I'm sure Marty is capable of speaking for himself, but I read it as saying 12 might be a little young to crown some youngsters as "high performance" and some youngsters as "not". I think if he'd have said MH, rather than USAH, it would be more meaningful. They abstained from USAH select 14's, but now have "select 13's or 12's"?
Exactly.... High Performance....for a 12-14..... Equals.... BS at it's finest....

They got me...hook, line and sinker...paid thousands over the years for my kid to get "exposure"...imagine how I felt when he joined his HS Varsity team and saw all of the same scouts all year at a dozen games or more.Marty McSorely wrote:I'm sure Marty is capable of speaking for himself, but I read it as saying 12 might be a little young to crown some youngsters as "high performance" and some youngsters as "not". Take this advice from a parent whose son did all of this...these programs are just for fun. Just a way for your player to gauge his ability against other good players--yes there is value in that-but you can find it elsewhere...cheaper.
If your kid is good enough, they will find him.

Are you saying this is a money grab?!?!? In Minnesota youth hockey?!?!?!

Great post though, nice and informative.

HP 14/15
I was at the HP 16's tryouts up in Blaine. About 80 kids, but I only saw 4 clip boards in the stands. If you are a goalie and want a bunch of rubber coming your way it's fun. Skaters spend most of the ice time in line waiting. Is this what the 14/15 will look like?

Nothing but mixed info.........
MNH is saying it's for all 00' borns
Some Districts are saying it's only for Bantam eligible 00's
Who do you comply with??
How could they possibly have it for only early 00' born kids? Are they trying to make things impossible for late born kids? They need to THINK about the huge advantages of making the team or even attending the tryouts this year..
Why wouldn't they just have the 99's this year and go with our Country's ONE year at a time system?
Just when I was starting to have a little faith in MNH....... Please tell me the Districts are wrong about this.

Bo,
Not sure where you are getting your confusing information, but below is from the Mn Hockey web site it states born in 1999-2000 maybe the word and should be between the 2 birth years. I do know there is at least 1 district that has sent out invitations to qualifying players.
High Performance 14/15
Reebok Minnesota Hockey High Performance 14/15 Program
The Reebok/MN Hockey High Performance 14/15 program is designed to provide players born in 1999-2000 the opportunity to train and compete against players of similar age. The process begins the summer of 2013 with tryouts at district sites. High Performance 14/15 players will train for 3 weeks the month of September and participate in the 14/15 Festival at Braemar Arena September 27th – 29th. Players who have participated at the Pee Wee A level and Bantam A or AA level are able to apply for tryouts with respective District GM. The 14/15 Program is part of Minnesota and USA Hockey Player Development Process and will be staffed by High School, College, Youth and USA Coaches.
If you have any questions regarding the tryout process or program content, etc, please feel free to contact me at the email contact provided. Please note, District tryout start soon and are posted on this page. Contact your District GM for additional information.

Many of the District sites say that it's only for bantam eligible players. And some do not. MNH site says....?
Many Hockey families have recieved emails from their Districts that only bantam eligible players are able to sign up.
Maybe you should make some calls so that you state and district guys are all on the same page...........

Bo,
Like the 15's in the spring most Districts have different qualifiers, this new program is no different in that respect. If you are really concerned contact the person in the District you are inquiring about.
If you are talking about D10 it is my understanding after a few conversations with a few involved the all 99 and 00 that were registered on "A" level teams last year are invited to try out.

I hope you're right, but either you, or a WHOLE BUNCH of other districts have it wrong.greybeard58 wrote:Bo,

People have received emails saying "only bantam eligible" from their districts.
Check the wording on their sites or call around... A whole buncha folks not on the same page.

If one District is different or they want only bantam eligible that is their call. For verification call the District person listed on the Mn Hockey site.
If District 3 is different than District 6 that is the call of District 3. Just because each District might have different criteria for being eligible for these camps, that remains the call of each individual District, they just need to be consistent within their District.
If you want to complain go to the Mn Hockey June meeting or attend your next District meeting.

