They should go old school and do private school state tourney and then all other teams (public, both small and large) school tourney like they did a long time ago.Tenoverpar wrote:how can anyone rip a kid that just put up a 5 spot in the State Championship game. If this was last year and it was RAU you idiots would have made a bronze statue of his stick...if this was the all loving Jake Randolph there would be a change from Canal Park to Randolph Park...I mean, come on people...yes, the kid is at a private school, yes his school happens to bring in some pretty good players....but honestly for some of you to say anything negative about a kid who just did what Besse did is ridiculously pathetic.
Congrats Grant on your team winning the State Championship
Problem solved.

Agreed with all that was said above. Would be nice to have him back playing HS hockey next yr. Hopefully he follows what Rau and Kloos did and realizes at the end of the day, you can never have that year back and with his talent he will do just fine at Wisconsin without the USHL.mulefarm wrote:Right on! I read in the Pioneer just a bit ago that Kloos did play 12 games in the USHL following his team after their last season and came back because he wanted to finish his prep career with his best friends and at his home school. Looks like it finished pretty damn good and he wracked up some SERIOUS numbers.

Totally agree even though he plays for the Dark Knights
! It would be a shame to see him skip his senior year to go get mugged, thumped and banged around in the USHL. He has his full ride and I'm pretty sure the Badgers will welcome him as a true Freshman regardless of where he plays next year.
Great job Mr. Besse and I hope to see you back in Red next year!

Whether Besse stays or goes, you should take some time and go to some USHL games before commenting on their style of play.hockeyrocks wrote:Totally agree even though he plays for the Dark Knights! This is where it gets hard and I don't envy kids having to make these decisions, because there's a good argument that purely from a hockey standpoint, apart from the (more important) questions about what's best for him as a kid and a person, he'd be better served leaving high school next year. The kid is a phenomenal talent, but obviously some people have questions about certain aspects of his game (he's draft-eligible and wasn't listed on the NHL central scouting midterm list), and it's probable that playing more games against better, older players would help him answer some of those questions. Quite frankly, he'd be toying with a lot of kids he'd play against in high school next year, and some of those games wouldn't really do much to help him get ready for the next level.
Again, I'm not doubting his talent - what he did last weekend I really can't quite believe - just saying that he's got a tough decision to make.

Can't he just go to a USHL team right now and come back for his senior year like Kloos did?hockeyrocks wrote:Totally agree even though he plays for the Dark Knights! I would think that gave Kloos a good idea (and warm up) for the next level(s) of hockey.
Not sure how the USHL operates. Dickman finshed with the Govs and went directly to the Fargo Force (2 assists first game, BTW) two days after they were eliminated from sections.
Then again, a DI team hasn't picked him up (yet), so that might have had something to do with it.

Great talent, but saying he is better than Kloos, and would have been Mr. Hockey is a little far-fetched. Kloos had 99 pts before coming into the tournament. Grant is a great player, had a great season, and had one of the best tournaments of any players I have seen. That being said, entire teams don't completely change their game plan to stop him like they do for Kloos. Even when teams change their game plan to stopping Kloos, they still struggle, and he still puts up crazy numbers. Also, Kloos was standout in the elite league, which personally, I think Grant is not a complete enough player to be "standout" in leagues with better players yet. With time Grant's play will improve and become more well rounded. Until then, comparing him and saying he is better than Mr. Hockey is a bit illogical.

Great post Sats! Love to see him back. It adds to the quality of MN HS hockey when these types of guys stay!Sats81 wrote:Agreed with all that was said above. Not to mention John Mayasich's 15 goals and 18 points in three games in 1951, including 7 in one game.Sats81 wrote:After Dave Spehar in 95.blueblood wrote:Wow.....that will go down as the top performance by an individual player in the history of the state tourney.

Would Besse be willing to come in with no scholarship offer? If not, Nanne is irrelevant because he won't be a scholarship player. Like mentioned in this thread, when you are bringing in the likes of Cammarata, Fasching, Guertler, and Lettieri under scholarship, there isn't room for everyone.spectatorfun wrote:Thats right. Yeah, because Kloos played on anywhere near as talented a team. Sorry, but I will have to disagree with you on Besse being better than Kloos.Sats81 wrote:I think gophers missed on him big time too and after seeing him more in the tourney I think he's better than Kloos and agree he would be Mr Hockey if he was a sr. Then you clearly haven't seen Taylor Cammarata play. The kid is currently tied for 10th in the USHL in scoring (22g-28a-50pts in 48 games) as a SIXTEEN year-old.keepyourheadup wrote:This kid is the best pure goal scorer I've seen in a very long time but it will take a lot more to succeed at the next level.

Dave Spehar - 5'8", 174 lbs
Grant Besse - 5'10", 170 lbs
And I'll disagree with you on the speed aspect too. From MNHockeyProspects.com:
Besse has made great strides in tightening up his defensive game and should continue to improve as he gets more experienced. Besse does not have overwhelming speed but is an adequate skater. The same can be said for his shot, it is not the hardest but he can pick corners and releases it for many different angles. Besse has worked hard to include a physical side into his game, something he will have to utilize at the next level.

Re: uuu
There is a difference between appreciating the effort, the performance, and the player and saying it was a mistake for the Gophers not to recruit him. It was an outstanding effort, and epic performance, and he is a great player. However, that does not necessarily mean it was a mistake not to recruit him. It's all about need.mulefarm wrote:Right on! I have seen Cammarata play this year and he is as good as advertised. I didn't include him in this comparison because this a high school forum and Taylor never played high school. For what its worth they are very different types of scores...Besse is a gunner, in the Danny Heatley mold, I'd compare Taylor's game with that of Dino Ciccerelli., always around the net, quick and extremely clever.

I see. You didn't clarify "high school player" before "best you've seen in a while", so I misunderstood. Personally, I don't think Besse is in Cammarata's league. But that is just opinion.keepyourheadup wrote:I have seen Cammarata play this year and he is as good as advertised. Like they didn't think they needed Ryan McDonagh or Jake Gardiner!
