High school hockey tryouts

Post by HHHockey982 »

I'm a new high school hockey parent coming next year, I saw my sons Varsity hockey roster was all freshmen through juniors. Team didn't do to good this year but I was wondering if he has a shot at varsity hockey. I think he does but with a team that consists of those players. I don't know if they'll cut any of the retiring. Thoughts?

There is no way for anyone who doesn't know who your son is and what school he attends to answer your question, or even provide you with a probability that he'll make it. Assuming your son is now pretty much on a par with the bottom few of the returning players - no better or worse than those who didn't get much ice time this past season - I think it's safe to say he'll have a legitimate shot to make it IF he works his butt off between now and next fall - including on his strength and fitness - and improves his hockey skills to the point where he is noticeably better than the team's returning marginal players. How hard he works to improve will depend on how much HE wants it, not how hard you hope he wants it!

He'll definitely make it! Your kid is easily the most talented player I've seen in generations! Heck, he should probably just skip varsity and go straight to the WHL, which everybody on the planet agrees is the best route to the NHL. I certainly hope the Wild are watching. They may have to trade up to get him in the draft, but he's definitely worth it, IMHO.

EX: tough Monday morning? Lighting up a guy on his third post ever is not very cool.

Most High School coaches will play the best players regardless of grade. Some will favor younger players over seniors who are not expected to help out much; some favor the older kids.

MNHockeyFan nailed it. Your kids best bet is to get so good (and strong) this summer that they have to take him next year.

Meh, just trying to keep this board from getting more self-validating than it already is.

My serious response would be: The varsity coach probably wants to win and probably wants to keep his job. He'll pick the players that give him the best chance to do so, regardless of which team they played on last season (unless he has a kid on the team, in which case all bets are off).
