Considering the returning talent and their years of experience under their coaches' systems, Wayzata is deservedly ranked #1. Having said that, Maple Grove has a ton of returning firepower offensively, defensively, and between the pipes. Put that together with an aggressive new coaching staff ... EARLY UPSET IN THE MAKING ???

The Trojans got the win; their top players scored some big goals, and they're certainly deep. Still, they were a bit rough around the edges, with some young players still getting their feet wet out there. They didn't quite have the crispness you expect out of an elite team in the offensive zone, either. It's early though. We'll see how they handle the #1 tag in a big tilt against Edina tomorrow.

Credit Maple Grove for playing physical, capitalizing on their chances, and some great goaltending by Cal McKenney. There were some shaky moments in the opening period, but they really settled in as the game went along. They'll give some good teams fits this year.

Also, after mumbling about the webcast last night, I'll give credit tonight: that northwest suburban public access channel did a very nice job. Good commentary and camera work, and no problems with the feed. Good game, good atmosphere, and a much more interesting game than Minnesota-UMD.

Yeah I saw that in the box score, That definitely is encouraging same goes for Munson and Fidler with 5 and 4 points.

Great action in the 3rd place game. Maple Grove went up 3-1 early in the 3rd and seemed ready to cruise, but Holy Family cut it to one late, and then tied it with the extra attacker on with 23 seconds to go. Not to be outdone, Maple Grove won it on a goal by Valerius with 2.3 seconds left.

Yet another great game at the start of the season. Time for the Edina-Wayzata clash...

The shots on goal may have been close, but the game wasn't. Edina hasn't missed a beat since March. Wayzata's lone goal was a bleeder, and they had very, very few chances down the stretch.

Edina played such a complete game tonight. They rolled 4 lines and 3 D pairs, were strong in transition, and Rohkol was strong in goal. In the 3rd period they went into shutdown mode, forechecking the Trojans to death, just as they did to everyone in sections and State last season. Wait and Bellows have jumped in seamlessly. If I had to find a critique, it would be their chippiness, but otherwise...not much.

For the Trojans, well, it's still early, and they'll be crisper as the season goes along. They were in a tough spot in the 3rd, especially since they're not an explosive offensive team. They weren't bad defensively, but against Edina, just a few little mistakes can do you in.

Edina looked dominant. The fact theta they look this good, this early, could be scary for the rest of the state. As for Wayzata, looked like the same team the Trojans always have. Solid team that will keep every game close, but won't win the high scoring games. Not enough offensive power besides their top line. However, they are very good at playing their system and because of this will obviously remain a top team in the state.

Wayzata was certainly physical, yes, but a handful of Edina players seemed to take it a step further than anyone on Wayzata. I won't name names, but I thought the Hornets were very lucky to not have more people parked in the box after the first scrum. Edina has a few players who play with a bit of an edge.

That can be a good thing at times, but if we're looking for ways that a team might beat them, it could definitely involve getting under their skin and forcing a few penalties and using a good power play to build a lead.
