I completely agree, minus the whole Burnsville over Wayzata thing. I believe Wayzata goes with the 3 game sweep in this tournament. I dont think Farmington has enough in the tank to pull off an upset of the trojans. Should be a great game though. As Wayzata then plays Woodbury, Wayzata has more depth and stronger goaltending then Burnsville. Also, with the return of MZ and BD, Trojans should win this game. Lastly, in the finals, the trojans "should" match up with OMG. Sometimes, beating a team three times in a row is a fluke, but 6 times now. Trojans "own" the crimson and walk away with the #1 seed to state.

If this truly does happen, mark me down for this, i believe that if the trojans dont run in to the hornets in the state tournament. they win it all.

Yes, in the article he compared burnsville to wayzata, as if they are very "similar".

East Region Day 1 Recap

Post by scorekeeper »

OMG 4
Rosemount 3

WBL 5
Hopkins 0

Wayzata 3
Farmington 1

Roseville 3 (OT)
Woodbury 2

Day 1 Recap …

What a fantastic day at the rink. First and foremost, I just want to say what a treat it was to watch some of the best Bantam players, teams and coaches in the State (and country) battling for all the marbles and leaving everything on the ice in the most difficult Region of them all.

Absolutely incredible hockey for this age group with some truly astonishing personal performances.

I have always been a HUGE fan of Rosemount’s Lucas Gillette, but he played today like a man possessed in one of the best performances I have seen by any Bantam aged player anywhere. He absolutely dictated the majority of the game whenever he was on the ice, with or without the puck and he was just an absolute treat to behold. What an impressive yooung player! Really fun to watch.

Every bit Gillette’s equal is WBL’s Tommy Giller. This kid is the complete article. I love those pro-style end-to-end rushes he does from behind his net, almost always with a finishing move at the other end, taking a lane to the net when available, or equally comfortable getting it down low and feeding the slot. Powerful skater with soft hands and can finish or be a playmaker with equal competence. This kid is a franchise player. What a force!

How about Roseville’s Joey Anderson. I must admit this is the first time I’ve seen him play and I was blown away! He’s just a natural leader, leading by example with his tenacity, scrappiness, a compete factor through the roof and skills to match! I will definitely be making room on my calednar to see this kid play in the years to come. I hear this kid is a ’98 … is this true? All I can say is … WOW!

Andrew Theide from Woodbury put on a clinic today. Unbelievable how this kid stood on his head under a constant Roseville assault, almost single handedly keeping the Predators in the game. What a glove this kid has! Tough way to lose on an OT deflection, but I thought Theide was remarkable – the clear MVP between the pipes on this day. That’s no small statement either, because there was a lot of stellar goaltending.

Jalen Long from Rosemount was extremely unorthodox, yet very effective. By far the most aggressive goaltender I’ve seen this season and with the athletic ability to back it up.

Cal McKenney was his usual brilliant self for OMG. Dido for Vaugh Ayrens. Not sure what the name of the Roseville goalie was, but he was steallar as well.

The play of the Tournament though, goes to OMG’s David Brumm. While killing a penalty in the closing moments ofthe 3rd period in a 3-3 game, Brumm put on the forecheck and forced a turnover in the Rosemount Zone. Hhe chipped the puck clear and went in alone on Jalen Long. Long came out to challenge, and Brumm, showing the poise of a polished pro, waited for Long to make his move, then patiently walked around him and swept the puck in the open net – with 3 seconds remaining on the clock! What a way to start the Tournament! Unreal!

OMG had it’s hands full with Gillette, but used Brumm’s buzzer beater to advance to semi-finals.

In the second game, White Bear Lake played the best 2 periods of hockey I have seen any Bantam team play this year. I’m not sure what the official shot count was, but I counted just 1 shot for Hopkins through 2 periods. I’ve seen the Royals play some decent hockey this season, but they came out flat today and WBL is not a good team to be up against with your B-Game. The Bears are INCREDIBLY well coached, tough, disciplined and have amazing energy. All that PLUS Tommy Giller.

The OMG – WBL Game should be well worth the price of admission.

Wayzata was Wayzata. Nothing less than the deepest talent pool in the State. Max Zimmer was back on the ice and looked great – even scoring a crucial go-ahead goal. Matthew Freytag got his obligatory goal as well, and the rest of the usual suspects were buzzing. Give Farmington full marks though – the Tigers came to play and they battled hard, contested every Trojan move and definitely gave Wayzata fans cause for concern. In fact, midway through the 3rd period in a 2-1 game, the Tigers were on a 5 minute Power Play. However, when the going gets tough, the tough get going and the Trojans rose to the occasion and were masterful in limiting the Tigers man advantage. Not long after it expired Alex Stevens ripped one home from the point and sealed the deal.

Definitely the best was left for last, as the Roseville/Woodbury game was a spectacular competition, with neither team willing to give an inch. It was a tough, gritty, physical and feisty end-to-end highlight reel played at Mach speed. It was my first time watching Roseville and I was duly impressed. This is a GREAT team and they can beat any team in this bracket if they play like they played today. It was also my first time watching Joey Anderson and I became an instant fan. This kid is a hockey players hockey player. He’s guts on ice. Smart. Tough. Fast. Skilled. Inspiration on skates. Unbelievable. In a fitting end to the day, the game went to OT tied 2-2. Unfortunate for the Woodbury goalie to have the game decided on a deflection of Anderson's point shot (I think it was Matt Irwin who got the tip). The goaltending on both ends was brilliant throughout. I know great goalies have short memories and this kid is a GREAT goalie. Fun to watch.

Roseville faces Wayzata in the semi-final on Saturday. Woodbury will meet Farmington on the other side in an elimination match.

Congratulations to all the boys! You really left it all on the ice today! Very VERY well done! What a great day of hockey. I can’t wait for tommorrow!

Looks like your hope for the Trojans to lose twice to Woodbury is a fart in the wind.

I'll take Trojans 4-2 over WBL in the final and WBL #2 seed backdoor. Let's see if that one lingers a bit longer
Did somebody say they needed a Towel ??

not a hope ... a curiosity. Woodbury is 5-0 combined against Bursnville and Edina. They haven't played Wayzata. I find the matchup intreaguing.

We might get to see it yet. Stay tuned ...
