Hurley to join U.S. national team

Edina standout to serve as temporary fill-in for U-18 squad during series of October games.

Will Hurley return or stay? Yes i see it states he will return to EHS, but if he plays real well and stands out how do you not stay.

You could add D Tyler Lodin Holy Angels playing for the Twin City Steel. Don't really understand the whole issue of why he can not play hs hockey.

Why leave senior year. Check out a number of seniors that left and their games played and points, not all that good.

I think this shows how crappy association hockey really is. Once they get out in the real world of hockey, the majority of kids have a tough time hacking it, because they have been sheltered in the "state of hockey", rather than being tested year-round with elite competition and players. Elite league or any of the other garbage they've invented to help kids stick around, does nothing to prepare kids to play after college.

The purpose of association hockey is not "to prepare kids to play after college". It's to expose as many kids as possible to the game, giving them a chance to play with other kids where they're from at a reasonable cost. Those kids who play through bantams get the experience needed to advance to the next level, which is high school for most. A small percentage go on from there to play juniors, NTDP and college.

In terms of development you should know that more kids from Minnesota advance to play D1 than any other state in the country. Once at the college level these kids have up to four more years to develop, and from there a select few who have the talent and who work hard enough will make it all the way to the NHL.

It's a long process, and your contention that it's up to the associations to prepare kids to "play after college" is just flat out wrong.

Actually I think associations do a pretty good job of developing kids. The high school years seem to be the problem and that is why many of the kids with some skill and dreams of playing at a higher level are lookong for alternatives.

You hit the nail on the head mule. Most high school coaches are teachers first, and coaches second. For those high schools that actually bring in coaches (Giles, Podein, Roberts) to coach, those kids have a chance to develop.

I remember my kid telling me that there was no comparison in the intensity of his Bantam practices compared to high school. In his youth days, the teams seem to excel at the end of the year, but in high school, they seemed to peak early and tail off at the end.

So just out of pure interest of a sophomore going to play juniors, I checked the stats on the Victoria and Portland teams. Turns out that none of these kids have played the full season and 2 of them only have played about half the games. Just curious why anyone would send their 15 year old son away to not even play all the games?

Honest answer anyone??

Looking at team stats, Walker has played 7 out of 18, Iverson 13 out of 17 and Bittner 9 out of 17. They are only 16 and need time to adjust.

I guess the honest question I was asking is why send your pre-drivers license teen across the country play hockey when he's not even going to play full time. Maybe staying home and playing puck with friends is a better development plan - physically and emotionally. (Or maybe not?)

We've had this discussion before. One should be able to assume that the families of these young men made the decision to forego high school and NCAA hockey after giving it alot of thought. If they stay healthy, the WHL guys will play in at least 40 games this season, games that will always be more competitive than any Minnesota high school varsity game. And then next season they will probably play in 60. These kids go to the WHL to get developed in a way that their families probably believe will never happen playing MN high school hockey. Of course they don't have any guarantees with regard to hockey. But they do get college tuition scholarships if they decide to go back to college after playing juniors. Iverson and Bittner are playing with guys every day who are one or two years away from the NHL; there must be some value in that. Plus, I bet you they are having fun playing hockey. Isn't that what it should primarily be about? I am not saying playing in the WHL is better than playing MN high school hockey; it is merely a different path that may work for these players and their families.

Relax about this. The hockey universe does not revolve around Minnesota high school hockey.

There is plenty of time to play junior level hockey after high school. Enjoy your high school years while they are offered to you, it is pretty short experience and over very fast.

I don't think it's "impossible" to measure. You have a team full of kids that share the same dream as you and they are all there for one reason, to get to the NHL. I played and some of my closest friends to this day are teammates from the WHL.
Players do not play for CHL teams to just keep playing the game. They are there with the purpose of getting noticed and making it to the next level. I am confident that the majority of College players are not "putting it all on the line" to make the professional ranks. Many are going to be happy playing out their College career and joining the workforce with a well earned degree. Thats awesome!!
As they say, "you are only young once". If you feel that the CHL is for you, then go for it. You can always get a degree later in life. I don't understand why people (in MN) are always so eager to dismiss any other path (HS, Jr's, D1 or D3) it seems silly to me.
Not to mention, all the Walker boy's will be leaving is a bunch of "edina people", who would miss them??
