Section 3A Play-in Playoff Quarterfinal Game Preview
#8 Seed Worthington Trojans (4-15-0) vs. #1 Luverne Cardinals (21-3-1)
Luverne Cardinals
Team Outlook: The highflying Cardinals come flying in with 21 wins on what many consider the weakest schedule in the state. Luverne is led up front by Skyler Wenninger (29-28-57 pts.), Gunnar Olson (21-32-53 pts.), Logan Norman (16-33-49 pts.), Jonny Solma (13-28-41 pts.) and freshman scoring champion Chaz Smedsrud (23-27-50 pts.). On the Blue line they have two studs in Austin Maxwell (5-32-37 pts.) & Toby Sengvongxay (16-23-39 pts.). In the nets they have a very solid goalie in Kendall Meyer (18-3-1 1.51GAA .973SV%). The Cardinals look to be the complete package however; they have had trouble putting all the pieces together (Coaching) as the season has progressed. These guys have to be the most hated team in the section they talk a ton of trash on here plus a #1seed… Big Target on their back!
VS.
Worthington Trojans
Team Outlook: The Trojans have had a tough year. They returned most of their lineup last season only to win 3 games this year. The Trojans are led by Levi Leach (12-11-23 pts.), Andrew Johnson (13-8-21 pts.) & Jacob Oberloh (11-5-16 pts.). Depth has been an issue all year for the Trojans. Also, staying out of the penalty box has been very critical. Worthington is averaging 16 minutes in penalties a game. Not going to win hockey games doing that. The Trojans will go as far as Rylan Scholtes (3-13-0 5.82 GAA .850 SV%) can take them. He has the ability to steal a game in the net. He is (1-0) in the playoffs and coming off a big shut out over Fairmont.
Prediction: Luverne 5 Worthington 2
This game will be closer then most people think. I think the Trojans put a scare into the overconfident Cardinals but Luverne will just have too much talent in the end. There will be plenty of Trojan fans out there you!
#5 seed Windom Eagles (13-9-0) vs. #4 seed Marshall (11-10-1)
Marshall Tiger
Team Outlook: The Tigers are led by their seniors. They will go as far as Quinn Horvath (18-14-32 pts.), Beau Mikel (14-10-24 pts.) & Corey Clark (9-11-20 pts.) can take them. Kids leaving early and injuries have depleted their depth and d unit. The Tigers will lean heavily on their top line and will need some big games from Mason Campion (8-4-1 2.90 GAA .889 SV%) in the nets. This has been a tough transition year for the Tigers many knew you would see a decline in talent and also a new coaching style as seemed to stunt them. If things go bad early how will the seniors respond this is the last chance for Marshall for a while their program is on a serious decline.
VS.
Windom Eagles
Team Outlook: The Eagles are led by Travis Janssen (38-25-63 pts) and his line mates Zach Bartosh (21-24-45 pts.) and Devin Nielsen (21-8-29 pts.). This is a very potent and dangerous line that will play a ton of minutes. The Eagles are led on the backend by Kyle Luhmann (5-12-17 pts.). Windom will need Ben Stubbe (7-7-0 3.83 GAA .882 SV%) to steal a game, which he is capable of. Two things Windom has going for them they play a team they have beat early in the year and they have a top notch coach in Mr. Ammerman. He has really turned this program around in only his second year. This program is on the upswing!
Prediction: Marshall 4 Windom 2
The Tigers play with a serious chip on their shoulder this game their core group of seniors will not lose on home ice. They shut down Janssen’s line and Beau & Quinn bury some pucks. I just think the Tigers pull this one out.
Will be back later with the Bottom part of the Bracket Preview!

Section 3A Play-in Playoff Quarterfinal Game Preview
#7 Seed Redwood Valley Cardinals (3-13-0) vs. #2 New Ulm Eagles (12-12-1)
New Ulm Eagles
Team Outlook: Getting the #2 seed is actually a good thing for the Eagles lose the target and continue their quest for 4 straight state appearances. They are led up font by Blake Neumann (24-22-46 pts.), Wyatt Peterson (11-31-42 pts.), Brandon Helget (18-14-32 pts.) & Judd Davis (14-15-29 pts.). They have watching some very young dman grow up on the blue line. They have a a tender who has one big games in Brach Kraus (10-10-1 3.27 GAA .891 SV%). The Eagles have good coaching and they know how to bring talent together to make strong playoff runs. They are the Section favorite beware of the Eagles.
VS.
Redwood Valley Eagles
Team Outlook: Redwood is really struggling this year. They also have been hit hard by injuries. They lack talent and they are not deep. They don’t have the goaltending of a Worthington. They only played 16 games this year and really looking at their tam it is probably for the best. Program really needs a shot in the arm it was only 3 years ago they were one year wonders like Luverne this year. Just shows you how far SWC teams can fall and how fast it happens.
Prediction: New Ulm 10 Redwood Valley 0
New Ulm knows how to take care of a lower seed this will be the only blowout of the first round.
The Game of the Night preview will be up later!

