Hats off to Ulrich, he played a great game in nets for Falls. Hibbing outshot them 39-17 but Ulrich was a wall all night.

And to complete the section 7A shakeup, Denfeld knocks off Duluth Marshall 3-2...

I don't think this will shake things up all that much unless there are more upsets. Marshall still has a lock on the 2 spot unless they lose another section game.

Maple Grove 4
Elk River 2
FINAL

Thoughts:

While the sudden loss of Zerban probably hurt the Elks a bit offensively, as well as created an awkward feeling out stage as the lines get shaken up, I think this game came down to the goaltending more than anything.

Shots were about even, power play time was even. Berglove was alright but MG's Goodman was better. And I believe that was the difference for this matchup.

After looking into this Brady Goodman kid, I'm quite impressed. Since he has taken over for Cal McKenney, Goodman is 6-1-1 with a .945 sv% and a 1.82 GAA. I think we can definitely count on MG giving Blaine a run for their money in 5AA despite their 3-9 loss to them earlier.

With that said, Elk River needs to get their lines straightened out now that Zerban is gone. So far, it looks to be only the top line that is now capable of consistently putting up points against competent opponents. Roberts will have his hands full as he experiments.

On a related note - Blaine has recently changed starting goalies with similar results. Lots of important NW Suburban conference games coming up for the top teams in the next two weeks.

I was at this game, overall, it was very entertaining. Back and forth throughout the night, but you're right, Goodman looked really good. Especially late in the 3rd when ER was turning up the pressure and pouring on the shots. I was surprised by how good his numbers were for being a sophomore. He moved really well and made some incredible saves in the third. Got lucky a few times with a couple posts, which could have quickly changed the turnout of the game. Berglove looked as if he was fighting the puck a little last night, but he eventually settled in. Got hung out to dry on a couple goals, and the penalty shot was unfortunate for ER. Not sure who the D-man was that dropped on the puck in the crease, but that shifted all momentum to MG.

Nothing like a good shake up in the NWSC.
