I have seen many hockey games in my life but last night in Brooklyn Park was one of the most improbable games I have ever witnessed.
The highly ranked AA Benilde St. Margaret's Red Knights with former Totino Grace Eagle great Carter Roo take on an Eagles team that has played pretty solid defense most of the year but the offense hasn't always been there. Benilde is rated 10th in AA and Totino 8th in A on the Minnesota Hockey Hub Website.
The former Eagle Roo started the game out by scoring two goals right away in the game and the Red Knights led 2-0 after one. The Knights outshot the Eagles 12-3 in the period.
In the second period the Red Knights tried to make it a blowout as they scored two goals in the first two minutes to make it 4-0. Zach Hale and Nate Meyer put the biscuit in the basket for the Knights. What could have been the dagger a minute later saw an Eagles player covering the puck up in the crease to force a penalty shot. However that is when the momentum changed. Dominic Wippler the Eagles goalie who was bombed with close range shots from the get go stopped the penalty shot giving the Eagles a boost and what happened no one would have believed.
Joey Brey scored on a scramble in front of the Knights net for the Eagles followed by a nice snap shot by Kai Barber and Totino Grace was back in the game. In the last few minutes Barber scored again to make it 4-3 Benilde after two. Barber proving the point by putting the puck on goal and good things will happen. That was the case on this shot. Benilde outshot Totino 12-6 in the period.
The third period had Barber record the hat trick early on to tie the game up at 4-4. Late in the period the Eagles scored on a nice goal by Nick Tandeski to turn a 4-0 deficit into a 5-4 lead. The Knights had to pull their goalie and Tandeski scored again making the final 6-4 in favor of Mark Loahr's Eagles.
The shots in the third period were Benilde 11 and Totino Grace 6. Despite being outshot 35-15 the Eagles were able to win the game.
There was not one person in that arena that thought that was going to be the case when the score was 4-0 Benilde and they were about to attempt a penalty shot early in the second period.
The three stars were (3) Carter Roo-Benilde-2 goals, (2) Dominic Wippler-Totino-Many big saves including a penalty shot save, (1) Kai Barber-Totino Grace-Hat trick. Honorable Mention...Spencer Naas-Benilde-3 assists...Nick Tandeski-2 goals including the GWG.
Saturday the Eagles are home against another Knights squad, this one however is from Irondale. Likewise, Benilde plays another Eagles squad with this one being from Eden Prairie in Eden Prairie also on Saturday.

This game sounds like a carbon copy of the Totino-Breck game 2 years ago. Breck went up 4-0 and if I remember correctly Totino scored 7 straight to win 7-4.Mr Hockey wrote:I have seen many hockey games in my life but last night in Brooklyn Park was one of the most improbable games I have ever witnessed.
