With about 6 hours left before the deadline, we are up to 32 players so far...need just two more to break the record of 33 set last week!

Ironic how "Misterright" posted right after "mrleft"...and noticed the same thing happened on the Holiday Tournament thread. Coincidence? Certainly can't be plagiarism! I'll be watching closely to see who comes out on top between these two!

I think misterleft picks all the away teams and misterright takes all the home teams. Seems like a bit.

Hmmm, Mrleft and Mrright both joined the community on the same date. Perhaps if we had a timestamp, we could check into that. I just hope someone isn't out there stuffing the ballots to help us break the record. We want to do it fair and square. Or perhaps there's some sort of experiment going on here to see if "all-left" or "all-right" is a better predictive algorithm than any one of us or the conventional wisdom picks. Of course, if the right team is the home team in each case, that might be a biased experiment on those grounds. Good, however, to add some intrigue to our contest. Now, if I can only predict better than both Mrright and Mrleft, I will be happy. At least we haven't seen a Mrtie joins us yet, have we?

Two of three games are now reported as final:

Buffalo 0, Edina 6

Taylor Williamson had two goals and an assist, and Jackie Pieper added one goal and two assists to lead Edina to a 6-0 win over Buffalo at Braemar Arena. Freshman goaltender Anna Goldstein made 17 saves to earn her first career shutout while senior Boomer Sonnek continues her recovery from an upper body injury.

Our panel deemed Edina as the overwhelming favorite to win, as 32 of 34 pick up one point apiece. While four predicted a shutout win, nobody thought it would be a 6-0 game.

Blaine 4, Armstrong/Cooper 2

Amy Schlagel, with a goal and two assists, led Blaine to a 4-2 win over Armstrong/Cooper in a Northwest Suburban matchup at the New Hope Ice Arena. Katie Swanstrom added a goal and an assist for the Bengals. Shots on goal favored Blaine by 37-18.

This was a closer game according to our expert group. The majority (21 of 34) were correct in predicting a Blaine win, but surprisingly nobody got the 4-2 score considering the average (CW) was 3-2 Blaine.

Still waiting on the result of the Wayzata/Minnetonka tilt, after which the 1st day Leaderboard will be posted.

Final score from this evening:

Wayzata 3. Minnetonka 4 (OT)

Kelsey Crow’s goal, with just 49 seconds left in overtime, gave the No. 1 Minnetonka Skippers a 4-3 win over Lake Conference rival and No. 3AA ranked Wayzata. It was Crow’s second goal of the game, her first coming on the power play that gave the Skippers a 2-0 lead early in the 2nd period. Minnetonka’s Presley Norby had a goal and two assists, while Kaitlyn Klein had a hat trick in the Trojan’s losing effort. For the game Wayzata had a slight 36-33 edge in shots on goal.

In our contest about two-thirds (22 of 34) picked Minnetonka to win. Hockeybozo had the lone perfect score, adding the bonus point to take the early lead in Week 6:

1. hockeybozo – 4

2. backspin – 3
ERhockeydad – 3
36Guy – 3
clutterbucket – 3
sinbin – 3
Nimrod – 3
mnhockey3535 - 3
D6 Girls Fan - 3
MNHockeyFan – 3
spars46 – 3
blondegirlsdad – 3

13. Seventeen with 2

30. Five with 1

Next three games this week are on Thursday, including a big showdown between the two Lakeville schools.

Lakeville South 0, Lakeville North 3

Eight different Lakeville North players ended up in the scoring column in a balanced attack as the Panthers beat the Cougars at Ames Arena. Megan Lebens was the only multi-point player with a goal and an assist, while the Panthers’ Abby Cooper stopped all 19 Lakeville South shots to get the shutout win.

26 of 34 had the Panthers winning, but nobody predicted they would shut out their crosstown rival.

Minnetonka 4, Blaine 1

Presley Norby and Kelsey Crowe each had a goal and an assist to lead the No. 1AA Minnetonka Skippers to a 4-1 win over the No. 10AA Blaine Bengals at Fogerty Arena. It was Minnetonka’s 23rd consecutive win and 11th straight to start the 2013-14 season.

