A new approach to summer hockey

Post by frederick61 »

Just posted a story about the Northland Hockey Group and their approach to summer hockey. It can be read at:

Their approach to summer hockey provides a different option for parents and kids who want to play summer hockey and other sports.

I think that the Minnesota Wave program in the South Metro has a similar concept. They encourage participation in other sports and the majority of their scheduling is done to not conflict with other sports as much as possible.

The concept really is a top notch concept. Because the same organization "owns" all the teams they will always have a full tournament. Because of how they structure the teams their games really are competitive. Also, while it is true none of the teams are "top notch" teams there are some "top notch" individual talents sprinkled amongst the teams. Honestly, it is very very much like winter small assciation hockey in that you get alot of "diversity" in talent level on each team. One team had two kids who could legitimately play on most "top notch" teams surrounded by a bunch of kids who are probably barely B2 or C players on most decent sized assoications but what is cool is all the players are there because they jsut love playing hockey and aren't really concerned with the "caliber" of their teammates, sort of like how it used to be in neighborhood and assoication hockey. Not saying it is the best model or that everyone should be doing it but it is a great model to be used in addition to the others out there and frankly it's a brilliant business model especially when you look at the majority of the areas the group is serving. Top notch idea for sure

Just posted the stories on Sunday's championship games and the Northland tourney. In all there were 12 championship games played and most of the kids were excited to be in the championship games. The post can be read at

It was fun to watch the kids participate in this tourney, they really played their best and enjoyed the game win or lose.
