The Prep team is the Midget AAA team. Brodeur was in the bench.

On SSM's web site it has two different rosters for Prep and Midget AAA.

Well done recruiting department of BSM and STA and great job by the players on the ice. Arguably the 2 best teams in Minnesota.
Add to the group HM, and you have three of the top teams in MN.

Let me see. Last years AA final was BSM vs HM, and the A champ was STA. We could very well see a repeat this year.

Private school hockey is taking over Minnesota......

Tenoverpar...thank you for clarification. I kind of sensed that but was not quite sure, my mistake.

For clarification between AAA and Prep, they are two seperate teams. i do not know what the difference is in terms of qualification for nationals and all that jazz, but i do know that Prep and AAA are same age levels but the AAA team would either be kids who didnt make prep or are being held there for other reasons (younger, need a year to develop, etc...). They would be equivalent to teams more like average AA high school teams. For example, SSM AAA v. Burnsville or Lakeville schools. AAA isnt great but they are a quality team. Play a little bit more physical and in your face style than Prep due to less skill.

Brodeur has 3 kids at the school. A goalie on the Prep, a goalie (more skilled than his older brother in my opinion) on AAA, and a skater on AA which is SSM's equivalent of a JV team.[/quote]

This is a big game for Shattuck as well when they play MSHL teams. Do you not think they want to be the best team in the state? Shattuck gave it everything they had last night (actually thought they played with more fire and emotion than they usually do). These two games cant be blown off as exhibition games for Shattuck, they gave it everything they had but it was not enough.

I stand corrected.
The Prep team is their top team and there is a Brodeur goalie on the team.

I'm starting to see a trend of SSM players bailing out before they advance to preps (UND recruit Charlie Pelnik, for example). I wonder if SSM isn't just becoming another AAA program, where the Bantam and U16 teams are super talented, but many of the best players skip the prep team and move on to juniors? Of course, that happens in the MSHSL too, but it's probably part of the reason why SSM prep doesn't dominate MSHSL teams like it used to.

Better stay off the cough syrup. Advantage SSM on EVERYTHING. 8-1 Shattuck

according to MYhockeyrankings SSM is #1 for 18U Tier 1
http://myhockeyrankings.com/index.php

So I don't think it's that SSM is over-rated, it's MN HS hockey must be under-rated. I did watch the game

it begs one question from me, I wonder how many HS teams MN could send to the National Tier 1 Tourney?? 10?

and if MN sent 1 or 2 HS all star teams it would appear that they may be playing for the championship most, if not every year.

one could argue by league, the MN HS (AA) and a few MN HS (A) is actually the top hockey in the country, not saying this in regards to single players that leave to play elsewhere are not as good as these kids, just MN HS VS Tier 1 league vs league.

either way, I saw a lot of youth players from all around the metro area watching the game last night, what a great game for them to see and a packed house to boot

I thought this was an excellent hockey game, the final score really didn't indicate that the game was a lot closer. SSM outshot BSM 30-17 and that's with BSM getting the only power play of the game. The major penalty was questionable, maybe a minor, wouldn't even been a penalty at higher hockey levels the kid turned right before impact, but because the check made a lot of noise and the kid didn't get up made the difference. BSM being the home team brought their 1st line out whenever SSM had their 4th line out there, creating BSM's first goal.

+1.

It ~was~ an excellent game -- and an emotional one on both sides, but pretty much in control. Very disciplined teams. Coach Pauly was screaming his lungs out on several occasions.

Best HS game I've been to this year so far.

Anyone who has doubts about BSM's defense and goaltending can now shut up; they can bring it when it's needed. They played rock solid against the best offense they're likely to see this year (outside of HM and STA, of course). Numerous shut-downs in front of the net, great trailer coverage, very tough in the corners. Probably one or two breakdowns in the third period -- the last of which precipitated a time out and a red-faced Pauly.

Sprang also had an awesome game in goal, and probably had a little something to prove -- nice celly after the final buzzer tells me this meant something extra to him. (Did he jump -- or get pushed from SSM??? Is he a local???)