31 of 34 picked the Skippers to win, and three of the 31 also got the 4-1 score correct: ERhockeydad, FishEye and FlyingWarrior each add the bonus point.

Red Wing 3, Orono 4

Game stats are not yet available.

Obviously a pretty big upset for the No. 8A Orono Spartans over the No. 3A Red Wing Wingers. Only 8 of 34 thought the Orono would come out on top, but of those 8 there were 3 very smart prognosticators who also knew they would win by a 4-3 score: hockeyfan87, Otter and Misterright!

So here is how things stand, with six of our games played, with seven to go:

1. ERhockeydad – 7 points

2. Otter – 6

3. backspin – 5
Silent But Deadly – 5
36Guy – 5
clutterbucket – 5
sinbin – 5
Nimrod – 5
mnhockey3535 - 5
D6 Girls Fan – 5
FishEye – 5
MNHockeyFan – 5 (hey you fellow fivers – we still got a shot! ;) )
spars46 - 5
Misterright – 5
hockeybozo – 5
blondegirlsdad - 5

17. Twelve tied at 4

29. Four with 3

33. Two with 2

Hate to disagree with Big Daddy, but I disagree.
Who is Red Wing's signature win? SPU, over a month ago?
Look who Orono has lost to.....Breck (first game of season which doesn't count in my book), Blake, Hopkins, and (possible future Class A state champ if they can get out of Section 8A) EGF.

Red Wing is the most over-rated team in the state year after year. It's been that way since the days of Rose Alleva. I think the way it works is that Alleva and now Schammel make their teammates look really good against rivals Northfield, New Prague, Farmington, etc. and we think that translates into a really good team. But then two years ago at state Schammel had to score 4 goals to get them to beat Hutchinson in OT (Hutchinson!) before getting throttled by Breck, and then last year she scores 4 goals again to beat Alex, only to get throttled the next game by Blake. The one superstar routine only gets you so far these days, even in Class A.

Otter, I called it a "pretty big upset" only because an overwhelming majority here (26 of 34) thought Red Wing would win, so those 26 must think of Orono's win as an upset as well. Red Wing is also the higher rated team by the 'experts' at LPH, and perhaps more telling their KRACH rating is higher: 77.205 to 29.69. Both teams' Strength of Schedule figures heavily into those KRACH numbers, so Red Wing must have at least as many "signature wins" as Orono, according to this impartial ranking system.

I do see your points about Red Wing not living up to its high rankings in most of the recent state tournaments, but when you get to the Class A semi's at the X it does get tough for all the teams that make it that far.

P.S. FWIW I struggled with my pick in the Orono/Red Wing game, but I ended up going with Red Wing, 3-2. The average for everybody (CW) was 3.7 to 2.2.

According to Minnesota-Scores.net, the final in this evening's only game was:

Warroad 4, Dodge County 3

Game stats are not yet available.

All but one (mrleft) had #11AA Dodge County winning at home, so Warroad's win HAS to be considered a pretty big upset, assuming of course the reported 4-3 score is correct.

So no real change in the top half or our Leaderboard...tomorrow's five games will likely decide things...

Just as an f.y.i., I'll be leaving shortly for a Holiday Party so I'll be a little tardy with updating the scores and point totals this evening. Should be back around 9:00pm and will get right to it shortly afterwards!

Thanks guys,

All five of our Saturday games are now in the books:

Breck 2, Red Wing 3
The Red Wing Wingers got a goal apiece from Maddy Hardyman, Reagan Haley and Nicole Schammel to get past visiting Breck. Cheyenne Harris scored both of Breck’s goals to keep the Mustangs within striking distance until the final buzzer.

This one sure wasn’t a surprise to 29 of our group of 34 who picked Breck to win, albeit most narrowly. In fact, six lucky (skilled?) ones got the 3-2 score right and add the bonus point. Those six were Knight7, D6 Girls Fan, Bighead, MNHockeyFan, Otter and Misterright.

