it was dribbling right in the crease and I just slammed it home the second time, but I got it done. I was pretty excited.”

Honius scored the final goal of the game for WHS with 5:01 left to play on an assist from Stofferan. The Cardinals would score one more goal in the game, but the damage was already done.

RV was elminated and WHS was advancing to the next round of the tournament.

“One of our goals this year is that we’ve wanted to be competitive and we played 22 games this year and I would say we weren’t competitive in maybe three,” Christopherson said. “With the five wins and the tie, winning this first round playoff game I think proves we’re trending in the right way.

“[The guys] are jacked about it. That’s all we really want is passion and commitment and effort and we got all three of those tonight. It was a good job by the guys.”

Christopherson said the Trojans’ had good hustle and stamina in their first playoff game.

WHS also took advantage of power plays, scoring three power play goals.

Goalie Rylan Scholtes had 45 saves on the night, while the Trojans had 36 shots on goal.

“Rylan made some spectacular saves tonight,” Kremer said. “He was amazing.”

Worthington advances to the next round of the playoffs Thursday when the Trojans take on No. 1 seed New Ulm at 7 p.m.

The Eagles (14-11) have advanced to the state tournament in each of the previous two seasons and are considered a favorite from the section to advance again.

“We’re going to try to at least stay competitive with New Ulm,” Christopherson said. “They’re the section champion and the No. 1 seed. It’s going to be a tough game, but I know we’ll play hard. They boys are jacked to advance and it will be an exciting experience for them.”

RV 0 1 2 — 3

WHS 2 2 3 — 7

Congrats to Worthington on a great win. They are a young team this year and should only be better next year.

Redwood Valley just two years ago was the talk of this message board and now my have they fallen on tough times since their playoff upset.

One is down and we move on to Thursday Night!

The only close one will be luverne and litch. The advantage to the home team due to the length of the drive will be the deciding factor.

Luverne – LDC will be interesting - I expect a physical game out of LDC and a major issue could be if Litch is able to avoid the Major Penalties
It will be nice to learn what Luverne brings to the table.

Section 3A Playoffs Quarterfinals Preview

#1 Seed New Ulm Area Eagles (14-11-0)
The Eagles are the favorite to again advance out of Section 3A and expects to do just that.

A handful of Eagles have known nothing but ending their season in St. Paul each winter, including leading scorer Brody Peterson (37-24-61), who finished eighth in the state in goals. Peterson has been a part of each of the Eagles' state tournament teams and would like nothing better than to reverse the team's first-round fortunes. He has plenty of offensive help from Jeff Banal (12-34-46), Dylan Schreckenberg (17-29-46) and Judd Davis (13-19-32) on a team that scores 4.8 goals per game.

Banal is actually a defenseman with the ability to join the rush at any given moment. Along with Timmy Kehren (4-10-14) and Connor Stark (2-12-14), the trio forms the backbone of New Ulm in its own zone. While they've been able to rely on longtime goaltender Blake Burgau in the Eagles' past two state tournament berths, the three-year starter graduated in the spring. The goalie that has replaced Burgau, is sophomore Brach Kraus (8-3-0, 2.08, .900).

The Eagles have a very strong first line they have 6 senior defensemen with experience. They look to be fully healthy for the first time since the start of the year. New Ulm is the clear favorite to repeat.

#8 Seed Worthington Trojans (5-16-1)
They will go as far as Ethan Stofferan (14-8-22) and Alex Kremer (15-3-18 ) can carry them up front. Worthington only has around 12 skaters they hustle and grind with the best of them. They lack scoring depth well they lack depth in general.

The Trojans will go as far as Rylan Scholtes will take them in the nets. The athletic junior is use to facing a lot of shots and can steal a game.

Prediction: New Ulm 10 Worthington 0. This one will be running time.

#4 Hutchinson Tigers (9-16-0)
The Tigers have I think the 2nd best talent depth in the Section but plays a tough schedule and their record suffered. Still not sure how this team got stuck with a 4 seed. The Tigers are dangerous they Trace Adams (12) (12g, 14a, 26pts), Cody Nielsen (11) (8g, 18a, 26pts), Matt Cowger (9) (10g, 10a, 20pts) up front. They have the top D-man in the Section in Max Cowger (12) (11g, 9a, 20pts) on the blue line. The talent to make a run in this Section is there.