I disagree on the major hit, though. It happened right in front of me and it looked very dangerous. Given that the refs were letting the kids play and not calling anything -- dozens of high hits from both sides, clear holding, hooking and slashing infractions -- I think they went easy on the major. the kid probably should have gotten a 5 and 10. I was surpised he didn't; this is Jabby's team and rink, after all.

Was the game still up in the air? Yes, but after the timeout and before the major, BSM was clearly controlling. Aside from those two or three shifts at the beginning of the third, the first two lines were dominating SSM's. Besse was head and shoulders the best player on the ice. Naas, Moore, and Labosky right behind.

The hit was a textbook boarding. He did not turn before impact as he was going into the boards chest first to grab the puck. This is exactly what the rules are in place to prevent. There was 4 refs on the ice. They discussed it and made the correct call. He didn't get up due to being piled into the boards from behind. You should try that and see how it feels.

If you made a Minnesota Mr hockey list of 20 guys, that team would be national champions imo... So Shattuck didnt impress me losing to a school thats lost to 5-6 MSHSL schools this year...

Just out of Curiosity what would your All state elite team be? If nothing, just the first line or 2?

MORECOWBELL- Your shots are a little off, you listed saves not shots
Shots were 32-22 and the 1 powerplay BSM got they were just running out the clock not putting shots on net after the 1st shot of PP Besse scored on. I actually think SSM had 4 shots and BSM 3 dring the powerplay since BSM was running clock.

I disagree on others interpretation of the major call, if you turn just before the hit that player is at fault. The BSM coach has no class, he was goading the refs all night, and where was the penalty when the SSM player was injured out of the game. Feel sorry for the 3 and 4 lines for BSM I;m sure they hardly broke a sweat. I can see why the kid is headed to the WHL.

How many 9th graders are on the rosters of other top teams, like Edina, Tonka, Wayzata, EP, Hill-Murray, etc.? And for the few that are, do they play on the first line? And for those who don't, do they bolt for the WHL right before playoffs are going to start?

And look at Shattuck's roster, they don't even have any 10th graders, let alone 9th. They are all juniors and seniors.

And say what you want about Pauly, but he did just coach his team to a win over the 3-time defending national AAA champs. Hard to argue that he overplayed his top two lines when his team actually got stronger as the game went on. You would think fatigue would have set in at some point, but it obviously didn't as Benilde managed to score the last 3 goals of the game. Give the guy some credit!

I didn't have the opportunity to watch last night's game, so I can't comment on that, but just like there is a lot more to play than stats, there is a lot more to a game than the final score.

In the game with STA, sure STA won, but that is because their defense is so good. Shots were totally lopsided, and the play was in the STA end all night. I'm not at all trying to take anything away from STA or BSM; they won, milk it with all you can. But to marginalize Shattuck because of losing two games is quite ridiculous.

If "some 10th graders" means two then you are right!

http://ssmhockey.org/2012-13-boys-prep-roster/

BSM has 7 sophomores and with Baer's departure they now have 2 freshmen.

I know nothing of tryouts and how you get on which team, but they have 13 sophomores between the three teams. Also don't know how much moving their is from year to year. All of that likely plays a role.

Traditionally the Prep team has been almost all upperclassmen (juniors and seniors). This season they do have the two sophomores, but last season they just had one and the two seasons before that they had none. So in the last four years they've only had 3 sophomores total, and no freshmen.

And currently there is only one sophomore (a goalie) and no freshmen on their Midget AAA team, made up of guys who were not quite good enough to make the Prep team. So between their top two teams they have 40 rostered players, only 3 of which are sophomores with no freshmen.

Most all of their sophomores are on either their Midget AA team (11 of 25) or their U16 team (17 of 20). Nearly all of these will move up next year to either the Midget AAA or Prep teams.

Their youngest team is Bantam where they have 15 freshmen and 4 8th graders.

So, between the 5 boys teams they have 104 players in total - quite the hockey factory!
