Not a Minnesota HS team but how would you like to play for the "Benson Bunnies"? I think that might be even worse than "Spuds" <a href="http://www.ops.org/benson/shirts.htm" target="top">Benson Bunnies T-shirts</a>Benson Bunnies (Omaha, Nebraska) -- After a loss on Benson's hole-filled football field in the 1920s, a rival coach groused, "We didn't come to play Benson, we came to play the bunnies."

Okay... I have to weigh in on this one. The Moorhead Spuds has become a familiar, respected name. But to name a team after a vegatable? Give me a break!! Don't get me wrong.... Moorhead is my team ... but to name these guys after a herbaceous plant that is eaten whole or in part, raw or cooked, generally with an entree or in a salad but not as a dessert? Like I said... "give me a break!" You might as well call the Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars, the "Bloomington Jefferson Junipers" ... or better yet.... the Sauk Rapids Soy beans. Or maybe even better yet.... Crookston 'Carrots' What a joke. What school board in their right mind would allow such a moniker to exist within the confines of a school district? The Fergus Falls "Otters" have always made sense since there were many of those playful mammals in the Otter Tail River in the heyday of yesteryear. I like the Otters. The Hilltoppers from Duluth is also a name I've always liked. When I was a kid... we used to play "king of the hill" on large snowbanks that were created by city plows on various intersections throughout the city. The Hilltoppers name connotates that very notion: "king of the hill". I like unique names, named after inanimate objects like the East Grand Forks 'Greenwave' .... of the Crookston Cathedral 'Blue wave'. Why not name a team... The Crosby-Ironton-Aitkin 'Grizzlies'? or ... the Sioux City Serial Killers? or ... the Thief River Falls 'Thieves'? or ... the Roseau 'Racists'? or ... the Hallock 'Honkies'? or ... the Brainerd 'Boneheads'? I like the 'Rockets', or even the 'Jets', or something along those lines for a hockey team and I'm sure if the 'Spuds' changed to one of those they would bring home a title. But I fear as long as they stick with the 'Spuds' they are cursed to fall short. The great sport of hockey was just not designed to allow a team that is cursed ( <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /devil.gif ALT=":evil"> )with a name like the 'Spuds' to wear its crown. I'm sure the g<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/sick.gif ALT=":x"> y that came up with the name for Moorhead High did so at a time when Hockey was not on the school program. Probably a football guy or maybe a baseball guy. My bloodline was very much directly involved with putting the 'Spuds' on the Minnesota Hockey map and if they had been called the Moorhead 'Rockets' at the time, it would have fit the style of the team in his day and would have undoubtedly struck fear into the Jefferson 'Jaguars' that the Jags might have still been trembling from to this day. The 'Rockets' or 'Jets' or even 'Bombers' would be names that are better suited to Hockey teams than Basketball or Football or Roller Derby Teams in my humble opinion. Remember 'Rocket' Richard? Of course a slight paradigm shift <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> and a one letter change and a team might add a little more female 'fan' <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... tongue.gif ALT=":p"> appeal to the game of hockey. The 'Studs' may fit the team a little better,especially with a city name to go along with it such as Moorhead. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> I must say that the 'Blossoms' would be better suited to a female 'squirts' league than to a high school boys hockey team, but I would be willing to wager that even the girls would object to a 'marshmellow' name like that if given the choice to name their own hockey team. Just the same, my vote would still remain with the 'Rockets' for Moorhead. Any politically correct names...Storm (Sauk Rapids), Blaze, Stars...and any team name that is changes due to politacal pressure. In North Dakota GF Central was forced to change their long-time traditional name of the Redskins to the "Maroon and Silver" What??? now their the Knights. Well to all that cares, They'll always be known as the Skins!

