Grand Rapids was lucky to win this game and they can thank Bemidji's lack of a power play tonight especially at the end when they had 2:50 of 5 on 3 and could only get one and give up two shorty's.puckbreath wrote:No.elliott70 wrote:Do the Jacks have a chance tonight against the Ind, er, Thunderhawks?
On a side note is it me or do the refs call just about everything in High School Hockey these days?

Lucky, sounds like the refs were more than a bit biased, it felt like Rapids was on the PK the entire night. They tied it on the PK and won it in OT on the PK. That's not luck, that is talent and guts. Rapids started slow in the 1st and Bemidji had already played a game. The A. Peterson - J. Bischoff combo is gonna be one of the best forward duos in the state. Forest Lake at home is going to be a big test for Rapids. Good luck to Bemidji in 8AA.

Junior Varsity
Another thing that baked my noodle is Grand Rapids had 9 players on the junior varsity squad. I realize times change but in 1995 when I played, they cut at least a dozen players from the junior gold team meaning we had three full rosters and now they can't even field a full varsity and J.V. squad. Times a changing.

You make your own luck. Kudos to GR for grinding out the SH goals and making the most out of their opportunities.Mnsportsguy1976 wrote:Grand Rapids was lucky to win this game and they can thank Bemidji's lack of a power play tonight especially at the end when they had 2:50 of 5 on 3 and could only get one and give up two shorty's.puckbreath wrote:No.elliott70 wrote:Do the Jacks have a chance tonight against the Ind, er, Thunderhawks?

You are right about the numbers being down. Rapids is almost as much a BB school as it is a hockey school. The numbers coming up are not growing either. It's a shame.Mnsportsguy1976 wrote:Another thing that baked my noodle is Grand Rapids had 9 players on the junior varsity squad. Hockey is too expensive. Too many broken families around country that just don't care. The few that still play are entitled to play Varsity or quit. Kids played sports in 1995 because mom and dad didn't feed them monster drinks and cheetos and 16 hours of video games, dads made the boys work and kids expected and could deal with setbacks.Mnsportsguy1976 wrote:Another thing that baked my noodle is Grand Rapids had 9 players on the junior varsity squad. GR took a lot of penalties, too many. Most were lack of discipline from inexperienced players but a couple were bad calls. There was finally a good hit and he got tagged with a major: contact to the head, shortly after GR already took a major for hit from behind. The hit from behind call may have been justified but it looked like the player turned his back at the last second. And this is with 6min left in a tie game.
Enough about the refs...Bemidji had more than enough opportunities to put it away but GR held tough being short handed, good resilience and discipline. You can tell they are a young team and are still feeling things out. Avery's ripper to tie it at 2 was a beauty tic-tac-toe play. He really picked it up a notch in the 3rd and OT and was rightfully rewarded with the tying goal and assisting on the winner that Jonah 5 holed. Kind of a flat game until the 3rd when the action really picked up. Looking forward to seeing a more energetic Rapids team against Flake this Sat.

Thunderhawk Fanatic!!
I have seen rapids play many times through out the years. They do have a tendency to be a rough team. They do historically take alot of penalties, and a lot of dumb penalties at that. I know its hurt them in the past. their next few opponents seem to have pretty solid power play units so they better play with more discipline or they may be on the losing side of things.
