Of course parents have a big influence on their kids and they are a product of their environment for the most part. But it's ridiculous to say that a kid can't form his own opinion. I never mentioned one thing about half ice vs. full ice to my 7 year old last year, never even discussed it with him. Yet, he complained after every half ice game and asked why they don't play full ice all the time. That came from him alone.observer wrote:Funny you don't realize the "education" whether it be hotels, teams, tourneys, pucks, etc. has come from you. That's fine but please realize it's you doing the fussing and educating at the same time. Kids want to please parents and it sounds like your kid is no different than most. I think other posters are suggesting that without parental influences (that's you) your player wouldn't be as opinionated. We all do it to a degree but we also know you're extremely opinionated and that rubs off on kids. People are a product of the environment they live in and that is the environment your kid lives in.

observer, if you don't realize what a huge influence an older brother is on a younger brother than you have no basis for even forming the argument you just did. Within reason I try and raise my kids the same, the older boy is nothing like the younger boy in those regards. In this type of an instance I think it's tough to say the parnet has no influence but in this regard the older sibling is by far much more the influence. When my youngest was 2 years old he taught himself how to roller blade because "bubba rollerbaldes" (I will give you a hint, I am not bubba and I did not teach him how to rollerblade and I don't give a rats patooty about rollerblades), no one is "trying to please their parents" but there is someone trying very hard o "catch up" with their older brother. You must not have multiple sons, especially ones where there is 5+ years between them, if you did you'd see the phenomenon, it has very very litttle to do with the parentsobserver wrote:Funny you don't realize the "education" whether it be hotels, teams, tourneys, pucks, etc. has come from you. OTC sound slike you've seen it first hand. Observer is out of his element on this one IMHOO-townClown wrote:Your son is like mine in that regard. Most of the other kids have no idea about levels of play while my son could explain the level of play in various leagues to adults. He hangs out with the older kids at the rink and forms his opinions based on what teenagers are doing, not the other Squirts.JSR wrote:Again my 8 year old absolutely knows the difference and he doesn't have fun at any old hotel. Trust me, we've tried that with him, he isn't fooled.

[quoteLike I said it could be redwood falls or detroit.[/quote]
You have indeed said that many times. I don't think the rest of us understand why, but it is definitely making a small point for the other side of the debate. These people aren't going to drive their kids to Redwood Falls for hockey, certainly not during the summer, not even in the winter. Why not? It isn't because the hotels or restaurants in Redwood Falls, or Marshall, or Worthington, or Willmar aren't just as hospitable as those in Hermantown, or Thief River Falls, or Warroad. Set up the very best tour of Hormel and gigantic trophies and the Austin tourney will still not fill with squirt teams from Maple Grove, Centenial, Prior Lake, Farmington. It isn't because you don't have nice people in SW MN, it's because you don't have good hockey.
