It's odd that they talked about kids who grew up playing hockey in Penn taking a lot of the spots on the team. I remember when MN would have 1/4 or a 1/3 of the team, at least it seemed.
Hockey is obviously growing all over the U.S. and I believe kids here are lacking in development as 17-18 yrs olds if they are staying in hs hockey. Grimaldi from CA scored the two goals in the gold medal game while Lucia doesn't play and only registers 2 shots on goal all tournament?

The declining number of Minnesotans isn't really a new thing - people fondly remember the '80 Olympic team, but there were 5 Minnesotans on the '88 Olympic team, 4 in '92, 5 in '94, 2 in '98, and 1 in '02. Basically, there are lot more Americans playing than there used to be, and they come from all over. If you like hockey it's a good thing, even though it can be humbling for Minnesotans.
And the kids playing Canadian junior as a rule don't go up there until they are 16 or older, so the American system must be doing something right up until then. Perhaps more can be done at that point to keep them here, but if we're producing players that CHL teams want it's also a good thing.

5 in 2010, and 3 of the alternates. Plus 2 more Shattuck alums. Minnesota is still the leader in USA hockey, even if there is a year or two that Team USA isn't full of MN players. Like xy said, it's good for the game.xy wrote:The declining number of Minnesotans isn't really a new thing - people fondly remember the '80 Olympic team, but there were 5 Minnesotans on the '88 Olympic team, 4 in '92, 5 in '94, 2 in '98, and 1 in '02.
