Wayzata 3-1. Team plays so well defensively. They are playing great hockey right now.

Wayzata's defensive style will not be able to keep up with the Pioneers' depth. HM wins 6-2.

Can anybody provide some insight on this game? Must have been a good one and I'm ticked I missed. At least I don't have a lame excuse like OldGoalies from another string.

Good game. First period was pretty even. Wayzata got an early breakaway goal from Sorenson and led 1-0 after one. The Trojans dominated the early stages of the second period, but took a penalty six minutes in that seemed to turn the momentum around. French scored off a nice pass from Slattery 15 seconds into the power play to tie it. Zimmer put Wayzata in front again five minutes later when he got around a Hill defenseman and scored with a nice shot over the goalie's shoulder. Slattery tied it with four minutes left in the period when he stuffed the puck in during a scramble in front of the Trojan goal. It was 2-2 after two periods. Hill out shot Wayzata 16-7 in the second period. Wayzata had an early power play in the third and Illgen made a couple of nice saves for the Pioneers. Hill really began applying pressure about midway through the period, but Ahrens had a strong game in goal for the Trojans and the game stayed 2-2 until 27.5 seonds left when French scored his second goal of the game on a nice wrist shot over Ahrens' shoulder for the game winner.
Over all, it was a very entertaining game. I thought Hill got better as the game went on, but Wayzata was strong defensively and Ahrens made several nice saves. A solid performance by two good teams.

Wayzata at Hill-Murray

Post by stpaul »

Good recap. This was a really good game. Both teams play very solid hockey and make few mistakes. This is a real treat to have Wayzata and Edina back to back at Aldrich this week. HM, Wayzata and Edina are all well coached and have depth. Makes for very entertaining hockey. My only criticism of HM are the couple of extra stupid penalties they seem to take every game. They had 4 last night while Wayzata only had 1. Despite the extra 6 minutes shorthanded, HM outshot Wayzata 38-20. It seemed more balanced than that. Sam Illgen (pronounced eye-gen by the way) continues to be a nice surprise in goal for HM. He was an unknown before the start of the season. He looks like an experienced solid senior goalie out there.

A very entertaining game, the one Wayzata penalty was an odd call. The hit/push looked like it was from behind but occurred 20 feet from the boards. The officials huddled and decided the call was elbowing. Very strange call, HM scored seconds into the PP to make it 2-2. I thought HM dictated the play in the third.