The weak spot of late for the Tigers has been goaltending in the ability to bury puck in tight games. It will be interesting to see as we move forward in the playoffs if Hutch can get some timely goal scoring this is the one team I think has a chance to knock off New Ulm.

No. 5 Windom Area Eagles (11-7-1)
The Eagles coach Jon Ammerman has done a wonderful job turning around Windom this year and making them competitive. The Eagles have plenty of scoring punch they are led up front by a Trio of forwards Mitchell Baumhoefner (14-8-22), Travis Janssen (23-17-40) and Adam Eisenmenger (20-15-35). These three forwards carry the Windom attack.

Ben Stubbe (11) (8-6-1, 4.18 GAA, .874) in the nets has caught fire down the stretch and has allowed Windom to be a thorn in the side of many teams. However, the weak point of Windom is their defense. They lack talent in depth on the blue line in the playoffs that leads to an early exit.

Prediction: Hutchinson 7 Windom 3. Eagles will keep it interesting for a little bit but the Tigers depth and talent take over as the game wears on.

#2 Seed Marshall Tigers (15-7-1)
Marshall has balanced scoring, with no player with more than 13 goals or 26 points. But five have scored at least 11 goals and seven have double-digit point totals. Beau Mikel (11-15-26) paces the team in points, while Quinn Horvath (13-10-23) leads in goals.

The strength of the Tigers team lies in their Trio of Senior defensemen Campion, Buysse & Walker. These three log big minutes and are a very big presence in the D-zone they have allowed Sophomore Mason Campion (12-6-1, 2.99, .892) to develop in the net. It is because of the Tigers strong defensive unit that I think the Tigers are primed to make a run to the Section Final.

#7 Seed Fairmont Cardinals (5-17-0)
The Cardinals are led by their trio of Senior forwards Ross Wilken (12) (19g, 8a, 27pts), Brady Junkermeier (12) (6g, 14a, 20pts), Jacob Lemon (12) (8g, 6a, 14pts). After that their depth really drops off.

Fairmont is a team that has really fallen off of late losing 10 in a row heading into playoffs. They are not playing Holy Family or Delano’s of the world either. Fairmont will have to play their best game of the season just to make this one close.

Prediction: Marshall 8 Fairmont 2 This one won’t be close the Tigers get the easiest game of the top 4 seeds in the Quarterfinals.

#3 Seed Luverne Cardinals (19-3-2)
The Cardinals have a powerful offense that averaged 5.8 goals per game and propelled the team to a closing 16-game unbeaten streak (14-0-2). Luverne has balanced scoring paced by Skyler Wenninger (23-28-51), Austin Maxwell (16-30-46), Cody Christensen (16-25-41), Gunnar Olson (19-18-37), Jonny Solma (14-21-35) and Logan Norman (13-16-29). Beyond those half-dozen, another seven Cardinals have at least 10 points.

The Cardinals have a strong Sophomore goalie in Kendall Meyer (11-2-2, 2.01, .917) he will need to be hot in order for Luverne to make a run. Luverne’s schedule does them no favors and this team doesn’t play much in their D-zone. In the playoffs lack of success in this area of the ice could leave the Cardinals prone for the upset.

#6 seed Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato (5-20-0)
The Dragons started the year with five wins in its first six games, but dropped the final 19 games on its schedule entering the playoffs. Scoring has been an issue, as the Dragons average just 2.6 goals per game. They play a very strong schedule and have improved as the year has gone along.

LDC still have some weapons up front they are led by John Raisanen (12) (13g, 14a, 27pts), Mike Spreiter (11) (9g, 10a, 19pts), Max Hyberger (12) (11g, 7a, 18pts). They also have a very physical squad that knows playoff success. The Dragons have been in the last two Section 3A Championship games. Their success will hinge upon the performance of their sophomore goaltender Braeden Wahl (5-20-0, 5.54 GAA, .860). If they get solid play from Wahl LDC is a team no one really wants to play.

