May look like a huge get now, but rarely does a goalie transition well from high school to college without Junior play. I assume he will follow that path, but goalies generally peak as they get older, has he peaked early? We've all seen it many times before...verbal commitment at 15 means little...

Why would you suggest he wouldn't play juniors? My guess is he does!

So your opinion doesn't mean much either

You're right, my opinion really doesn't matter, but I guess no one else's does either then. My point is, he's a long way from college play and a lot can happen...hard to understand a goalie commitment at 15. Not saying he isn't talented...we'll see.

Beginning to wonder about some of Don's picks. He and Lindgren only played bantams last year. He hasn't even proved himself in high school against 95's, 96's, and 97's. I have always been a gopher fan but I guess I will get on the badger bandwagon, at least their recruits are proven at a high school level.

Maybe it's just a case of Don beating Eaves to the punch? Maybe these kids have so much obvious promise, most D1 coaches would also love to be able to have them commit now, even though they're very young by historical standards? If that does indeed prove to be the case, and they end up helping the Gophers become the dominant team most fans here hope, will you then jump back on the Gopher bandwagon? ;)

Haha....Badgers just picked up a commitment from a 1997 birth year goaltender. One year older than Edquist. One year! The other goaltender in their pipeline they have had to push back a few times because he isn't developing as expected.

Lindgren has been labeled by more than a few people as a generational talent. Kids like he, Gersich, and Joey Anderson are heavily sought after and tend to get offers earlier. Kudos to Don for getting a commitment from a kid who will likely have a big impact.

Have fun dressing like a popcorn box and emersing yourself in a fan base that generally doesn't understand the game. Sounds like you'll fit right in!

Frazee committed at 15, that one worked out well.

Maybe this kid is good at letting in the 180 footer also.

I never said I had a problem with a 97 birth year. In fact I stated earlier two recruits for Wisconsin who will make an impact are in fact 97 birth years. This badger recruit is turning 17 and playing for Ann Arbor. I have a problem with 98 birth years who played bantam hockey and have not proven themselves at a higher level. I'm not saying they are not talented but my opinion is they haven't proven themselves worthy of a verbal commitment yet at their age. Joey Anderson did play at a higher level as an 8th grader as well as Gersich did.

Also, I will eat my words if I see those two playing Shattuck prep vs U16 and making a impact this year.

I have nothing against these two, hope they do well. My opinion is only questioning Lucia's early recruits.

Player System Rating Rules

Traditional Realistic Potential Rating (1-10)
(a player's realistic potential ability):

10. Generational Talent - a player for the ages, one who can do things with a puck that no other player would even contemplate doing. Very, very few players will be deserving of this rating, probably one per decade.

Defense: Bobby Orr
Forward: Wayne Gretzky
Goaltender: Patrick Roy

You really think Lindgren is a "generational talent"?? Whose the popcorn box now who doesn't know the game? I can't believe you just compared a bantam player to a generational talent, just maybe if you were talking about Connor McDavid you would have an argument.

You do realize that many of UW's current recruits (Linehart, Malone, Tischke, Berkovitz, Kunin, etc) committed at a time when they hadn't played anything above the U16 level, right?

Given Shattuck is arguably the top prep team in the country on a consistent basis, you are going to hold it against Lindgren and Edquist if they don't make it on that team next year and only play U16... yet you praise UW's recruiting when it has mainly been built around picking up commitments from kids that were at the U16 level when they made their decision? LOL. Nice logic.

Shattuck prep had two sophmores on their team last season so I don't see why it isn't a possibility this year for them to make it, especially if one is considered a "generational talent" by many. Wisconsin's three MN picks all played high school hockey which is equivalent to Shattuck prep, in fact Benilde and STA beat Shattuck prep.

Isn't U16 still higher level than bantams? Right?

The point is you praise UW for its decisions on kids despite the fact many hadn't played above U16 at the time they committed. Yet you act like somehow it is a sign of weakness if these two Gopher commits only play U16 at Shattuck next year. If only playing U16 next year is somehow a bad sign, then you would have to say the same thing for the bulk of UW's current commits because that is the level many of them were playing at the same stage.

My point exactly. The bulk of the UW kids committed when they played at least at the U16 level. These two have not played at the U16 level yet, they were recruited earlier than most so therefore they should be even more talented than the bulk of the other players. Shattuck prep had two sophmores last year on team, one committed to the Gophers as a sophomore, Norman.

Avery Peterson to UNO, another great miss by Lucia.

I'll give you a few recent examples where you are shortsighted on whether these guys should be playing prep or U16.

Taylor Cammarata just walked away with the USHL scoring title last year. Close to 100 points scored. Guess what team he played on in 10th grade? Shattuck U16.

Same with Ian McCoshen (a top D recruit for BC and was one pick away from being a 1st rounder in the last NHL draft).

This year's #1 overall NHL draft pick... Nathan MacKinnon. Guess what team he played on as a 10th grader? Yep... Shattuck's U16 team.

Jordan Greenway is a top recruit right now that will playing for the NTDP this upcoming season. As a 10th grader? He played on Shattuck's U16 team.

The reality of the matter is many elite level kids played on Shattuck's U16 team as 10th graders.

If your logic is somehow these kids aren't as good because they don't make the prep team as a 10th grader, I suggest you think again as the above names are just a few examples of where that is laughably wrong. Obviously it is a year to year thing based on what the prep team has for talent. But it is hardly uncommon for great prospects to play on the U16 team at Shattuck as 10th graders.

Lindgren is arguably the best defenseman in the country among the 1998s. If not the best, certainly among the top two or three. I certainly don't want to recruit too many 15 year olds. But it is justified in his case. He could easily be playing Class AA HS hockey. But you can't fault a kid for wanting to attend a place with the track record for players that Shattuck has put together over the years.

I will admit I am a little cautious on Edquist since many great goalies tend to develop later. But he is a top prospect at that position for his age so I'll just have to trust their judgment.

As for Peterson... the Gophers have 16 forwards on their roster this year and only two of them are seniors. They don't have the need at forward for 2014 when Peterson is entering college. I'm not sure how that can be deemed a miss given the roster needs aren't there in the 1st place. But you seem to have pretty faulty logic as it is so I shouldn't be shocked by that thinking.

Lazy scout would be the same person that thinks the gophers should get EVERY Minnesotan that is good. So maybe the gophers should go to a 50 man roster. Just have 12 skaters per class and we'll rotate through so they all get a chance to play.

You are ripping the gophers and you are admitting you are a badger fan. When was the last time they were good? People think Lucia should be fired...how has eaves kept his job? Arguably just as good recruiting classes.
