St. Paul Johnson is not in 4AA, but in 4A.

Correct. This must have been a late change? Minnhock.com had it wrong, also.

Interesting that Como Park is in 4AA.

Johnson is a stand alone program, Como is a co-op with Central. Central is a large enrollment school and even given their demographics plays at the highest class in nearly all sports - their football team is in 5A out of 6 classes.

I recall there was some worry about Johnson's high school program last year. It was said they didn't have many players returning, and they were searching for options to merge with another school to keep afloat.

Since they are still a stand alone team, do they have a JV team?

It would be a shame if their program folds in any way, considering their history.

I have heard similar. Although it appears to not be that uncommon, it also appears as though they don't have a Bantam A team, which definitely affects numbers.

It is crazy to see where city hockey is now compared to where it used to be. It'll be interesting to see what high school teams Mpls and St Paul have in 5 or 10 years.

Indeed. At this rate, there will be only two teams. St. Paul Area and Minneapolis Area. (excluding teams like BSM)

The sport of hockey is just not as popular as it use to be in those areas.

Of course, this is just speculation, and only time will tell.

On Lee's Minnhock page he has links to his rankings from 10 and 15 years ago, I urge everyone to look at those.

10 years ago Coon Rapids and Greenway were top 20 teams, Edison, Washburn, South, and Southwest all had teams, 15 years ago Henry had a team. When my kids were playing in the mid to late 90's it would have been unthinkable for there not to be a program at Washburn or Edison, let alone South or Southwest.

I think the coaches association should have seen the greater good and done something to help these programs, it wasn't until after most of them had died that the MSHSL put in it's F/R lunch multiplier.

I've heard that Johnson HS and Como HS teams will merge next year and have a single team. The high school merger becomes the only solution. The youth merger was probably difficult for the Johnson historians. Highland Park has a team so that will make two teams in St. Paul next season.

Minneapolis has one team after having had 11 varsity hockey teams in the early 70s. Four of the schools (West, Central, Vocational and Marshall/ University) no longer even exist.

I don't know why Johnson/Como youth are in D8, they should be in D2. They have 2 PeeWee teams and 2 Squirt teams.

Minneapolis youth hockey is growing with 7 PeeWee teams, 8 Squirt teams and 20 Mite teams. Excellent leadership (SW Prez), recruiting and some good teams.

Especially Southwest. 14 state tournament trips (though none since 1980). Unbeaten state champions 1970. Two-time runners-up. A storied program in memory only.

I would add that it is quite illogical and a disservice to the schools who have to co-op to field a team to place them in AA.
While I don't know if this is something that is considered as much as many claim when choosing high school, having many of these programs in Class A could only help them retain players.