GAME OF THE NIGHT
Section 3A Play-in Playoff Quarterfinal Game Preview
#6 Hutchinson Tigers (5-19-0) vs. #3 Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato Dragons (9-16-0)
Litchfield/Dassel Cokato
Team Outlook: The Dragons are led up front be their all senior first line of Aaron Haataja (19-10-29 pts.), Kent Ryynanen (7-13 20 pts.) & Mike Spreiter (9-9-18 pts.). This line has been the key to the Dragons success all year. They have 2 other lines that will grind and play very physical. They don’t have the strongest D-man but they have been seeing top notch forwards all year. The thing that makes the Dragons dangerous is they have the top goalie in Section 3A Braenden Wahl (9-16-0 4.49 GAA .889 SV %). Wahl has seen over 1000 shots this year and has stood tall. He can steal a game like he did the first time vs. Hutch. If the Dragons can stay out of the box and stay disciplined they should be dangerous.
VS.
Hutchinson Tigers
Team Outlook: This is the best “Team” in this section. No one wants to play these guys don’t let their record fool you they are very good. They have some top end players up front Tory Adams (8-15-23 pts.), Matthew Cowger (13-10-23 pts.) & Cody Nielson (7-6-13 pts.) lead the way for the Tigers. They have good depth with 3 solid lines when everyone is healthy. They have played a very tough schedule to get them battle tested for a playoff run. Their D-man have been solid. Their Achilles heel is goaltending. It has been down right dreadful at times. They will need the senior to step up and just play 3 average games. If he can just play average the Tigers can win this Section. A very dangerous 6 seed and I look for them to pull the first round upset.
Prediction: Hutch 5 LDC 3
This is going to be a battle with two of the top programs in this section going head to head. Should be a great heavy weight fight. However, Hutch just has too much depth and talent in the end. Beware the Tigers are not to be overlooked very dangerous 6 seed.
Hope the Weather Doesn’t mess things up looking forward to a fun Night the Playoffs are HERE!

I dont understand people who want to bash New Ulm because they co-oped with Sleepy Eye. For the last time the move was done to save the Sleepy Eye program, not bolster New Ulm's.
Merging with a team that has had 30 TOTAL wins the past 10 years (12 of which came in their final year of existence playing the weakest schedule in the state) has such a small bearing on the overall quality of New Ulms program.
The argument is about the equivalent of saying Luverne is Co-oped with Adrian, might as well bash them because there is a chance one of their players might be from their co-op!
I'm not bashing but am pointing out differences between the two top teams in this section, & cannot help but pull for Luverne as the little guy.
Your example of the coop argument is lame. NE enrollment without the SE coop: 946. With the coop: 1408 (1232 without Springfield)
Luverne enrollment: 310, with the Adrian coop: 467
Luverne's cooped enrollment is still less than half of the NU pre-SE coop enrollment. It's the smallest school vs the biggest school in the section. Probably a non issue for some, but an interesting fact. Heck, Luverne may be one of the smallest schools in Class A.:
New to coach: Take a look at Sec 8A Kittson Central 14- 9 on the season with a wopping 120 kids to choose from in a co op with Lancaster MN.
I would say this is must be the smallest program; in the state offering hockey.
Talk about a David vs Goliath nearly every game KC plays.

Hutch has top end players with 8g, 13g, and 7g for the season. They don't have a kid that has 30 points this season. Not sure why you are saying no one wants to play Hutch. Really?? Their goaltending is terrible and they are not very deep!! The D core is average at best.. Hutch has what 5 wins this year. They have beaten Litch, LSH, Waconia, Eveleth, and Sauk Rapids. They don't have a quality win all year and they were presented the most opportunities for a quality win! True they probably played one of the tougher schedules in the Section but come on they have 5 freakin wins.. If they win the section it is an embarassment for 3A..
Just out of curiosity how many times have you seen Hutch play this year?Deck Slide wrote:Section 3A HockeyScout wrote:GAME OF THE NIGHT

Ok, not knowing a thing about this section, other than just looking over the wins of the top 4 seeds, how is it fair that any team in this section go to state? 6-7 of the top 10 teams in class A will not be able to make it to state to show off a talented well deserving team because these guys were placed in a cake section? Teams like SCC, or Totino , LF Princeton, Mahtomedhi get the shaft because an unranked team is hoarding the section??
Wow, now i see why people complain about re arranging the section.. And also feel the pain of Section 6AA..

