Strong Field

Post by WildTwin »

This year's boys hockey tournament fields quite possibly the strongest in the history of the tournament. 15 of the 16 teams were seeded #1 in their section. Ironically, the only #1 seed not to win their section and advance to state - the state's top ranked team, Minnetonka.

I think the consensus around the state is that East is the best team in the state. But, it is ironic that the only #1 seed that didn't make it to St. Paul is the only team that beat East in the regular season.

Did you come on here to opine the fact the fact that your Skippers got bounced? East is ranked #1 in the state and we all know that. Yawn.

Okay people, calm down. I'm from Florida and can only follow hockey through websites. It would be hard to argue the fact that the Greyhounds are #1 except that not only did they lose to Minnetonka, but lost HANDILY. Of course, that could be a fluke. Actually I'm from Grand Rapids and my team got beat out quite early so this is not sour grapes. The purpose of my post was not to dispute East as #1 in the state (they should prove that this Saturday), but the strong field at the tournament this year.

East also beat Tonka pretty handily in the championship game of the Schwans Cup 6-2 in December, a game that was 5-0 after 2 periods. Would have loved to see a Tonka/East rubber match in the state title game, but alas things don't always work out they way you want.

Didn't know that East beat Tonka. As I said, following from here in Florida, you miss quite a bit. With that in mind you gotta scratch your head as to why the kept Tonka at #1, with 3 losses to East's 1 and each of them splitting their two meetings. Guess it's only fitting then that East is in state and Tonka is not.

Yeah, I didn't mean to attack you or anything, just laying out all the facts. But yes, it's too bad Tonka got knocked out, but Benilde will do a good job representing Section 6AA regardless.

That's OK Easton. I appreciate any facts you can bring my way. But as I said, the purpose of my post kinda took a back road. The fact that 15 #1 seeds out of a possible 16 made the tournament. That's gotta be a record.

Agree, the almost complete lack of #1s being upset in sections has made for one heck of a state tournament!

I have to say this may be the strongest the state tourney has been in quite awhile and maybe ever, so many of the teams that were supposed to be there are. I cant wait!

Good to hear that rube nation will get a challenging field. Nothing like a totally manipulated "random draw" to get this thing rolling. Hey, we will take it but please stop with the random draw crap already!!

Let's just hope the games are not sleepers like the lame section finals.

Can't wait for the games. I think all 8 teams could win on Thursday...

Tonka had the toughest section to get through IMO.

I like East to win the whole thing...

Toughest Sections
1 6AA 19.04
2 7AA 18.92

Pagestat would validate your comment.
Most likely why both sections had upsets.

Best field I have seen since for sure mid to late 90s. I think 3 or 4 teams have a legitimate shot at winning AA.

Lets not forget east beat tonka handily in the schwanns cup. In the second game it was a depleted east team. A top forward injured two players suspended and a major penalty called on the forward moved up to second line. But why are we talking about tonka they got beat handily by BSM and are at home.