As much as I hate to admit it, I have to agree with Bo.
15's, 16's, and 17's are all run by birth year; no district specifies that the only the 98's that will be sophomores next year are eligible to participate.
This doesn't seem fair to half of the 2000 kids; either include them all or don't include any of them.

I totally agree with Bo. This is unfortunate. How is this even possible?
But, remember, MN Hockey doesn't make any decisions. Decision are made by voting members. The voting members are the Districts plus some others. This is a bad example of the Districts doing what they want, because they're in charge, even though it's not the way MN Hockey envisioned the idea. Also remember how the A/AA split didn't go quite as MN Hockey had envisioned. Some Districts had their own ideas how to handle the change. There is no almighty MN Hockey czar that makes all the decisions. Get involved people. Think Globally, act locally. MN Hockey is run by it's members.

So MNH has their HP 15/16/17 system and the DISTRICT/sections(hsl probably thinks a little more) could vote that it's only for kids born in April......?
Are kids able try out in other districts that "allow" all 00' born kids..., like the older HP ages..?
MNH needs to clear this up on their site before a bunch of wrongly informed people go off of their info they provide. Time to make this right, MNH.

Exactly!! And I guess District 10 will allow all 00's to try out and District 6 will allow their younger 00's chances for future success in this program to drop way down. It just became a much harder road without being given the same experience opportunities.InigoMontoya wrote:So if D6 decided it wanted to allow checking in PW's, they'll just allow it for D6?MN Hockey is run by it's members.
My bet is that these (going against MNH) Districts have members involved that have kids at this level. Would only make sense.....
They need to all be on the same page for this to save face..

That I doubt, since with checking we're talking about an actual playing rule in the USA Hockey and MNH rulebooks, and a high-profile one at that. (There are divergences betwn USAH and MNH, obviously. But not on the checking rule as everyone knows.) Of course districts can and do supplement rules like the hour clock, time outs, and so forth. Even if one district had the chutzpah to implement checking at PW, it would make a mess of non-conference games, and I suspect they'd pay a hefty fine, and I doubt whether their district ref's would go along with it (refs are even more top-down than districts.)InigoMontoya wrote:So if D6 decided it wanted to allow checking in PW's, they'll just allow it for D6?MN Hockey is run by it's members.
This inconsistency is a stinker though, if it's real. Since the whole concept of Selects/HP is kind of a USA Hockey deal, MN hockey districts ought to stick to birth year rather than punish the younger late-calendar kids.
But the youngest HP groups that don't ladder up to national camps have long been controversial. As others have pointed out elsewhere, USA Hockey finally discontinued the 14s program just within the last year or so -- which Minnesota never bought into. And now they do! Weird!
I'm no math whiz, but I do know that even the oldest 00, born on January 1 2000, cannot possibly be aged 14 this year. So MNHockey needs to call this group 13s/14s/15s.

If District 3 is different than District 6 that is the call of District 3. Just because each District might have different criteria for being eligible for these camps, that remains the call of each individual District, they just need to be consistent within their District.
If you want to complain go to the Mn Hockey June meeting or attend your next District meeting.

I'm no math whiz, but I do know that even the oldest 00, born on January 1 2000, cannot possibly be aged 14 this year. So MNHockey needs to call this group 13s/14s/15s.[/quote]
I'm no math wiz either but the oldest 99, born on January 1 1999 won't be 15 this year.... so it is really the 12s/13s/14s.... Born December 31st 2000 will still be 12 when this program is all said and done... This group seems really broad. How well will a late birthdate 00 physically match up with an early birth date 99? Players going into second year of PW going into the corner with a kid going into second year of Bantam's???? These age groups do not play against each other until HS.... While don't disagree with Bo that their needs to be consistency with the program, I do wonder if MOST early 00's might be a litte above their head.

MNH created this two birth year group.

A good portion of the 00' Machine team have late 00' birthdates...
There are plenty of late born 00's that can hang way better than early born 00's. The froggy types are just trying to line their kiids up a year in advance. Big advantage going through twice
We all didn't plan our kids birth/c-section as well as you.....
