Yes it looks like Elk River, Duluth East, and Grand Rapids will be fighting for the top 3 seeds, however, Forest Lake will be a tough test for any of them in the playoffs. Cloquet looks like they are gonna struggle, still I wouldn't want to draw them in the quarterfinals any year. STMA is improved, but I don't see them contending for a playoff win this year. Andover beat Hopkins 7-3, I see them as a middle of the pack team, but very early on them. In the next 10 days Elk River will play Andover and Duluth East. This should give a good barometer on these clubs.

I was at the GR and FL game and didn't think Peterson was overly impressive buy obviously very good. Gravelle for Forest Lake stood out and had many scoring chances but couldn't quite finish. Overall, Forest Lake will cause trouble in the section come playoff time and wouldn't be surprised to see them at the excel.

Not enough games yet to really say who is 1-6 in this section, but a week from Saturday Grand Rapids plays Elk River, East plays Andover, and Forest Lake goes to Cloquet. One thing I will say is the gap between 1 and 6 is a lot narrower than I thought before the season. Forest Lake very competitive, but they just seem like the type of team that lacks that one big time player that will hurt them in this section. Andover is way better than I thought and Tyler Tomberlin sounds like he's the Mr. Hockey candidate that Pete Waggoner said he is. East and Andover both lost to ER by one and now Cloquet jumps in the mix with a hard fought 1 goal loss to East. Rapids in undefeated against some very good teams but their big test is in Edina next week. 7AA has been competitive for many years, but this season looks like one of the best in recent memory in terms of not just how many teams are in the mix, but how highly ranked these teams will be throughout the year. I'm very curious to see if the results will bring a clear picture of the seeds as we go along, or if there will be a lot of team A beat team B, team B beat team C, team C beat team A sort of mess.

Well, even though it's early, GR doesn't seem like it can keep up with top teams. They have another chance tomorrow to prove themselves, but I don't think they are gonna win unless Shepard stands on his head. Still could maybe do some damage in sections this year. They do have a guy named Avery Peterson....Time will tell.
DE could've "easily" won state the last 5 years.

Not concerned about the results vs Edina and Eden Prairie at this point in the year with a young team. Even when GR had Patrick White and Joe Stejskal they never did well at the Edina Classic. Rapids has been in that tourney for 10 years and beat Edina only once, never beat Eden Prairie and 5-3-1 (I think) vs Elk River. Nonetheless, John Rothstien, Aaron Miskovich, and Grant Clafton will have them playing their best hockey in February.Slammer wrote:Well, even though it's early, GR doesn't seem like it can keep up with top teams. I'm concerned about Rapids competing. It's one thing to lose to Edina and Eden Prairie but to be totally dominated is something else. At this point it looks like Elk River and Duluth East are the only teams from Section 7 that can compete with the metro teams. I see Rapids splitting with Cloquet and losing to Elk River, East and Andover. Hope they can turn it around, but it doesn't look good at this point. The section seems down this year. Rapids, Cloquet, East, Andover and St. Francis had better teams last year. Forest Lake is about the same. East will be a contender but I don't see Rapids getting to that level. Maybe Rapids can prove me wrong.

East- 3 Andover- 1
Good solid game by East. Phil Beaulieu had an excellent game, had two unassisted goals and they were some of his best goals I've seen. Such an underrated player. Trapp also had a great game, breaking up a lot of potential opportunities for Andover.
East seems to be getting better, and I suspect that they will start to get it rolling now.

Awesome result after all the trash talk from below average hockey observers. Grand Rapids 3, Elk River 2. Rapids with a PP goal and Elk River deserved that penalty big time, one of the worst checking from behind penalties you will see at any level. So with this win Grand Rapids controls their own destiny to get the #1 seed. Lots of hockey left and a huge game now in January when Duluth East travels to GR. I know it's early, but after todays results:
1. Grand Rapids
2. Elk River
3. Duluth East
4. Forest Lake
5. Andover
6. Cloquet

Don't get too excited...... I wouldn't want you guys to get let down at the end of February.... Cause I know you haven't experienced that feeling in the last five years.TheHockeyDJ wrote:Awesome result after all the trash talk from below average hockey observers. Grand Rapids 3, Elk River 2. Well looks like Shepard played an amazing game, so thank you! I guess I did call it.north_bear wrote:Good call.Slammer wrote:Well, even though it's early, GR doesn't seem like it can keep up with top teams. I'm not getting too excited or making predictions, just stating how things stand RIGHT NOW in 7AA. Plus the fact that you went out of your way to make some angry remarks about Grand Rapids in your predictions, and well, you are eating a big fat plate of crow tonight. I'm not the only one enjoying that.Slammer wrote:Don't get too excited...... I wouldn't want you guys to get let down at the end of February....
