Warroad 3, Thief River Falls 1
This was one of those games where all the scoring was done in one period, in this case the second. And in the second it didn’t take long for Warroad to get going. Kayla Gardner scored just 28 seconds in, and Mariah Gardner followed just 26 seconds later to put the Warriors up 2-0. Emily Bergland got one back for Thief River Falls later in the period, but Lynn Astrup scored unassisted with 2:04 left in the period to make it 3-1. For the game the Warriors outshot the Prowlers 25-17.
The game was a little closer than most of our prognosticators thought it would be, and in fact everyone picked Warroad to win. There were three correct scores, by hockeyfan87, Bleedinred and backspin. Nice start to the night (and week) for these folks!
New Prague 4, Red Wing 3
The visiting New Prague Trojans scored three goals in the 3rd period to upset No. 2 ranked Red Wing 4-3. Trailing 1-3 going into the third, New Prague got goals from Sarah Larson and Lindsay Paschke to tie it at 3-3. Then at 13:42, just 44 seconds after Paschke’s tying goal, Jordan Anderson scored the game winner, on an assist from Catie Skaja, her second of the game. Paschke finished with two goals and an assist, while Paige Haley had two goals for the Wingers. Lots of offense in this one, as the final shot totals were 46-39 Red Wing.
A huge upset according to our panel, as only two of twenty predicted New Prague would win. And, wouldn’t you know, backspin gets his second consecutive correct score on the night, accumulating 4 points in the first two reported games.
I hope to report on Wayzata/Eden Prairie and Edina/Hopkins and post our Leaderboard as soon as these two games are shown as final on the Hub.

And in the last two games this evening it was:
Edina 4, Hopkins 4 (OT Tie)
Riley Anderson, on an assist from Taylor Williamson, scored the tying goal with just 43 seconds remaining to salvage a tie for the visiting Hornets. Corbin Boyd had a goal and three assists for Hopkins, while Liz Trautz had two goals for Edina. Edina finished with a substantial 43-26 advantage in shots on goal.
As is almost always the case when there is a tie, just about everyone is blanked with zero points. I say “just about everyone” because in this case we have one very astute prognosticator – Nordic – who did predict a tie, and at 3-3 came very close to picking up two points on everyone else.
Eden Prairie 5, Wayzata 2
Angie Heppelmann scored three goals for the hat trick as the Eagles skated past the Trojans at the Eden Prairie Community Center. Anna Johnson scored Eden Prairie’s other two goals, while Kaycie Palesch and Mara Dougherty scored for Wayzata. The Eagles had 26 shots on goal while holding Wayzata to just 15.
15 of 20 on our panel favored the No. 3 ranked Eagles to win this game, but there were no correct scores.
So, with 4 of 12 of this week’s games now in the books, here is the top of our Leaderboard:
1. backspin – 4
2. fishfreak11 – 3
Bleedinred – 3
Nordic – 3
5. Thirteen tied with 2!
18. Three with 1
Until Thursday....
Edited 1/16/13 to show the correct shots on goal in the Edina/Hopkins game. Thanks to allhoc11 for the update.

I'm not sure if the Hub is wrong, but I was at this game, and it sure seemed like Edina had a decided advantage in Shots on goal.......I know it can vary based on arena and scorekeeper, but it seemed like Edina had a 2-1 advantage as a spectator.MNHockeyFan wrote: Edina 4, Hopkins 4 (OT Tie)
Shots on goal were almost dead even in this one, with Edina having a slight 27-26 edge.

Thanks but I can only go by what was officially reported. But I certainly understand that if the shots were not counted correctly it wouldn't be the first time.allhoc11 wrote:I'm not sure if the Hub is wrong, but I was at this game, and it sure seemed like Edina had a decided advantage in Shots on goal.......I know it can vary based on arena and scorekeeper, but it seemed like Edina had a 2-1 advantage as a spectator.

In our lone game of the night it was:
Cretin-Derham Hall 3, Hastings 2
Rachel Seibel’s goal at 13:51 of the second period proved to be the game winner for the visiting Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders in their 3-2 victory over Hastings at the Hastings Civic Arena. Shots on goal favored Hastings by a slight 31-28 margin.
In our Week 11 contest 16 of 20 favored CDH to win, and three - Racki2016, Nordic and MnHockeyFan
- predicted CDH’s 3-2 margin of victory and get the bonus point.
So, entering tomorrow’s Lake Conference battle between Edina and Eden Prairie, and Buffalo’s northern excursion to #1A Warroad, here is our Leaderboard:

