Morinville's two-headed goalie theory?
Over the past 3 or 4 years we've seen the spuds come out with two goalies who more or less evenly share starts.

When it came to Deutz and Hittle this worked alright since both performedy equally well. Yet some think that perhaps Moorhead could have been better if they stuck with one goalie, just to give him that extra confidence that he's the go-to guy.

I understand that with two young goalies this year DM has to give them both a chance to show what they can do. And clearly Kunde has produced better results than Duncan, so at what point should coach make the call to play only Kunde?

What do you guys think about a two goalie rotation? What other schools does this take place at? How is it working out for them?

Thanks for your input.

What it is... Its Knight Time Baby!!!

Re: grow up
I think it is a good idea to give two goalies in the same grade a chance to prove themselves. Especially when both are unproven at this level.

That being said, I think there is a clear winner.

Re: grow up
I think he should play the best goalie no matter what......the back up should play against the weaker opponets.

__________________________
www.fmhockeytalk.com

He should play both unless one proves he is cleary better than the other.

The Two headed monster
When I look at it I see two goalies who are new to High School Hockey, not just Varsity but I dont believe either of these players received much play time last year in JV where Beau Christian ruled. Now that Christian is gone to play Midgets. And not start for the state runner up team and a contender to return to state, one would have to ask why? The Christians and Mornvilles dont see eye to eye. Its rummored that this will be Jordy Christians last season in Moorhead. As for the starting goalie situation, lets face it Moorhead has never had a goalie who stood on his head.......yeah there have been a few who have benifitted from Moorheads speed, forechecking and prior to this year team defense. But you can go down the list of former Moorhead players who have played past High School and not one has been offered a D1 ride. Why....the team has been so good that they never really had to rely on a goalie to carry the team, until crunch time the state tourney. And that is why they have been good enough to get there and dominate many teams but not all three teams. Moorhead as a habit of not giving up many shots, perhaps this is why the goalies tend to give up so many goals, they just dont stay in the game....I dont know. But what I do know is that Moorhead will have to Improve just to make it out of sections. I will consider winning 2 out of three, in any order at the Excel Christmas tourney a victory.

Slappy, RH is exactly right swiss between the pipes NO title. Best example I've ever seen....1977 & 1978 Roseau Rams probably should have won back to backs but the goaltender puked out both years. Remember those goals from beyond the blueline and the center ice redline. I bet Grindahl still wakes up in a cold sweat after a nightmare about the Edina game.

Moorhead Goalies
In 2004 Moorhead only gave up one goal in the title game. It has been many different things that have led to six second place finishes. Last year was due to poor goal tending in part, but also defensive mistakes, and a poor call.

Re: Moorhead Goalies
I would have to say that placing one goalie as the main starter is better than playing musical goaltenders all year and throughout playoffs. The one goalie will have more confidence and self-assurance and we all know how important that can be to goaltenders.

Morinville
I would never second guess Dave Morinville, but I am not in favor of a 2 goalie rotation... I think mentally each is always looking over their shoulder and pressing to hard... but again Morinville is a great coach and I trust his judgement... the man can coach... Moorhead will win their title soon, the program is to good...

Morinville's two-headed goalie theory?
I think it is OK to develope two tenders if they are both capable as an insurance policy. However as the season moves on it is my opinion that a coach needs to select a #1 tender based on preformance at practice and in game situations. If #1 struggles then #2 would get his opportunity to prove himself. Sometimes life as a goalie is just not fair, but it is the most important position on the team.

lesser of two evils
Neither one of these goalies will instill confidence in the spuds. It is two early to pick a starter, but when they do it won't affect much as far as the team's outlook. Both are shaky and if they don't keep shots outside and clean up in front it's a goal against.

Slappy,

Those might have been the best two teams NOT to win a state championship, goaltending aside. At what point do you proud spudheads begin to look at Morinville as "unable" to win the big one?

As long as your using a rotation, I don't think using two goalies is bad as long as the team has confidence in both. Without a set rotation, it will mess with their heads/confidence.

Moorhead does have a great hockey program/coaching with state appearences 10 out of the past 12 years I think. There has to be some concern that they have not won the big show yet. What is their state history the past 12 years?

Rotate.
I say switch every game and keep switching so no confidence is hurt but if one goalie really steps up at the end of the year then play him. However, if that does happen you don't want to try and go back to the goalie who has been sitting because he will be a nervous wreck.
