I believe Akins was co-head coach last year and May was an assistant. From what I can tell on the MSHSL site, it looks like May is the new head coach.

What I think is great is the following in the Classic Suburban:

Mahtomedi - May (former player there)
North St. Paul - Thunstrom (former player there)
Simley - Stewart (Albrecht - former conference player from SSP)
Tartan - Ozmen (Pone - women's player on international scene)

A great group of female coaches all in the same conference! Nothing against the guys - just nice to see these ladies in the coaching capacities.

Summer is winding down, either changes have been made and aren't public, or schools haven't made any new hires yet.

Wasn't he the co-head coach so wouldn't Coach Kolehmainen just take over for the year? It seems like this has been a few years in the making.

In the dark on details, it's possible though?

Speculation. Could happen, but it's not a given.

Job is posted today on district website.

Per the EHS Athletic Director, the head coach and the athletic director fill all positions; therefore all staff for both the varsity and JV teams must be re-determined. Under the current co-head coach arrangement, Coach Kolehmainen would have to re-apply for the position. The process will be to post the job opening with the District for at least 10 days.

Update from EHS Girls Hockey website 8/23/12:
"On behalf of the EHS Girls Hockey Community, we would like to thank Scott Darwitz & Jeff Kolehmainen for their many years, countless hours and unwavering commitment to the girls hockey program. Scott and Jeff brought this team together and lead our girls to "The Tourney". An incredible experience for all! Thank you both for your leadership and dedication."

OK, we are a month into the season. What are some of the report cards on the coaching changes that were made in the off season?

I see a few more new women coaches than previous years which is a good thing in my opinion. There should be even more in the future.

While I agree that more women coaches are good for the game in theory, I think we are looking for the quick fix to a long term problem. I have seen too many good female coaches leave the game over the course of my career, because they have been pushed into a HC role before they are ready or without the proper support system. If being a HC was only about hockey it would be an easy job. We need to do more to prepare our young women for all that comes with a head position, and ensure that they can be successful over time in this position. I also believe it's important for some of these young women to take their time, learn from some quality coaches, and enjoy being an assistant for a few years. The life of an assistant coach at the HS level is really about connecting with kids and teaching hockey, enjoy it, as that is only a portion of what you will be doing when you are a HC.