Roseville 5, Stillwater 2
Maddie Schlossmacher scored two goals, including what proved to be the game winner, to lead Roseville over perennial rival Stillwater. Erika Bjorkman added a goal and an assist for the Raiders, who outshot the Ponies by a 31-20 margin.

Our group was fairly evenly split, with 20 favoring Roseville and 12 liking Stillwater. But nobody thought the Raiders would score more than four goals, so no bonus points awarded in this one.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s 5, Buffalo 0
After a scoreless 1st period, BSM’s first line went to work and converted on all three power play opportunities in the 2nd to build a 3-0 lead. Penn State-bound Caitlin Reilly provided much of the Red Knights’ offense, with a hat trick and adding one assist. In goal Abbey Miller stopped all 19 of the Bison’s shots to get the shutout.

BSM was the near unanimous pick to win, with just one thinking the Bison would spring the upset. Two astute prognosticators also thought the Red Knights would win in a convincing 5-0 shutout: D6 Girls Fan and Antagonist each get the extra point.

Armstrong/Cooper 1, Andover 3
Michelle Holmes scored two goals, and Mikayla Goodin and Abbie Turpin each contributed two assists to lead Andover past Armstrong/Cooper at the Andover Community Center. Andover had a 26-19 edge in shots on goal.

Another tough game to predict, with these two just one apart in the latest LPH rankings when the picks were due. But 21 got it right, and of the 21 there were FIVE who predicted a 3-1 Andover win: ERhockeydad (again!), rascalbrock, Maverick2000, RailingWizardofOZ and Mister (is he ever wrong?)right.

Orono 4, Dodge County 5
Game and player stats are not yet available, but one can safely assume that this game must have been a thriller down in Kasson.
30 of 34 favored the home team and pick up a point each, but no one got the score right. The average (CW) predicted score was 4-2 Dodge County.

Tabulated results for our standings are underway and will be posted shortly!

With just one game to go in Week 6, here’s our Leaderboard:

1. ERhockeydad – 12 points
D6 Girls Fan – 12 points

3. Otter – 11

4. clutterbucket – 10
sinbin – 10
MNHockeyFan – 10
RailingWizardofOZ – 10
spars46 – 10
Misterright – 10
hockeybozo – 10
blondegirlsdad – 10

12. Knight7 – 9
Silent But Deadly – 9
36Guy – 9
rascalbrock – 9
Nimrod – 9
mnhockey3535 - 9
FishEye - 9
Bighead - 9

20. backspin - 8
wolfman - 8
capitalpride - 8
Maverick2000 - 8
Nordic - 8
FlyingWarrior - 8
Antagonist – 8

27. Four with 7

31. Three with 6

34. One with 5

With just one game to go in Week 6, it would appear that our winner will be either ERhockeydad or D6 Girls Fan, who are tied for the lead with 12 points each. ERhockeydad has Lakeville South winning, whereas D6 Girls Fan is picking Hill-Murray. I’m sure D6 Girls Fan is hoping our consensus pick – Hill-Murray - comes out on top, as our group overall is favoring the Pioneers by a 25-7-1 margin.

Also, and not to be overlooked, is Otter. Otter could also finish in a 1st place tie if his predicted score (2-1 Hill-Murray) proves to be correct.

As for the rest of us, the best we can hope for is a somewhat respectable finish… :(

Also, and not to be overlooked, is Otter. Otter could also finish in a 1st place tie if his predicted score (2-1 Hill-Murray) proves to be correct.

As for the rest of us, the best we can hope for is a somewhat respectable finish… :(
Hill-Murray 5, Lakeville South 2 (game details not yet available)

Congratulations to D6 Girls Fan on his pick today! The Pioneer's win gave him the extra point needed to finish "all alone" atop our standings for Week 6. For the week D6 Girls Fan picked the winner in 11 out of 13 games and had two correct scores - nice going! :) This also marks the second time that D6 Girls Fan has finished on top so far this season (see next post below).
