Edina Hill
Is this one being broadcast somewhere tonight? I've checked all the usual suspects but haven't seen it.

The game got chippy once Hill got up 4-0. The first period was pretty wide open with lots of skating room for both teams. Hill dominated the period and led 2-0. A goal in the first minute of the second period and antoher a few minutes later brought on the chippiness by both teams, although Edina seemed to be the more feisty of the two teams. Hill looked very good tonight and will be extremely tough to beat if they play at anywhere near that level.

One bad game does not mean the defense is bad.
People on this forum can judge so quickly off one performance.
Look at the numbers. Including this game Edina is giving up 2.25 goals a game against some very good competition.
6 goals given up to Hill
4 goals given up to Burnsville
Those are the only two that I would think would make it a challenge to win a game with there offense.
If you go back to the thread to the last time Edina played Hill in the Schwan cup you can see posts about how Edina did a good job defensively and limited Hill murray's chances.
And if you listened to that game you heard the praise the commentary man was giving to #22 Sam Fuss for shutting down Slattery.
I have seen this happen before though. In last years first round game of the schwan cup against St. Thomas, Edina lost 2-1 in Overtime. On that goal Novak made some moves that turned Nelson and Reno inside out. After that game I recall people saying those two D for edina were overrated and that Edina's D was the team weakness, And that continued to be the talk about Edina last year.
If you look past this game I think you will see Edina has 4 solid Defensemen in Nanne, #5 Zuhlsdorf, #2 Meyer and #22 Fuss.
The other two d men Im not sold on but #3 Foley is on his 2nd year of varsity and #4 Pugh is just a freshman so things can only get better for him.
P.S
On a separate topic....
Did anyone like those Hill jerseys? They looked like something out of the Minnesota showcase summer league. I myself was not a fan. Looked too bland for a hockey jersey.

One bad game does indicate there are questions and maybe they have gotten a bit to much hype. Plus with Edina we know that some players are often over-promoted including various names Greeny mentions above both past and present. The difference with Edina is they generally have the depth in other areas to offset flaws.
Looking only at pictures on the Hub it looked like there were many where the Edina D were flat out beat (along with and a few penalties that should've been called for leaving your feet for a hit/hands & elbows to the head/hook). Teams like Edina and DE always go far not only with depth and good coaching but they play either in a strong conference or independent schedule playing decent teams most every game and not wasting there time winning games against weak teams 10-0.
Oh and I would add the 2 goals Edina gave up against Eagan was questionable in that ugly loss.
Give credit to HM for coming back hard. And I kind of like the old jerseys.

Those are throwback Hill jerseys from the mid 1960s. They had their names on the backs. I suspect the kids will keep them. There is a website called Vintage Minnesota Hockey where you can but this stuff.green4 wrote:P.S

When they played at Ridder. Edina won 4-2 with an empty netter. HM outshot Edina that night 36-17. Smoke is not the right word. Nevertheless Edina is way better than they looked last night. Lots of hockey to be played between now and March including HM vs WBL in just 5 days. Also I don't have to remind you what can happen to the best team in the state on the way to a state final (AHA 2007 & HM 2011).Zamman wrote:Didn't Edina just smoke Hill Murray in the Schwans Cup. Face it these two teams are the two best teams in the state and will be in the state finals and the game will come down to coaching and how the strategy is handled.
Makes for a lot of banter as to which team is better though...

Right. Because "looking at pictures on the hub" really tell the story of a game.Nuts&Bolts wrote:One bad game does indicate there are questions and maybe they have gotten a bit to much hype. They have gotten so much hype because there a good team BUT you must remember this team just graduated 11 players and Lost there best player to the ushl so I think those that have remembered that this is a young and inexperienced team especially on the Defensive side realized they would have some off games and are happy it is happening now instead of Late FebruaryNuts&Bolts wrote:One bad game does indicate there are questions and maybe they have gotten a bit to much hype. Alright im not sure if I am the Greeny you are referring to as this is someone on this forum with that name who is also an edina fan but I will assume you are talking about me, and if you are, I'm curious why you think I have "over-promoted" Edina players?
Was it that I described 4 edina defensemen as "solid" or was it that I stated I was "not sold" on the final two defensemen.
If using the word solid is considered over-promoting then My apologizes.
Everything else said about the players that I wrote in that last post was said by people on this forum and by the man doing the commentary of the Schwan Cup final.
As for times in the past that I have "over-promoted" Edina players, I usually just try to give my opinion on what I think of them, I being a big fan of Edina do watch them play probably more than the average forum member so I try to give some insight on what I see out there but obviously it is opinionated and people will disagree but I try to just share what I see. I will also be the first to tell you if im not impressed with a player on Edina so I like to think I can do it both ways.
Finally... Giving up 2 goals to Eagan is not a bad game defensively, Yes Eagan is a little down this year but that does not mean they can't score two goals in a hockey game without it being considered shocking.
They scored 2 goals against Lakeville North just the other day, the difference was Lakeville unlike Edina scored goals in that game.
If you look back at that first section of this post I would say this eagan game is one of those games that describes what I wrote there.
It was definitely a poor game and giving up 2 goals to Eagan is not Ideal but with Edina's offense skill they should have been able to beat Eagan that game with only giving up 2 goals.
The Eagan game to me is the offensive lapse of this season while this Hill-Murray game is the defensive lapse of the season as of right now.

Agree. However this team does have some discipline issues. The sophs are killing them with stupid penalties, and #16 is in the box 2-3 times a game on limited shifts. Giles will put a stop to it.Sats81 wrote:Edina plays the HARDEST schedule in the state. Period. Not to mention the target they have on their back being "Edina". The wheels are not falling off! Looking at pictures on the Hub is better than reading the articles or relying on the stats these days.
Greeny/green4. OK and yes we'll talk in March since I expect Edina to still be playing then. Maybe not in the big game on Saturday night but likely playing on Saturday afternoon. Alot of depth, good coaching and a tough schedule all year long that prepares them for sections and beyond.

I agree with that. It has not hurt them too much yet but come playoff time I really hope the discipline issues of this team gets worked out.Bluewhitefan wrote:Agree. Edina - Hill-Murray
I thought the throwback jerseys were great. Makes for a special game. The Pioneers played inspired hockey. They had a great night the first time they wore the black ones too. 12/22/07 was the 25th anniversary night for the '83 undefeated state champs. The Pioneers came out in black and spanked White Bear.
