1988 Tourney
1988 Tourney
I see things haven't changed as much as one would think in 17 years. Major themes from the preview show of the 1988 tournament:

4 out of state teams...(R-JM, Warroad, Denfeld and Grand Rapids) - People happy as no team since 1980 Rapids had won title (they wouldn't this year either. Not until 1990 when there was a all north final Rapids over Roseau). Only Warroad would win their first round game (and then lose their next two to finish 4th).

Roseville played Duluth Denfeld for section 7 crown. Clearly we still had metro teams playing in northern sections.

Cretin made the tournament. SSP scored with 20 seconds left to take a one goal lead in the section final. Cretin scored with 8 seconds left to tie and won in OT. Amazing.

Larry Olimb was something special, although their goalie that year was a little too cocky. Warroad was undefeated entering the tournament.

Hill beat Osseo in the section finals. I remember Osseo havinng their best player on the news after winning the section semi's and saying "bring on Hill". Hill beat them easily 5-1 to go on to a 2nd place finish in state.

1988 was the first year in many years without a Burnsville team and really the end of the Burnsville reign (2nd in 1983, two title is '85 and '86).

Jefferson had as players: A Trebil, Saterdalen and Bianchi.

Ikola was still coaching Edina and would bring them to another title.

Warroad was rated #1 going into the tournament (finish 4th), Jefferson #2 (finish third). I remember the headline saying sea of green for the title (HM vs Edina) and that there would be 500 fans cheering for each team and the other 14,000 would boo the entire game.

Re: 1988 Tourney
My memory has failed me, Roseau did indeed win. I am not so sure I have that on tape. Too bad...
