Elite League all-star team White and Red for CCM IIT
Cant wait to see Elite League all-star teams vs some of the best U18 competition in North America at the CCM NIT. Along with Elite all-star teams (white and red) you also have SSM (last year's winner), the Mass. All-star team along with MI U18, Norwood School (NY), Edge Scool (Calgary), & Hill Academy (greater Toronto).. Edge and Hill replace teams from Germany and Norway that participated last year.. This ranks up there or at least a close 2nd to state tourney for me....
Suprising thing about Elite All-star team Red which is usually northern MN kids with a smattering of Metro kids along with ND & WI, is that it does have a G and a few D from up north but only forwards are Hammer (Cathedral) and Bethune (Warroad). No Duluth area forwards, no Moorhead, Bemidji or Roseau (Yon or Strand). Very strange year in that respect. Hats off to WI as they placed a lot if kids led deservedly by Graaskamp.
As for Metro suprises, Fidler definitely played his way on during playoffs (7pts in 3 games) as he only had 10pts during reg season while biggest surprises not making active roster are Jake Wahlin (21pts but only 5pts in last 10 games) and Zach Hale (Alt) also with (21pts) during regular season. But points arent everything I'm learning more and more. Another team Red northern F had 8pts in 18 reg season games so go figure..Although team Great Plains was an anomaly as no one scored more than 15pts which is two less than lowest scorer on Team White (that played full season - Boeser made it with 14pts in 14 games).. So Hammer and Bethune, the 2 northern forwards who made it had 11 and 8 pts in 14 and 18 games respectivvely..
See full White and Red rosters below. White plays MA All-stars at 5:45pm Friday in New Hope while Red plays Edge at 5:15pm on other rink..Best hockey around here in a long time and I can't wait to see White forwards fly against team MA.. Blaine & Hill each have 3 F's on White so it will be interesting if they run them as lines. Edina also has 3 F but split between White and Red. Burnsville likely would have had 3 as well but Sheehy bolted in last week. No favoritism here though just great Hockey with a 3 game gaurantee and more scouts then the Cub, Boy, & eagle's combined....

correction

You are correct, Snugs reminds me a lot of Teemu so I botched that and put Burnsville. Thank you for pointing that out..I also somehow forgot to include SSM who won it all last year. They had been calling it a NIT tourney (sponsored by Bauer) but since there have always been teams from outside the U.S., they correctly changed it to IIT as well (sponsored by CCM this year)...

Re: correction
Well, if they're trying to dot the i's and cross the t's via event names, might also be best to call the team's "Upper Midwest Red & White", eh ?bsubeaver94 wrote:D6Rocks wrote:Isn't Snuggerud from EP??

Could be, but don't know. Maybe that explains the presence of some juniors on the teams ?Nobodyonya wrote:That is strange Yon or Strand are not listed...presumably maybe they elected not to be rostered? Another surprise to me is Tomberlin?? I consider him one of the top forwards in the NW Suburban Conference

Yon, Strand, Tomberlin & team name
To the dot the I's and cross your t's guy, the team names in on the official bracket are MNRed and MNWite even though they have sone ND and WI players on Red.
As far as those making or missing cut, players were told last year that seniors get the nod so I assume it was the same this year... Also, if you look at points, the selections stick pretty close to those for F selections. Which is why Yon with 10pts and Strand with 9pt, nor Tomberlin with 14 made the cut. And playoff performance definitely made the difference for some like Fidler (Edina) who only had 9pts in reg. season but 7 in 3 playoff games leading to championnship..Not sure what led to Bethume making it when generally the point cutoff was around 17 (for those playing the full 21 games) which is right where Cole Borchardt was, who was lowest scoring F on team White...As far as Wahlin (who is not listed as an Alternate either) he only had a few more points (21) then several other Sr's who made it, played poorly down the stretch, plus, since this is an exposure thing, I think the fact that he already has a ride may have been factored in (right or wrong). Also, Sr. Zach Hale only made it as an Alternate with 21 points..
Im not positive but I think the better a team does, the more likely they are to get an extra selection or two as well. So SE as reg season champs and SW as playoff champs may have been given an extra selection... Plus I think they look at who you played with as well. If you were with Novak and Sheehy or Wahlin and Slattery (just examples), they probably expect a few more points out of you than if you were like one 50 point scorer from North Metro who got stuck on 4th line for most part and saw little if any power play action etc.. So the scouts obviously had a 21 game season (plus playoffs) to evaluate these kids while weighing a number of factors. I think they did pretty good job overall...

Re: Yon, Strand, Tomberlin & team name
Sorry for repeating the obvious. However at first I thought maybe they did just have White and Red so I went back and checked and was kind of surprised that it was "Mn". Also kind of surprised that all non-MN's were put on team Red. I think that speaks to weakness of northern MN offensive talent in the league this year..Highest scorer for GP had 15pts while top 3 scorers for Team N were all metro kids (Roo, Jenson & Valerius) while Cole Smith from Brainerd was 4th with 14pts..Tanner Tweeten the very highly touted F' from EGF (6'2" 198lbs) only had 12 pts in 21 games......Very, very strange year in the northland..puckbreath wrote:I'm aware of that obviously; hence my post.bsubeaver94 wrote:To the dot the I's and cross your t's guy, the team names in on the official bracket are MNRed and MNWite even though they have sone ND and WI players on Red.

Re: Yon, Strand, Tomberlin & team name
That's how the rosters have always been separated for this event. The White team is the "Twin Cities Metro" team, and the Red team is the "Outstate/ND/WI" team. The difference this year is more that the ratio was so lopsided for metro kids that they had to put some on the Red team.bsubeaver94 wrote: Also kind of surprised that all non-MN's were put on team Red.

That's what happens when all these EGF players, Hermantown, Cloquet and Grand Rapids players get placed on the North Team with NO TRYOUT. EGF players on the North Team because their coach is coaching the GP team. That GP team was really weakened and the North team had players that should have been there that weren't because of all the behind the scenes stuff going on. Plenty of North Kids that tried out that should have made this team.
BSu, If you want to throw stones at the "weakness" of the North and GP offensive talert, be aware the talent that left those teams early--Poganski, Kuhlman, Herdt, Michaud, Sauer to name a few. Be glad they are gone... it may have helped your son make the team. Also, a nice touch by calling out individual kids for "not playing well down the stretch" or being "highly touted" and not getting a ton of points...bsubeaver94

But points arent everything I'm learning more and more.
Good callout Sk8 Str8....12 point for a Soph in Elite League play is really good. Checked the roster and he is one of 10-11 underclassman on team north. Another year of getting bigger (6'2" 198 lbs... as if he needs anymore size
! ) and stronger and look out. You can also add Peterson, Pionk, and Beaulieu to the list of kids that could have returned to play in the Elite League this year.