Two upsets this evening, particularly the "Big Game" way up north:
Buffalo 2, Warroad 1
In what has to rank as one of the biggest upsets of the year, Buffalo knocked off No. 1A Warroad 2-1 at the Olympic Arena in Warroad. The Bison got goals from Madi Jewell, who opened the game's scoring just two and a half minutes in, and Katie Rooney who scored with just under five minutes remaining. Rooney also assisted on Jewell’s goal for a two point night. Kayla Gardner, on an assist from Layla Marvin, scored the lone goal for the Warriors. On the night the Bison had a slight 31-28 edge in shots on goal, but coincidentally the shots in both the 2nd and 3rd periods were dead even at 10 and 11 each, respectively. Buffalo’s Lindsey Hartfiel made 27 saves in goal to pick up the win.
Only 2 of 20 had Buffalo winning, and I know that at least one of them is a big Bison supporter!
Eden Prairie 2, Edina 1
Eden Prairie rebounded from a 1-0 deficit, scoring two goals in the third period, to defeat the visiting No. 5AA Edina Hornets 2-1. Edina’s Taylor Williamson opened the scoring at 15:47 of the 1st period, but Eden Prairie’s Angie Heppelmann, on an assist from Charly Dahlquist, tied it at 2:47 of the 3rd. The Eagles’ Lauren Boyle, assisted by Tess Roehl, then scored the game winner on a power play at 7:15. EP’s McKenzie Johnson stopped 26 Edina shots for the win.
Surprisingly, only 5 of 20 contestants picked No. 4AA Eden Prairie to win, even though they were the higher ranked team. So I guess you could say that the outcome was only an upset in the minds of our panel, not by the "professionals" who actually do the rankings for Let's Play Hockey!
With tonight’s two "upsets" there were not a lot of points scored by our group….roughly the same as the number of goals scored in both of tonight’s games!
And none of us managed to get both games right...
Headed into Saturday’s final five games, here is where things now stand - quite the logjam and there are many who are still very much in it:
1. fishfreak11 - 5
Racki2016 - 5
Bleedinred - 5
Nordic - 5
backspin - 5
6. sinbin - 4

And the upsets continue…
Anoka 2, Andover 1
Blair Parent and Emilie Brigham each scored power play goals in the last two minutes of the first period to lead the unranked Anoka Tornadoes past seventh-ranked Andover at Anoka Arena. Mikayla Goodin scored for Andover at 3:30 of the 2nd period, but the Huskies could not get another one past Anoka’s Molly Scarborough, who finished with 25 saves.
ayhfan was the only prognosticator who thought Anoka would win this game and picks up a point on everyone else!
Hopkins 3, Minnetonka 1
Nina Rodgers and Shortie Sheran each scored in the 2nd period and Jillaine DeYoung added an insurance goal in the 3rd to lead Hopkins over No. 1 ranked Minnetonka in a big Lake Conference matchup at Pagel Activity Center. DeYoung also assisted on Rodgers’ goal to finish with two points on the afternoon. But the No. 1 star of the game had to be Royals goaltender Erin O'Neil, who stopped all but one of Minnetonka’s 46 shots on goal. Congratulations to Miss O’Neil!
In this one our panel totally struck out as everyone picked the Skippers to win. Congratulations to the entire Hopkins team for proving us all wrong!
Thief River Falls 6, Buffalo 1
Led by Sylvia Marolt’s hat trick (plus two assists) and Emily Bergland’s four assists (plus a goal of her own) the Prowlers of Thief River Falls handed Buffalo a crushing defeat a day after the Bisons upset #1A ranked Warroad on their weekend northern trip. Brandi Malwitz also had a goal and two assists for Thief River, and Frances Marshall made 21 saves while surrendering just a late goal by Buffalo’s Sam Noetzelman. For the game the Prowlers had a decisive 43-22 shots advantage.
Once again points were hard to come by in our contest, as just 4 of 20 picked TRF to win. Of these four we had one correct score, that being by fishfreak11 who adds the bonus point. Nice call!
Benilde-St. Margaret’s 3, Wayzata 1
Brittany Wheeler scored two goals and Kelly Pannek had a goal and two assists to lead the Red Knights over the Trojans at the Plymouth Ice Center. Hannah Bangen scored for Wayzata six minutes into the 3rd period to pull the Trojans within a goal, but Wheeler’s second goal two minutes later again put BSM up by two. The Red Knights dominated Wayzata in shots on goal, 32 to 5.
The first game of the day where the favorite team was able to win! In this one 19 picked Benilde, and there were three who correctly predicted the 3-1 score: Knight7, Silent But Deadly and sinbin.
Still no score in the Stillwater/Mounds View game. I'll post the final standings for Week 11 as soon as it's up.
Anoka 2, Andover 1
