Not surprised by Zevnik, Dugas is still a good goaltender but I'm surprised Stumpf is out. I would pick Zevnik over Stumpf any day anyhow, but it is curious he is not up..

So the All Star Teams have great goalies also....

Are there no Adam Wilcox's out there playing for a public team?

Come on man, agree Stumpf should at least be on the list.

Another strike against public schools, especially Class A

Dugas all the way

Post by Wallyworld »

I think Dugas pulled ahead with the last Hill-STA game which was 3-0 Hill with 35 seconds left.. Season numbers are extremely close. Save % goes to Dugas .942 to .938 while Zevnik has an edge in GAA 1.38 to 1.33. One big difference with similar (SOSchedule) is that Dugas has 7 shutouts vs. 3 for Zevnik. Also, Zevnik played STA's last game against SSP, getting the shutout while Dugas sat while his backup got the 0 (i.e - would have likely been another easy shutout and increased save% for Dugas.)

As for Zevnik's 2 Championship's .. My counter is that they shouldn't be considered because they are not about SR year, and are also Class A. In those years, as well as this (unless Hill falls to Simley or Sibley), Zevnik failed to help his team win their own conference even once...There's also 3 Senior year meetings to evaluate. In those games (1 STA win, 1 Hill win, & 1 Hill shootout victory - schwann's cup title) Zevnik gave up 7 regular time goals plus the OT goal, while Dugas allowed 6 goals. Their save %'s in those games (not including Schwann's S/O winner) are .938 for Dugas and .924 for Zevnik.

Also, talk about apples to apples. Both of these goalies shared time for their respective Elite League teams with a 20 game schedule against the 5 teams. Team defense can be a factor but since Zevnik's team made it to the championship, it's hard to say he was at a disadvantage. I say this because Dugas posted much better numbers. For GAA & Save % it was Dugas 2.60 and .924 vs. 3.75 and .902 for Zevnik. tough to argue against those numbers when they were against the same 5 teams. In fact, of goalies playing at least 6 games Dugas was 2nd in both GAA and Save% to the unbelievable Chase Perry who had a 1.95 GAA and a .945 Save% - against the top players in the state...

So my vote goes to Dugas. Also included in my consideration is the recency of last 2 meetings which went to Dugas (last game, save % for Zevnik was .903 vs .964 for Dugas ) Plus Zevnik gave up 4 goals on 19 shots last night against Tartan, which likely cost STA a conference co-championship.

I'll guess both goaltending careers end next month.

Unless you know something I don't, Dugas is easily a Junior A goalie (maybe only NAHL though). I could see him taking a couple of seasons to attempt to earn a schollie. I don't know about Zevnik.

Very impressive and complete summary of stats for these two. What is really amazing is that there was not some connection to Willie Brown being a factor in this?????? :D

Really tough to say.
Zevnik allowed 6 goals to Tartan this season to Dugas' 1.
Dugas allowed 4 goals to both Mahtomedi and NSP while Zevnik allowed 1 to both.
Zevnik allowed 1 to Benilde, Dugas 2.
Both allowed 1 to Edina.
Zevnik 2 to Tonka, Dugas 1.
Against each other they are close as well. Although that's hard to compare as that isn't comparing how Zevnik did against STA with how Dugas did or how Dugas did against HM with how Zevnik did, which would be the only real comparison that would matter, although stupid and convoluted.

The single game comparisons are so close.

My guess is people that have seen them both play who know a little something about technique will be deciding and not someone who is simply looking at stats.

Does the Frank Brimesk award apply exclusively to a goaltender's senior year of play? In other words, is any consideration given to a goaltenders previous year(s) of varsity play? Opening that scope, there is a larger gap between Zevnick and Dugas. That would make the decision much easier to call IMO.

Who cares what goalie stopped more shots on the same team, you need to look at the details.. Quality of shots, , the D, scoring chances... None of the shots on Zevnik were the same as Dugas.. this whole post is irrelevant

Did I leave that out? Sorry. Did you see what Willie did to Zevnik on the Schwann's shootout winner - top shelf & embarrassing.... Guilty as charged about the bias though.. Good call.. We all have our favorite players...

I feel compelled to set the record straight to some extent. This season Hill and STA are 1-1-1. A shot out may be necessary to determine the winner of an invitational tournament, but other than that it has no bearing on anything. As far as I'm concerned, Hill and STA are Schwans Gold Division Co-Champions. That's unsatisfying but it's reality. Some years there has been a shot out in the semis and thats even worse, really muddies it up.

Wallyworld mentioned an over time goal, and I'm not sure when that happened. The only overtime was at the Schwan's game and since they went to a shoot out I'm pretty sure there was no goal during the OT.

My question of the award would be why are there only two finalist. Why not five. Mr hockey has ten finalists. This way more goalies could get some recognition on having a great career.
