I think the reason that conferences are driven by football is that the relationship between enrollment and football is closer than in any other sport. I've been saying for 20 years that there should be separate conferences for football. Or maybe for football it would be section opponents. If football weren't a factor, conferences would be much more stable. For the last twenty-five years it's been a game of musical chairs, and someone always gets left without a seat.

Not really intending to highjack th ethread but the Big Nine enrollments for 2011-2012 from the MSHSL:
Mayo - 1506
Owatonna - 1442
John Marshall - 1391
Century - 1275
West - 1007
Winona - 997
Austin - 979
Faribault - 946
Albert Lea - 796
Mankato East - 784
The Missota schools:
Northfield - 1173
New Prague - 1111
Red Wing - 809
It seems the Missota schools both enrollment wise and geographical wise make sense in the Big Nine. Mayo and JM will get bigger while Century gets smaller.
