This probably needs its own thread, but...
While I've got nothing against this player individually or any other who chooses this approach, does the notion that a kid only needs to attend the school they play for from mid-Nov. to mid-Mar. in order to participate rub anyone else the wrong way? Just doesn't seem to uphold the spirit of HS athletics and also allows for parents/coaches to abuse it by having kids be part-time students at the school just to play a sport (assuming they could afford it).
Perhaps I'm on an island on this one...

No, Simpleton your not alone. I'm guessing there should be rules about attending school part time. Realistically he's not eligible. He is taking classes or at least working towards his HS degree somewhere else like home schooling he should only be allowed to play where that is taking place. If he is not working towards his HS degree then he is ineligible because he is not carrying a GPA good enough to play. I'm not an expert but that's what would make sense to me. Nothing bad on Avery he is a heck of a player its the high school that needs to re-think this. Who else would they let play that are not fulfilling their academic obligations.
I have no personal knowledge of this particular situation. My guess is that in cases such as this, they home school or stay enrolled at their high school and complete their work online. If home schooling, it appears that it is state law in MN that they have access to public school sports. So it wouldn't be entirely up to the school to decide. You bring up some interesting points, though.sticksave wrote:No, Simpleton your not alone. I'm guessing there should be rules about attending school part time. Realistically he's not eligible. Boy, If you can choose where ever you want to play regardless of where you home school that would sure open up a can of worms. I can see many taking advantage of that. If you're playing juniors living in another area and schooling there whether its formal or informal schooling you should be subject to all of the transfer rules that regular athletes/students must follow. My self I think the transfer rules might not be needed but where they are in place then everyone should follow them.

SimplyPut, Not quite sure what lead you to establish the context of your question at Avery Peterson being in school at Rapids on Monday, versus any other date. But, the answer is that he IS attending GRHS and has been at and in school for some time. He IS on the team.

I was under the impression that he was playing JR's somewhere, and with the talk on this forum there seems to be some question for awhile if he was coming back to high school or staying at JR's. So don't get your undies in a bundle, it was nothing more then question of curiousity since i watch quite a bit of section 7AA games so I have seen him play in the past. I for one appriciate the kids that stay with their high school teams. sorry if the original question seemed offensive.

No worries. I have been tracking all the comments about whether AP was returning or not, but wasn't sure if you saw something in all that to make a specific reference to Monday. At any rate, it appears we have our answer and can wait to see how the season plays out.
GR seems to have a pretty good track record with their top players returning for the senior season. Hopefully, that will continue to be the case two years from now.

Overall it was pretty even. At the end Bemidji had more than enough time to put it away; pp the last 6min and OT, a lot of that 5-3. Rapids pk stood tall and players stepped up when they had to. The team that worked harder got the win.MNhockey29 wrote:You forgot about Elk River bud and sounds like Bemidji should have beat Rapids? Trying to figure out favorites after one week is the same as trying to figure them out in May. No doubt the GR/FL game on Sat. will have big 7AA implications. I won't be shocked if FL wins this game, but I still think GR will go farther in the playoffs no matter Saturday's outcome. There is a lot of youth on that GR lineup that will make mistakes now but hopefully get better as the year goes on and be able to compliment the Peterson/Bischoff duo along with Hunter Sheperd. Forest Lake is a very experienced team with decent goaltending. For Rapids to win the big 3 for GR I just mentioned will have to have monster games.

I think the only teams that will be in it at the end of the year is Elk River, DE, and Forest Lake. I don't think GR has enough to make it through playoffs especially with a new coach. Still think East is the favorite until someone proves them different, but Elk River And Flake will be their biggest challenges in 7AA. Wouldn't be surprised to see elk river or Flake at the Excel come march.
