Goalie Delay Game Intentional

Post by Hoc2x21 »

How often do we see goalies knocking the goal off intentionally during heavy pressure situations and do the officials typically call delay of game, penalty shot or call nothing?
The reason I am asking is in the Sartell vs Little Falls game Sat. eve Sartell was putting heavy pressure on the L F netminder early on. I watched the L F goalie knock the net off intentionally and then just stand there as play went on. Sartell scored within a few seconds of this happening to which the official waved off the goal. No penalty was called. It would have put Sartell up 1-0 but instead shortly thereafter L F scores and goes up 1-0.
It most likely had no bearing on the game but did deflate Sartell shortly thereafter. I have watched L F goalie many times and this Intentional action happens 2-3 times a game.
Do most smart goalies use this little trick and get by with it?

I wouldn't call it an epidemic, but I've seen this happen too, and not always by goalies. Unfortunately, the refs rarely see it, or at least rarely call it a penalty, and players know they can usually get away with it. If it's clearly intentional, it should be a delay of game penalty.

Some (well most) goalies are told to do that in pressure situations to just stop the play. I've been guilty of doing it myself a few times and was shocked that I received no penalty for it, because sometimes it was completely blatant. At other times, it was just a fast play and instinct is to play to the post and if you're kicking your leg out for a save, you may hit the metal. I believe refs typically don't call it because they don't want to have to be in the argument of whether it was a play to the post or an intentional action. I've seen the L-F goalie do this before as well though... Numerous times. I have never seen a goalie do it and just stand there before; if they're trying to make it any more obvious then I don't know how you can do it... I think there should be more of an emphasis on trying to tone it down because it can cause games to turn. I remember being in section finals one year and the opposing goalie kept kicking the net off to the point where the radio broadcasters were saying "Huh, it looks like [goalie from the opposing team] is having some trouble with his net. That's funny, it doesn't seem like [Roy01] is having any issues with his. Hmmm...," because it was that blatant. We were down and trying to come back for about the final ten minutes it was just repetitive. And we ended up losing, ultimately because our inability to convert, but any time we crossed the blue line, or put the puck in the net a couple of times, the net "mysteriously" ended up off it's moorings.
Anyhow, I feel it is something that should be addressed because some teams (especially in playoffs) have fallen victim to this.

Some of this depends on what you call "intentional." Most goalie coaches I know teach that if you have to make a fast pad slide to the weak side, you aim for the post. . . not necessarily to knock it off, but to seal the post and not overplay the slide. More than half the time, because of the post anchors we use (and should, given the huge increase in safety), the net comes off the moorings. A stoppage is a definite benefit, but should you tell the goalie to not seal the post???

Now, I understand we've all seen the shoulder shrug where the net goes flying. . . but we've also all seen the drama king throw his arms in the air and his feet in front of him as soon as he feels a stick touch his midsection. I watched about 40 HS games this year and didn't see either a delay on the goalie or an unsportsmanlike for the embellishment.

Simply put, it's become part of the game. Use it when you can.

Goalies knock the net off its moorings sometimes and so do players, but I wouldn't say its a huge problem in the game.

Setting that aside, did it really matter LF's goalie did it? Didn't LF end up winning that game 8-1?

Considering the score, it appears what LF's goalie was doing didn't really matter, regardless if he did it 3 to 4 times.

I did state above that it was unlikely to have had a bearing on the game against Sartell however it was so obvious that it was intentional as the weak side is what came off with a shoulder shrug.
This type of action without question will effect the outcome of any close game especially if it is never penalized.
I just thought this topic would create some fun dialog. #-o

Gotcha.

I guess I wouldn't call it "fun" dialog; however, its a good topic of conversation. :)

Majerle from Park did it several times against Eagan, it looked like a couple different times the referee was talking to him about it and the coach another time but a penalty was never called. Cheaters.

If this is the same Fliers goalie who held the best team in the state "Hermatown" to 2 goals recently, I don't think it would have mattered. I don't recall any Hawkes fans complaining about this, more like compliments on how well he played.

I wasn't there and you were so I will take what your saying as the truth, but I'm guessing that if he didn't think the play was dead, he would have stopped your "momentum changing play". About 91% chance anyways :D
You wouldn't happen to be a Fergus Falls Fan would you????? :P :P :P

It's one of those hockey things that happens. I believe the LF goalie does it intentionally. I saw it happen. I saw it take a goal away from the other team. It was early this season. Funny thing is, there was some infraction committed to him shortly thereafter and it wasn't called. He complained heavily to the ref. Ref had a conversation to him and I don't think I have to guess what it was about.
It is too bad that a kid with such talents needs to do that, but it is what it is. It may change the momentum in the game, but hockey, like life...sometimes isn't fair. A good team will deal with it and move on.

I don't believe he is the only one.

Now that you mention this I have to chuckle. Watching Benilde this year the biggest DRAMA queen out on the ice is Labosky. Whenever he is on open ice and even gets touched he does a lil Cinderella dance falls down, gets up with his arms flailing in the air =D>

i know i've been instructed that in certain times say on a 2 on 1, we were told to go down to block the pass and always go down into the near post to keep the puck from bouncing off the player and in and also knock the net off to get a whistle and a chance to regroup.

For the record, despite very good pressure by Fergus Falls, the Little Falls net didn't come off once. So much for your theory that the LF goalie does this 2-3 times a game.

That theory stuck in your craw eh! :)
He had no reason to with that 2-0 start. The Flyers were already in cruise control.
My hat is off to the Young men in the purple and white. They are a very nice up tempo puck controlling team. I was impressed by the great sportsmanship they displayed during the handshake at the end of the game.
Best of luck to the Flyers! Make Sec 6A proud and bring home the 1st place hardware!

Actually the theory was such a transparent attempt to plant ideas and stir the pot that someone had to point out it out. Fergus keep playing hard. They had some very good players and the team played well. I don't think the Flyers or their fans felt like the were in cruise control until the FF drew a 5 minute major with about 8 minutes left in third period. FF and LF have matched up many times in the Section Championship and I think the LF kids knew that and hopefully the handshake and sportsmanship was a reflection of their respect for the FF program and the palyers. These kids realize that with two rinks in FF now the FF program will continue to be a factor in Section 6A.

Had two rinks in FF since the 1980's.
I hope that LF's good sportsmanship is still there, really, the best sports that I ever played against back then.

This "transparent" attempt to stir the pot though, is not what you call it. Maybe the poster was trying to create conversation, but it wasn't without merrit. This goalie is very skilled, and LF is a very good team once again... but he still has the habit.

Good point I should have pointed out two new rinks and very nice facilities. Whether the LF goalie does this ia a matter of opinion. Didn't hear it was a problem against Hermantown, Rogers, Lourdes, Hibbing, Virginia and other hockey towns.
