Duluth East vs Wayzata 3rd place

Post by dulutheastfan »

Could this be the best game of the tourney! Some speculated that this would be the final 2 teams and it could be a dandy. Will someone please keep some updates on this game here.

I can keep updates going for a while, though I may head down to the East section towards the end of the game to show some appreciation.

Toscano buries to make it 2-0 with 4:04 to go in the first. Hounds' top line is really flying.

2-0 after one; shots 11-4.

A bit unfortunate that Wayzata doesn't have more support here. Two years ago, another program in a similar position (Eagan) turned out in great numbers to watch the 3rd place game. Wayzata only has a smattering of students.

Forbort knocks one home off more quality passing from the East top line. 3-0 East.

5-1 East on a snipe by Beaulieu. 1:48 left in the 1st.

Edit: 5-1 after 2. Wayzata will have a little bit of 5-on-3 to start the 3rd. I'm going downstairs for the 3rd and the press conference. Be back afterwards.

1st period? Yikes. 21 shots in the 1st period by East? Double yikes.

Lee

Sorry, in the 2nd. 2nd is now over with shots 21-14.

Okay, better.

It is of note that East has never lost a third place game. 5-0 in school history.

East wins 7-3. Nice way to bounce back from last night's disappointing loss, Hounds!

And so another Hounds season comes to an end--and this one on the most positive note in a very long time. Obviously they would have liked a different result last night, but a title this season would always have been a tall order, and they bounced back with style today. They might not have won the big one, but four straight years with a trophy in March is something to be pretty darn impressive.

Thanks to this very deep senior class: kids who stepped in just this year Casen Sjerven, Cody Packingham, Tyler Sworsky, Beau Hughes, Wyatt Irwin, and Justin Smith; the excellent top line of Jack Forbort, Alex Toscano, and Ryan Lundgren; Dylan Parker, a fine goaltender; Andrew Kerr, one of the most entertaining high school enforcers you'll ever see; and Meirs Moore, the leader on the blue line who put this team on his back at times this year. Thanks for all the memories, and good luck wherever life takes you next. And thanks to the East coaching staff for doing a better job of getting more out of less this year than any other Hounds edition in my memory.

It's going to be tough to replace a lot of these guys, and this five-year run in which they've been legitimate title contenders in all but one is likely coming to an end. But there's still a fair amount of talent here, especially on the blue line, and the program is deep enough that they won't go off a cliff, even though they need to find a lot of new sources of goals. Combine that with what looks to be fairly weak 7AA, the Hounds won't be going away. Time for the next generation to make its mark.

With Bantam AA's making it to state and doing very well, and with Bunten and Altmann coming back as juniors, and with Bealieu and Trapp leading the D core (if Beaulieu stays) and with Kolars scoring ability, the hounds should be fine next year. That's all if Randolph stays though.

I think next year rides first on whether Randolph stays and second on whether Beaulieu stays. If both stay, they'll do well and Beaulieu will be up for the Reed Larson award.

From the Herb Brooks Foundation website:
The Herb Brooks award is to be given to the most qualified hockey player in the state tournament who strongly represents the values, characteristics, and traits that defined Herb Brooks. This prestigious award will commemorate the unending influence Herb Brooks had on the sport of hockey in Minnesota and throughout the world.

I'm just happy you didn't ask me to extrapolate on the criteria, because in that case, I had nothing. :)

I was really hoping they could take the 'ship, if nothing else for Kerr, he deserved a ring after that unfortunate series of events in 2011. Will never forget that 2011 Title Game where he made Rau his PLEASE BAN ME. Toscanos overtime winner in the semifinal the same year as well. No one should have to lose a title that way. The sophomores play really impressed me and Kolar had two big goals (Section Final and QF) along the way. Hard to replace Parker but East seems to always be able to find a goalie. Hopefully Moore gets picked up by a college team. He has great hands and vision. He reminds me alot of Jake Williams, who was part of the group of four D1 defensemen in 2009. He played juniors for awhile and now plays for AIC. Not top tier but its still Division 1 hockey. Trapp and Bealieau were both solid and hopefully come back.
Go Hounds.

Just like a majority of the AA games this year, really not that good. I saw more empty seats in the title game than I can ever remember. One thing that really irritated me about this game was DE player scored goal number 7 or so on a really nice pass and instead of celebrating with his teammates on the ice (especially the one who passed it to him) he sprints towards the bench, on one knee, does his celly while high-5'ing the kids on the bench. Way too much individual celly's lately and it really is getting annoying.
