Nick Swaney (1g, 1a) helped Lakeville South down Prior Lake 4-3.

For games played this week (Tues/Thur):

Derek Hammer continues to lead East Ridge in scoring, getting a goal in the 4-3 win over Hastings.

Likewise, Baron Thompson has helped Achievers Academy immensely, factoring into 42% of their goals, the latest being a goal in the AA 4-2 win over Le Sueur-Henderson/St. Peter/Tri-City United.

Dylan Phillips had a goal and assist, and Mike Behl an assist, as Wadena/Deer Creek downed Prairie Centre 4-1.

Cade Gleekel continues to factor heavily in Blake's few goals, participating in 44% of them to date.

Luverne dusted Fairmont 11-0 with frosh Chaz Smedsrud scoring 1 goal and assisting on 3.

Bagley/Fosston downed Ely 16-9 in one of the highest scoring games in Minn HS hockey history. Eighth-grader Christian Larson of BF picked up points (2g, 4a) in that game, along with frosh Andy Krunkkala (1a) of Ely.

Thief River Falls beat Bemidji 2-1 with frosh Ethan Johnson getting the game-winning goal off an assist from another frosh, Keaton Huot.

St. Paul Academy downed Chisago Lakes 3-2 with frosh Jared Mickelson and Justin Jallen each scoring a goal.

Derek Hammer scored one and assisted on one as East Ridge drew 5-5 with Mounds View.

Luverne is shaping up to be the team to beat in SW Minn, beating Morris/Benson 7-0, with frosh Chaz Smedsrud picking up a goal and an assist.

Austen Long continues to lead the Spring Lake Park offense, scoring two goals in the 5-3 loss to Mahtomedi.

After starting the season with 6 goals, Cade Gleekel is beginning to pick up some assists, notching 3 in Blake's 7-0 win over Minneapolis. Frosh Edmund Chute picked up 2 assists in that game also.

Cool. Maybe my job of 5 years is over! I had followed the 'FollowThePuck' website for several years, but this year Doug seems to have more time available to go deeper into the stats.

I hope you keep at it. I kind of like the way you compute the percentage of scoring. Adds a certain perspective

After a week's vacation, Teak is back! Here are the frosh scorers to-date. Biggest movers this week were Austen Long, who continues to lead Spring Lake Park in scoring (2g, 1a against Winona on Wed), and Devin Nielsen of Windom (2g, 3a last Friday, and 2g yesterday).

Another big mover was Trey Rooney of Robbinsdale Cooper. He had 3g and 3a in their 17-1 win over Ely (ouch! I am an Ely fan.

) and 3g and 1a in a 10-0 win over Moose Lake.

Yes points are points. Need to keep in perspective.

If a kid plays for Luverne or Spring Lake Park and racks up points vs Lesser opponents vs a kid playing for Wayzata or Edina and playing against higher competition day in and day out, I will take the Wayzata or Edina player.

I will take Max Zimmer from Wayzata over any player from Luvernenor Spring Lake Park in my example.

I will take the Spring Lake Park kid. Huge upside...has played very little hockey. He has dominated kids from the high profile AAA teams for the past two years while playing on a lesser AAA team. I don't get excited about freshman scoring, but the SLP kid could easily play at Shattuck or at any of the private schools.

Yeah, it does help to compare apples to apples and rambutan to rambutan. But, I am not interested in trying to determine the best freshman in the state; my thread title is clearly about scoring and which freshmen are the most important to their squads in scoring influence.

So, a frosh from a little southern town (e.g., Windom, Luverne) can be more important to their squad in scoring terms than a 4th-liner frosh for a Metro giant. If people want to start a thread about the best freshman in the state, "Go ahead" I say. I would nominate Koby Bender of Cloquet. I watched him play last weekend and he is fast and fearless; but he hasn't scored much yet so doesn't appear high in the scoring stats list.

Where are you taking them?

If you look back over the other 4 or 5 years in which I have been doing this frosh scoring summary, you will note that true talent usually does rise to the top. Past members of my list include Travis Boyd (now at U of M), Karson Kuhlman, Shane Gersich, Grant Besse, and others who are acknowledged to be some of the best in the state. Let's not put down small schools, eh? Let's give them their moment in the sun.

For you others, two additional things to remember.

Many to most of the top freshmen play bantam. And, I know just a few of these players but give the SLP player a couple of Wayzata line mates and believe me his game, and scoring, goes up even more. Talent is talent wherever they play. Frankly, sometimes they're even better all around players as they take on additional responsibility in both ends and they know how to carry the load.

For games played through Saturday, 29 Dec.

Congrats to Wayzata on their 7-1 win over the BSM Recruiters. Frosh Maxwell Zimmer had 1g and 1a in that Top 10 AA matchup.

Trey Rooney moves to the top of the frosh scoring list with 1g and 2a in Robbinsdale Cooper's 5-4 win over North Shore (Two Harbors, Silver Bay). In the 3-game North Shore tournament, Rooney racked up 13 points (7g, 6a).

Luverne defeated Winona 8-1 with Chaz Smedsrud scoring 2 goals and assisting on 2.

Over a 3-game tournament in Grand Forks, East Grand Forks' Tanner Tweten picked up 2 goals and 2 assists.

Baron Thompson of Achiever Academy scored a goal and assisted on one as they won 4-1 over Windom Area.

Come on, "has played very little hockey", that could be one of the funniest things I have heard in a while, he played on multiple teams all summer.

These 2 players are very good, and no matter where you play, they will find you.

I agree that if you are at Wayzata, your potential linemate talent will higher but your competition is tougher, but to do it against lesser talented teams with potentially less talent surrounding you is no less of a feat........do you think the kid leading the Freshman Scoring has a bunch of help on his line? These kids just get it done.

Probably just saying he started Hockey later than most. Also sounds like the info is coming from a blood relative.