Prediction: LDC 5 Luverne 3. LDC’s size and strength and playoff experience will be too much for Luverne in the end. This will be the one upset of the Quarterfinals.

Just one guy’s opinion. Put some time in effort into this I am sure I will get called pathetic and that I have no creditability. Both comments are valid in all honesty there will only be one close game tomorrow night (LDC vs. Luverne) it could go either way I just think experience and strength will help the Dragons pull it out.

Good Luck to everyone as we will be down to just 4 TEAMS Very Soon!

Nice read Section 3A, I can very likely see all your predictions happening.
And wait for tonight! :D
This looks an aweful lot like the article on hockeyhub last week.

Wow, this is rich! Although not quite Word for Word from the Hockey Hub article, it's obvious where 3A scout got it from.

This may be more embarassing than the guarantee that Windom would beat Luverne, and the Luverne took it to em..... yeah this has to be worse.

Ldc was absolutely no match tonight for luverne. Absolutely got destroyed by the cardinals. There was not one phase of the game that Ldc could say they outperformed Luverne at tonight.. This will be a miserable ride home for the fanbase of litchfield. To give them credit, the did not get chippy or cheap in run- time. Class act.

If this doesn't send a message to the posters who are so anti-luverne, nothing ever will. Watch out section 3A luverne is.Coming. No matter how bad you don't want them to....

Luverne played a great game tonight. They were by far a better team than Litch. I was very impressed with Luverne's third line. The were a difference maker tonight. I believe that line had 3 or 4 goals.

Hutch with what appears to be a dominating performance with shots on net being 56-22 in favor of the tigers. But goaltending continues to be a problem for them. This will be the difference vs new ulm.

Cant wait to see Everyone in St. Peter

Oh, Section 3A hockey scout, do you like your crow served grilled or fried?

Congrats luverne... 1st ..... semi-respectable win in team history..... before you get carried away... I would be curious to know if this game was dominated as the score indicates... shots were only 31-26 or something.... which doesnt usually correlated to a 8-1 score. usually indicates similar amounts of offensive zone time.... anyone have any comments on this.. Litch tending really that bad? I had a hunch luverne would win as Litch has really been stuggling but didnt see this lopsided.

also, I really dont appreciate the luverne folk bashin 3A hockey scout.... outside of victory guarantees.... he actually knows more about hockey than any one of you ignorant fools who post on here.

Ok bettman, was in attendance at the game. Time of possession was not close in first period. Luverne absolutely suffocated litch.... Period two was the best period for litch. They had 2 powerplays, had several shots due to that. Period three was lights out luverne. Five goals In the third for the cardinals.
It was clear litch knew how to lose. Luverne knew how to win...
The game was absolutely dominated by luverne. Nobody would argue with that who was in attendance.

Bettman is slanted against luverne. That Is fine. The best team will win....

Luverne smashed Ldc. No question about it....

8-1 Luverne. All you naysayers please keep it up. The Cardinals are a good young hockey team.

There youth teams have either beaten or played very close games with NU, Hutch, and LCD AKA "Big Three" but yet they have refused to play them at the High School level for the following reasons:

1. Didn't have a JV. They do now

2. Too far to drive. Not a problem they will play at the "Big Three" Arenas
(Hutch is going to Eleveth next year. Too far to drive? REALLY!

3. They would not be competive games.

4. Hutch said they are only allowed to play so many games a year but
after Marshall beat them this year they were able to add another game
against Marshall. Interesting to say the least.

LCD has put them on their schuedle for next year. It time NU and Hutch step up instead running away.

So New Ulm beat a 2-whatever team 11-1, and Marshall beat a 3-whatever team 8-0, and Luverne beat a 4-whatever team 8-1.
So what.
Yap and brag, moan and groan all you want, the section competition starts Saturday. No one has done anything more than what they should have (Although Hutch made it interesting).

Hutch needs to protect their net.
Luverne needs to prove they belong.
Marshall needs to stay on task.
New Ulm needs to defend the top of the hill.

Hope the games are competitive and may the best teams win!

See you in St. Peter !