Come on, the State high school league splits up the entire state into different regions/sections for ALL sports. Deal with it.GPGT wrote:Ok, not knowing a thing about this section, other than just looking over the wins of the top 4 seeds, how is it fair that any team in this section go to state? 6-7 of the top 10 teams in class A will not be able to make it to state to show off a talented well deserving team because these guys were placed in a cake section? Why do we even have section tournaments then? What you are saying is that all of the top 8 teams should make the state tourny.
Section tournament gives everyone an equally opportunity to make it to center stage.
See ya in the tourney ..... maybeGPGT wrote:Ok, not knowing a thing about this section, other than just looking over the wins of the top 4 seeds, how is it fair that any team in this section go to state? 6-7 of the top 10 teams in class A will not be able to make it to state to show off a talented well deserving team because these guys were placed in a cake section? Not at all, just that weak sections should have quality competitive teams in it.. Forest lake is in the same section as Grand Rapids, so distance has nothing to do with it apparently.. Just its unfortunate that 3A will get destroyed the first round when a quality opponent could be thereInYourFace09 wrote:GPGT wrote:Ok, not knowing a thing about this section, other than just looking over the wins of the top 4 seeds, how is it fair that any team in this section go to state? 6-7 of the top 10 teams in class A will not be able to make it to state to show off a talented well deserving team because these guys were placed in a cake section? Teams like SCC, or Totino , LF Princeton, Mahtomedhi get the shaft because an unranked team is hoarding the section??

Section tournament gives everyone an equally opportunity to make it to center stage.

Luverne did beat Princeton.......in Princeton by a score of 7-4. Not saying they have a shot at beating Saint Thomas, but over 90% of all the teams in the state cannot make that claim.GPGT wrote:Ok, not knowing a thing about this section, other than just looking over the wins of the top 4 seeds, how is it fair that any team in this section go to state? 6-7 of the top 10 teams in class A will not be able to make it to state to show off a talented well deserving team because these guys were placed in a cake section? If you don't think its fair, move down to SW Minnesota because that's the way the MSHSL arranges ALL of their sports.
I haven't seen them play but what makes Hutch the best "Team" in the section? They lost or split with all of the teams seeded above them or didn't play them at all. I also do not think that they have the scoring power to stick with New Ulm or Luverne due to the fact that it's been said that the goaltending has been dreadful at times. Hutch has to have everything play out "perfect" for them to make it out of this section. Three times. Period.notSoFast wrote:Just out of curiosity how many times have you seen Hutch play this year?Deck Slide wrote:Section 3A HockeyScout wrote:GAME OF THE NIGHT
I think the top two seeds have the scoring prowess to blow out teams or come back in a close game, but Hutch's record does not indicate that they can do that.
My predictions for tonights games:
Luverne vs. Worthington - 9-1...No question here.
Marshall vs. Windom - 4-3...Tight game, maybe an OT winner & could go either way.
LDC vs. Hutch - 3-4...Hutch pulls off one here.
New Ulm vs. Redwood - 10-2...No question here either.

I understand its the MSHSL that organizes all of this, but you would think they could see weak sections and throw a few top tier schools in the mix.. To me its not about seeing the top 8 down there.. Its giving the top schools a chance to be there.. Pretty sure Totino or STA would mind being in 3A.. Not that that matters for next year tho..

Why do we even have section tournaments then? What you are saying is that all of the top 8 teams should make the state tourny.
Section tournament gives everyone an equally opportunity to make it to center stage.
So therefore the sections would not be weak if you see them as a quality competitive teams?
Sounds like you are a bit sour as your team has several quality opponents.

LOL, NOTHING to do with it!! I live in Duluth and went to Duluth East, I coundn't care less about 3A, but came in here to try to find a reason for the weak section, I mean come on, am I way off? the #1 isn't even in the top 20.... I just want to know if Totino was in this section, would any one other than them ever get out of the section?
And just for my knowledge, when was the last time 3A made it out of the State 1/4s? Not trying to be rude, honestly asking when..

I've seen Hutch play twice, and Litch once.
Hutch
Controling emotions, inconsistent play in their defending zone, and individulism while carrying the puck will be their weaknesses.. Get control of those 3 areas, and good things could happen.
Litch
Strong net minding and front line will have to pull them through this first section game. Tendancy would be to get off their game if the opposition is controling play, or scoring early. They need to put the puck in early, and play a physical/fast paced game for success.

A better question for you; Outside of last year, when was the last time a 3A team did not play their first round game against the top rated A team competing at State, even though they do not seed 1-8? I am not big on looking back through records but from recent memory it has not happened.

Lourdes before the section realignment? Did Albert Lea ever win their first game in state?GPGT wrote:InYourFace09 wrote:GPGT wrote: Not at all, just that weak sections should have quality competitive teams in it.. Fun fact...Luverne had a few close section playoff games with Lourdes in the early 2000's.