This isn't a comment on the PC of Native American nicknames, but rather one that I have always found to be incredibly ironic. Henry Sibley's nickname is the "Warriors". For those of you who don't know, Henry Sibley was a military leader who was appointed to suppress the Dakota Indian uprising in 1862. Though he himself was not an "Indian Hater" and actually pushed for more humane treatment of Indians, he did approve of and willingly enforce the hanging of many Dakota who had participated in the uprising. I always just thought if there was a worse choice of a school than Henry Sibley to have a such a nickname, I'd be interested to see it.

What's wrong with Blossoms? I lived their for awhile. The "Awesome Blossoms" were a force to be reckoned with. They had an attitude. (You would too if you had to live with that nickname). I never could figure out why, with a name like the Blossoms, the colors were black and white. How about the sauk centre "Mainstreeters" Elgin-Millville "Watchmen" Jordan "Hubmen" (boys only, girls go by Jaguars). Personally, I like Scarlets and Greyhounds. They sound classy, and are not common. Better than the all-too-common Tigers and Cardinals. I didn't like Sabers at first for Shakopee, because they spelled it that way, with a Saber-tooth tiger as teh mascot, but it's OK. I'd prefer the Sabre (as on buffalo or Sartell) though

hockeydad wittingly or unwittingly brings up a point that I wanted to bring up for discussion but was way to tired at 5 in the morning to get into earlier today <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /tired.gif ALT="|I"> ... And that is whether girls team names should be the same as the boys even though they attend the same schools? For example, The Crookston 'Pirates' fits the Boys ok but it is hard to imagine a ship full of girls or women sailing around the world under a flag of skull and crossbones or wearing big hats with daggers nestled in between their grinding teeth ready to jump the portside in order to overtake another ship by force, unless of course it happened in some flaky Hollywood movie or something like that. Maybe the Crookston girls hockey team would be better suited to a name like the Crookston 'Cows' or something like that. How about the 'Squaws' instead of the 'Redskins' for the old Grand Forks Central girls Hockey Team? Or the Bloomington-Jefferson 'Kittens' for the Jaguars Girls Hockey team? I'm sure you guys could come up with all kinds of Ideas along these lines regarding names that would better suit the girls teams than some that are currently being used by those fiesty cuties on skates. It could also create further marketing avenues for the schools that house these teams. (jerseys, hockey stick earrings, etc.) How about the 'Sisters of Disaster' for a Catholic Girls Team? I suppose the lettering on their Jerseys would be a bit too small to read in a case like that. Unless they abbreviated the name to 'SOD'. Lookout Ladies and Gentlemen! Hey.. I like some of those names like the Spuds and the Blossums because they are different and they mean something. I grew up in So St Paul, we were the Packers. Why? The whole town depended on the meat packing plants for employment.Those kinds of names are cool and you guys should be proud of them and stick up for them. The Jaguars? The Raiders? Boring! In Section 2 there are 3 teams called the Raiders ( Cretin, Roseville, and Hastings) Real unique.

I also forgot to mention my high school alma mater - the Hawley Golden Nuggets! Yuck. The town was too small to have a hockey program, but that really is the nickname for the Hawley high school sports teams.

Random thoughts - thumb-up to the GreenWave, and to any you can shorten up (Hounds, Jacks, Hawks, Jags). Too many Tigers and Cardinals. Worst p.r. move ever - removing "offensive" Indian names. Kids wanted to be Chiefs and Warriors and Braves. Slot machines and fishing rights would be o.k., I guess? Also agree on the Mighty Duck embarassment, can't believe an NHL'er or two hasn't refused to put that goofy sweater on.

Hey IceRules...good call on the benson bunnies...but that is one bad ass looking bunny!!!! I think it's pretty stupid when a school has no originality that they rely on the name of their town for their name...i.e. Red WIng Wingers, Prior lake lakers, St.John Johnnies, St. Thomas Tommies...etc. i mean come on!!!! wheres the originality??? moving on, i'm not sure about the rest of you, but i have hard time getting intimidated by the "Awesome Blossoms." or the gobblers, and i think this goes without sayin that the Indus Trojans deserves one giant tip of hte hat!!!!
