I think the point that was plenty of good players aren't high picks or don't even get drafted at all. And plenty (actually, the majority) of draft picks never see the NHL.

Also, you don't think the Vezina winner, the runner up, the NHL leading scorer, or the D-man who ran Canada's power play during their 2010 gold medal run would attract any interest from GM's?

Speaking of Guentzel. My Hill Murray heart breaks thinking of what could have been had not Guentzel (3rd Rd) and Blake Heinrich (5th Rd) left for the USHL for their Sr years. State tourney runner-up? I don't think so. Imagine the that sweet 1st line from 2012 still intact (Jr) Guentzel - (Jr) Lavalle - (So) Brown with (Jr) Heinrich breaking the puck out of the zone and floating on the line like he did.. Add Slattery in there somewhere, like taking Charlie Sampair's role and I think the boys could have taken the big one home.. Is Hill the only team recently to have two top 5 round picks from the same class & have them both leave for Sr year besides.

The bigger point is that the days of the dynasty are largely gone unless you have incredible balance because the cream will be sifted off by the USHL or the U18 development camp etc. It really does change the dynamics for those of us who love MN High School hockey above all other forms.

The draft does provide a little relief in the middle of the summer blues and the Elite League is coming up in a couple of months but anybody taiking about the 2013-14 season yet. Top 5 teams? Are Hurley and Mahlmquist sticking around?

Speaking of Hill Murray, anybody know much about this 6'2" Soph (to be) Goalie as a replacement for Dugas. I see he was one of only 3 MN HS (active) G's to be drafted by the USHL (along with Ahrenz and Driscoll) - so that says a lot.. I guess he was originally from Hudson.

Am I reading this correctly that a private school backer is complaining about kids leaving leaving school early. Wondering all the what it's, huh?

Next thing they'll do is complain about kids they couldn't get and start wondering what if...

To the first point--they're probably the first team in recent memory to have two draft picks leave in the same year, though I'm guessing Holy Angels had a year or two like that in the early 00s, and plenty of teams recently have had more than one draft pick. (2011 Edina and EP and Holy Angels if you count early departures, 2010 Minnetonka, Edina and maybe more in 2009...) Having multiple draft picks is no guarantee of a title, though obviously it would have helped Hill's odds last season.

As for there not being any more dynasties, I'm not at all convinced. At the section level, we've had a bunch recently: Edina, Hill, East, Moorhead, Blaine going back a couple of years. They're all deep teams that were well-positioned to weather early departures, which all of them suffered. At the state championship level dynasties may be more rare than they used to be, but one (Holy Angels, 02-05) did it by getting a lot out of a bunch of young players who went on to leave early. It can be done. And Edina had the talent to build a dynasty in the late 00s, but they didn't deliver. Looking at their youth program, they might be on the verge of another run, too. There's more turnover now than there was in the days of, say, the Jefferson dynasty, but teams can still go on a run if they have enough good players feeding in.

Hard to do much in the way of preseason rankings when we're still waiting to see who stays and who goes and who transfers. I won't be bothering with that for a while yet.

I imagine Tonka would have done much better had Lettieri stayed and I am sure there are other schools that could say the same thing. Tonka lost another star for this season, but you can't dwell on it...

What ever happened to Prior? I know he verbally committed to the Badgers early then left HM. Never heard about him after that.

Although they left after before Junior season Benilde lost Collins and Glover whom have decent chance to be drafted in top 5 rounds next year.
