HUGE Game in 3A Tonight in Luverne
Big Update
*** Heard from some good sources Goosman practiced for the first time since the injury last night. He very well could be in the nets for Willmar tonight. ***
Willmar is a very solid team who has played a great schedule so far. They are unbeaten in Section 3A Play and if they can win tonight would go a long way in securing the #1 Seed.
Luverne is in a tail spin right now. Since the Holiday Tournament where they played wonderfully they have let a Down Marshall team skate right with them on their home ice. Also, Had to come from behind to beat a Below Average Dodge County team.
Outlook/Prediction: Willmar 4 Luverne 2
Willmar is so well coached and they will come out flying I am not sure Luverne is ready for the tempo or force that Willmar can play with. Luverne is also down one of their top Dman without him they are going to struggle handling the consistent forecheck of Willmar. With Goosman possibly returning tonight look for Willmar to be on their A Game.
Fun to Watch: The top Dman in 3A go head to head tonight #22 Sengvongxay from Luverne and #18 Tollefson from Willmar. Both do some really fun things when you watch the game. Sengvongxay had gifted speed and feet and Tollefson is such a solid two way dman.
Hoping Luverne can pack their barn for this one should be a good one!

Yeah, watch out for New Ulm! YIKES!!
I did look into the schedule, and i found one win prior to new ulm......
Rochester Schedule
Benilde-St. Margaret's L 6-0
Tartan L 7-2
Northfield W 7-2
New Prague L 4-3
St. Cloud Cathedral L 3-0
Chanhassen L 4-1
Holy Angels L 5-2
Breck L 12-0 F
Rochester Kiwanis Invitational
Fargo South/Shanley L 2-0
Verona W 2-1 F/OT
Eau Claire Memorial WI L 6-0
St. Paul Academy L 2-1 F/OT
New Ulm W 5-4 F/OT
Not a good season for Rochester. They have played a couple of better teams close.
Not a good sign for New Ulm.
BUT, for 3A, right now, it is all aobut getting to the state tournament and showing MN hockey people that individually and perhaps as a group they are moving in the right direction.
Right now Luverne is the class of 3A. From my perspective New Ulm not playing Luverne during the season is bad for 3A. If Luverne could get New Ulm, New Prague, Mankato West on their schedule it would go along way to their development and what some on here want, respect.
Again my perspective, but if a team goes undefeated, you have to give them some respect. It is difficult, no matter the schedule. But they have not done it yet.
But good luck to Luverne.

That wasn't really the point. The point is that Lourdes plays a tough a much tougher schedule than lets say your cardinals. So their record doesn't really tell you how good of a team they are. It's really sad the lack of knowledge of the game you have.notTONIGHT wrote:alumni52 wrote:notTONIGHT please look into the Rochester schedule before you post something of that nature, the worst team on there schedule Is northfield who they beat 7-2 everyone else on that schedule is better than the best team that luverne has on there schedule, the game of hockey goes a lot further then the record of the team, please acknowledge that. Why do we even play the games? Once the schedule gets set that's all you need. Lets pick the teams with the 8 toughest schedules to play at the x in march. No need to waste time with actually playing these things that i don't know anything about.hockeyfan26 wrote:That wasn't really the point. I wish Luverne wasn't such a drive because I would love to catch the game tonight. This one will be a real good one. Luverne might start slow because of the intensity they might not be used to.
The real key to this one is if goosman can play. If he plays im gonna take Willmar in a dog fight 4-3. If goosman cant go I think Luverne overwhelms the sophomore goalie and take it. Should be a fun one

Once again your forgetting the point. All I am trying to say is Lourdes isn't a bad team just because their record isn't where its normally at. its just they play very good teams. They played a 1 goal game against New Prague and St. Paul Academy. I'm root for all the section 3a games to beat teams outside of the section. and taking Lourdes into overtime looks good for both the new ulm team and this section. And that's what section 3a should be about getting better and trying to prove to the rest of the state we can compete with good hockey programs outside of our section.

I believe Luverne has had this game circled on there schedule and will really come to play. If wilmar has Goosman back or not I do not think it will make much of a difference either way as it will be his first game back and he probably will be quite rusty and Luvernes first line will overwhelm him.
Luverne will take this one 4-2 or 5-2.
This is probably the biggest game left in seeding for this section and with luverne taking it they will all but lock them self in as the number one seed.
I do not believe this will be the tale of this section though. I think that if these two were to meet in a potential final to go to the X it would be a much different game with Goosman back and ready to play.
Should be a good one, best of luck to both teams

Luverne wins in a blowout.
This game could have been a lot different with how well Meyer played in the second period, Wilmar displayed a lot of the luvernes weaknesses in the second as luverne truly struggled with their breakout throughout the entire game. This will be a very interesting game come sections if they are to meet again.
Props to luverne as when they do put all there tools together they are clearly the top team as they showed that in the third period tonight. They won and completely dominated at times but also were dominated for 30 minutes of this game (ten in the first and the whole second).
The ultimate thing to take out of this game is that luvernes capability to score is legit and Wilmar still need to find a true goal scorer or they will really struggle come play off time.
Props to luverne as they were clearly the better team and all but secured the one seed. All they have to do is finish in St. Peter this year.

