Big Games and Your Predictions - Week 9

The first two results of the night are in, and we have one huge upset and a near upset:

Buffalo 3, BSM 1

In a game I happened to attend this evening, Buffalo pulled a major upset in beating the No. 2 ranked Red Knights at the St. Louis Park Rec Center. BSM controlled most of the play thoughout, especially in the 2nd and 3rd periods, but could not capitalize on their opportunities until the last minute of play on a power play. As of right now the Game Sheet is not available, but I believe the final shots on goal were 42-22 in Benilde’s favor.

EVERYBODY had BSM winning this game, so no points are awarded.

Minnetonka 1, Hopkins 0

Minnetonka’s Rylie McDonnell scored the only goal of the game at 5:17 of the first period as the Skippers edged the Royals at Braemar Arena. The game was largely penalty free, with just one minor called on each team. Hannah Ehresmann needed to make just 9 saves for the shutout, while Erin O'Neil stopped 27 of 28 shots for Hopkins.

In our contest 18 of 20 pick up a point each, but nobody predicted that it would be such a low scoring affair.

Edit: Final Game Sheet for BSM/Buffalo is now posted - correcting shots on goal from 42-17 to 42-22 BSM.

And it appears we have our second major upset of the evening:

South St. Paul 3, Hill-Murray 2 (OT)

Taylor Cashman scored the overtime winner as the Packers toppled the Pioneers 3-2 at Aldrich Arena. Cashman also assisted on Anna Leadens’ power play tally in the second period which put the Packers up 2-0. Lauren Wilcox also had a goal and an assist for South St. Paul, while Jac Kaasa had a goal and an assist for Hill-Murray. For the game the Pioneers had a narrow 17-16 edge in shots on goal.

If the predictions of our panel are any indication, this also has to be considered a major upset. Nobody had the Packers coming out on top in this game, so once again no points are awarded.

For anyone considering getting involved in these contests, but has so far been reluctant to join in, coming out on top against this group shouldn't be too difficult! Just need to get lucky on an upset or two!

Edina was a 2 to 1 winner over EP. The Hub has it incorect right now.

Edina 2, Eden Prairie 1

Brianna Bellows scored the game winner at 0:23 to open the 2nd period, and the Edina Hornets hung on to beat the upstart Eden Prairie Eagles 2-1 at Braemar Arena. Sarah Nielsen had the other Edina goal, and also assisted on Bellows’ 2nd period winner. EP did outshoot Edina by a 30-24 margin for the game, including 17-6 in the middle period.

Perhaps due to the Eagles’ recent success, only 3 of 20 had the Hornets winning this game, and each of those three predicted a score of 3-2. So, even though nobody had a perfect score, each of these three still gains a point on the rest of the field…

I hope to post an interim leaderboard yet tonight, if the East Grand Forks/Warroad score comes in…otherwise, look for an update tomorrow AM!

Final score from tonight, and this time it was NOT an upset:

Warroad 5, East Grand Forks 0

All 20 of our contestants picked Warroad to win, and two - Knight7 and mnhockey3535 (who else?) got the score right. A box score for this game is not yet available, but assuming this score is right, here is our Leaderboard going into this week's final six games tomorrow:

Minnetonka 2, Wayzata 1

Minnetonka came back from a one goal deficit to score two in the 3rd period to defeat the Trojans in an afternoon game at Pagel Activity Center. Darby Flatley tied it up at one, three and a half minutes into the 3rd, and Laura Bowman, on an assist from Amy Peterson, scored with 3:41 to go to win it for the Skippers. Kaycie Palesch scored for Wayzata, while in goal the Trojans’ McKenna Lorenz made 32 saves to keep the game close. Sydney Rossman stopped all but one of 15 Wayzata’s shots to get the one goal win.

In our contest all 20 contestants went with the No. 1AA rated Skippers and pick up a single point. Five thought it would be a one goal game, but they all had it 3-2.

Stillwater 7, Hastings 0

Stillwater, unranked for the first time all season, erupted for 5 goals in the 3rd period to soundly defeat the visiting 18th ranked Hastings Raiders. Six different players scored goals for the Ponies, with Hannah Okerstrom the only one to get two. Allie Pasiuk recorded 20 saves to earn the shutout.

Our prognosticators were fairly evenly split on this game, with a slight majority – 11 to 9 – favoring Stillwater. There were no correct scores as just about everybody thought it would be a much closer contest.

Andover 3, Blaine 2

Andover took a 3-0 lead on goals from Paige Dale, Sierra Langlie and Michelle Holmes, but Blaine battled back to score two of their own in the 3rd period to make it close. Amy Schlagel and Katie Swanstrom got the Bengals goals, and Kiersten Falck had two assists. For the game Andover had a 26-19 edge in shots on goal.

All but one of our prognosticators picked the Huskies to win, and we had two – backspin and Otter - who got the score right as well.

Eden Prairie 4, Hopkins 1

Eden Prairie got balanced scoring from four different players to beat Hopkins 4-1 at home. Allison Koloski, Anna Johnson and Charly Dahlquist each scored to put the Eagles up 3-0 before Hopkins forward Corbin Boyd responded with a power play goal at 5:58 of the 3rd period. Ashley Astor put the game away with an empty netter with 39 seconds remaining. McKenzie Johnson came up with 21 saves on 22 Royals shots.

Once again we had two, this time Silent But Deadly and 36Guy, who guessed the score and add a bonus point. 14 others also picked the Eagles to win and add a single point each.

Still waiting on the results for the Orono vs. Chaska/Chanhassen and Warroad vs. Roseau games. Look for an updated Leaderboard to be posted shortly.

Orono 5, Chaska/Chanhassen 5 (OT)

In what turned out to be a real barn-burner, Orono and Chaska/Chanhassen traded goals all night until Orono’s Stephanie Knight and then Emily Knight scored consecutive goals 22 seconds apart in the 3rd period to tie the game at 5 and send the game into overtime. Emma Silkey had a hat trick for Chaska/Chanhassen. For the game Chaska/Chanhassen outshot Orono 30-21.

We did have one person – Racki2016 – who predicted a tie, and as a result picks up a point on the rest of the field. Nice call, Racki2016!
