Where does this quarterfinal upset rank?

While watching Lakeville South upset #1 Duluth East in the quarterfinals, the announcers made the comment "you are witnessing one of the biggest upsets in State Tournament history."

My first thought was that it was a little dramatic to act like it was THAT crazy. I have not seen Lakeville South play until the DE game and while watching I kept thinking that they are not as bad as everyone had me thinking they were. However, after last nights 10-1 (which easily could have been 18-1) pounding against BSM, it put it more into perspective how big that upset must have truly been. It looked like Men against Boys last night and Benilde was doing what hey wanted, whenever they wanted. And after DE beat Edina by the same score Benilde did the night before it shows that DE getting beat by the LS team truly may have been the biggest in history?

It's gotta be pretty high considering that Lakeville destroyed East. That game should have been 8-1 easily in favor of LS.

No question it was a huge upset but as I posted earlier, sometimes teams just don't match up well. This was a nightmare match up for South. East is very talented but they don't possess blazing speed, they are much more of grind you down, forecheck, play physical type of team. They are very skilled but are not at all like Benilde. On the other hand Benilde likes to run and gun and if you can't keep up or play physical most teams in the state will be in trouble. Did South hit anyone? I watched Burnsville beat Benilde by playing physical and getting the Knights off their game. South just let them free wheel and we saw the result. As crazy as it might seam, East was almost the best match up South could have asked for, maybe they would have given Eagan a game but had they played Maple grove it might have been much like last night. No disrespect to the hounds here, I have tremendous respect for them and think they simply are not playing their best hockey right now.

If Hill can play physical tonight they have a great shot, if they get into a shootout it could be a long night.

Rochester Century over Hill-Murray in the quarterfinals in 2007. Not sure if this was a bigger upset than South over DE, but it was a pretty big upset...

Rochester Century over Hill-Murray in the quarterfinals in 2007. Not sure if this was a bigger upset than South over DE, but it was a pretty big upset...

This was also the first win by a section 1AA team in the first round since that win in 2007.

1983 Columbia Heights over defending champ Edina 2-0(?).
Edina was stymied by a goalie and not destroyed like East was. But that one was huge.

sure there was a previous biggest upset.....but this one is much larger...28-1 number one seed vs a section one..after a couple upsets earlier should have warned them...amazing....

Goalie Reggie Miracle, gotta love that name.....That Columbia heights team was a bantam state champ if I remember right, they were a good team.

The thing that made South's win so unique was that, if you watched the game, there was nothing fluky about it - they simply played better than East, without question. They were two shots off the crossbar from blowing that game open. So often upsets in hockey can leave you with the feeling it would never happen again between those teams - an unbelievably hot goalie, or the better team gets a few bad bounces, and things like that. Not the case here.

And if you didn't see the game, but knew the teams' season records, and what happened to South the next night, you'd guess that was the case here. But somebody watching that game, who knew nothing about the teams, might not have been able to guess which one was ranked higher, so well did South play. To me that makes that game even more memorable.