Congrats to the Cardinals tonight as they more than likely clinched the 1 seed in section 3a. By no means is a 4-0 game a blowout when you get outshot but either way Luverne is right now the team to beat in this section.
They are really going to have to hope that their weak schedule doesn't come back to bite them in playoffs, but if meyer can play like he did tonight and they do pump in some goals Luverne should take care of business in sections. But you still never know. While getting the 1st seed is great, it doesn't mean squat if you don't show up.

Blowout are you kidding me??!?!?!?notTONIGHT wrote:4-0 Luverne. Final. Goosman did not play. Shots were close, chances were not.
Luverne wins in a blowout.
What an arrogant statement and just plain dumb.
The score was not an indicator of the game at all. Willmar was in control for large parts of the game. Their forecheck gave Luverne TONS of trouble. Willmar was able to shutdown the young dynamic duo with effective physical play. They let the 8th grader Nelson get loose once all night and he buried his one chance. They took the State's Leading Scorer out of the game. Smedsrud was a non factor.
18 Tollesfson for Willmar was a beast he was taking it end to with ease all night. Their forwards which are their strength seemed thrown off by the physical play. Luverne played hard in their Dzone they were not giving up prime scoring chances. They kept things to the outside and Meyer was great at one and done shot attempts not alot of rebounds to speak of.
Willmar plays so hard and are so well coached. They totally bottled up Luverne in the second period. However, right now they are lacking a goal scorer who can make a play to go along with all that great pressure. They need to find that our they will struggle come playoffs.
Overall, the game could of gone either way it was back and forth for the 1st period Willmar dominated the 2nd and Luverne carried the play in the third.
3 Stars
Kendall Meyer (Luverne)- Big shutout performance
Logan Norman (Luverne)- Had two big goals
Trey Tollefson (Willmar)- Coaches son was all over the ice made plays all night
Fun game to watch and attend. Great Crowd in Luverne last night. It was jammed packed! They have the best atmosphere in 3A right now. The Town Is JACKED about Hockey! There was a fun buzz in the building all night.
Both teams showed why they are dangerous. Luverne even with having their young guns shut down found ways to bury pucks.
Willmar plays a very physical game and will be fun to see them match up with New Ulm another high flying offensive unit.

Luverne won and converted their chances. They played well and they were able to expose the Willmar Back-Up Goalie.notTONIGHT wrote:The score is not an indicator of a game.

Got it.
Who won this thing anyway? You make it sound like willmar did. 3Atrout is back!
Luverne is a very good team this year and fun to watch. However, Willmar had a great game plan and their physical play threw off Luverne for parts of the game.
My point was you said it was a blow out and it was not even close to that. Anyone without Luverne colored glasses could see that. Congrats on the win to your team.
Good Win for Luverne but it was not a blowout at all.

Elsewhere in Section 3A on Saturday
Blake 6 NU Area 3
- New Ulm playing a tough schedule indeed they were severely outshot 55 to 23 in this one. Sleepy Eye's Berkner was very solid in the New Ulm net with 49 saves.
Orono 5 LDC 2
The Dragons played a very good opponent in Orono tough in thier first game since the Coach Olson accident. Wahl was a wall in the nets for the Dragons stopping 44 of 49 shots.
Hutch 6 St. Peter 5
The goalie issues continue for Hutch the Sophomore Nelson gives up 5 goals on only 20 shots..... Hutch's Cowger saves the day with yet another hat trick this season.
Mankato East 7 Worthington 1
Mankato East Hammers Worthington... The short bench for worthington may have caused issues today. Only have 10 skaters and this was the third game of the week looks like they had no legs on this day.
UPSET OF SECTION 3A FOR 1/11/14
Morris Benson 5 Windom 2
WOW the storm earn their first win of the season in this one. Windom had been playing better of late this one makes no sense.
Congrats though to the Storm on their first win of the Season!

The OTHER way to bring attention to the Section is to "READ" all of the seriously misguided comments regarding the section. I mean seriously, this is almost better than "As the World Turns".Nuts&Bolts wrote:Based on my read Willmar could "easily" have won. I guess this thread is one way to bring attention to 3A hockey.
So this was a pretty important game for Willmar, JMO I guess, but even "Trout" recognized this, well at least before last nights REALITY check. So, with it being an important game, are you suggesting they decided not to take this victory? As in your own words, it was "EASILY" at hand? Uhhh, OK. You get an eye-roll too.

Here's a tidbit for you. Until you realize the past has NO control over the future, you're going to continue to be "Confused, Amazed, Surprised". And if you have the desire to tighten-up your "Predictions" you may want to consider a different approach. I suggest throwing Spaghetti at the wall.Section 3A HockeyScout wrote:Elsewhere in Section 3A on Saturday
