They ended up losing 2-1.
That Holy Angels team was excellent. Trebil had a very impressive run there from about 1999-2007.
The 2002 Roseville team was probably better than the 2003 team but lost to AHA in the semifinals.
And give some credit to that 2003 Anoka team for shutting down the high powered AHA offense after Luth gave up those goals. That team really came out of nowhere to win the title, would be kind of nice to see something like that happen again.

Agreed. They executed a good game plan. Anoka almost didn't make it out of the quarterfinals that year. If not for that Ben Hendrick goal at the end of the game against Duluth East. Right from a face off in East's zone, pretty incredible.

-Prior to 2000, no private school other than Hill-Murray had ever made the tournament, with the exception of Cretin-Derham Hall in 1988.
-Only four private schools have ever made the tournament: Hill-Murray (26 appearances), Holy Angels (five appearances), Cretin-Derham Hall (three appearances and Benilde-St. Margaret's (two appearances).
-All four of these schools have won championships (HM 3, AHA 2, CDH 1, BSM 1) and each school has won one apiece since 2005.
-There has never been a Private vs. Private semifinal game.
-As they are currently set up, no section has ever had more than one private school go to state (although STA might change that this season).
Since 2000:
-Seventeen of the 112 tournament entrants have been private schools (15.2 percent).
-The most private schools in a single tournament is two. The breakdown is as follows:
2 teams: 5 times
1 team: 7 times
0 teams: 2 times
-Private schools have appeared in six of the 14 state championship games, with 2002 and 2012 being Private vs. Private.
-Private schools are 5-3 in state championship games, with two of those losses coming to other private schools.
Breakdown:
Metro Public: 7-2
Private: 5-3
Northern: 1-8
If I have made any mistakes, please feel free to let me know.
Great post. Only mistake I can see is since 2000, saying Hill Murray has gone 2-3 in state championship games. Their only state championship since 2000 was 2008. Other 2 were 1983 and 1991 I believe. Hill fans is this correct?

We haven't won 2 titles since 2000. If I recall correctly, we lost to Holy Angels in 2002, won it all against Roseau in 2008, and have lost the last two, to BSM and Edina respectively. We may have made another title game since 2000, but I don't remember I think we're 1-3 in four title game appearances since 2000

Prior Lake has a very good Bantam AA (ranked #7) group coming up (as well as Peewee AA - ranked #5) and their leading scorer was a freshman this year. IF (and thats a big if when it comes to PL), the kids stay they should give Edina all they can handle for a few years. Hopefully Burnsville can continue to be somewhat of a threat so this section turns competitive again.

Minor correction but in 2008 Hill beat Roseau in the Semi's and then beat Edina in the final

Seems unlikely with Benilde being solid most years and Holy Family on the rise. I just don't see how three private schools on the west side could all compete at once. To me the odd one out seems to be AHA.
What would really help 2AA be more competitive would be if Prior Lake could bring the success that there Pee Wee and Bantam teams are having into there high school program
Some random thoughts before the first ticket to State is punched today:
Edina has made the tournament 6 consecutive years now, looking for 7.
Hill Murray has made it 7 out of the last 8. Hill played Stillwater in the 2009 section final. It took them double overtime to win.
East has made it 5 consecutive years.
Moorhead and Roseau have represented Section 8 every year since 1990, with the exception of 1996, when Alexandria made it. And it will be one of them again this year.
First time since 2009 that Lakeville North and South are not playing for the 1AA Championship.
Since 2008 (major realignment/renumbering of metro sections), some combination of Blaine, Maple Grove, and Centennial have played for the Section 5AA Championship...except 2013 when Champlin Park upset Blaine in the semifinals.
Section 3AA (since 2008 realignment/renumbering) has been won by a new team each year, except when Eagan repeated in 2011-2012. Woodbury in '08, Cretin '09, Apple Valley '10, Eagan '11-12, Eastview '13. Maybe STA this year?
We all know there has not been a repeat winner in 6AA (since realignment in 2008) and will not be again this year, but the representative from 6AA has never lost the opening game of the AA State Tournament (Finishing 3rd '08, 1st '09, 2nd '10, 1st '11, 1st '12, 4th '13)

The heartbreak in 2003 Anoka made a good run that year, it is exciting to see those runs, even if it wasn't exciting for me that year. Hope to see some good action this year.
I will be pulling for Edina or BSM. I have former players on both teams and since Wayzata is out I will be cheering for them.

Sorry, but since 2008 no team has won a AA Section championship in its first year as a AA team.

No kidding!! All the reason I dumped my State Playoff tickets 5 years ago. Gone are the days of the Cinderella Story teams. Predictable and BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't much fall for Karl East waxing all philosophic about the dreams of State tournament glory when hockey has become such a limited version of have and have not success. Quite honestly "building the big pyramid" that Herb Brooks envisioned is non existent in the state of regulatory hockey. Cost, cost and more cost have reduced quality programs and the attrition rate will continue due to economics and lack of player numbers and an overzealous regulatory body that has no clue how to build numbers.

Also agreed.
I predict a *lot* of smaller programs, throughout the state, dropping hockey altogether in the not so distant future.
Costs, lack of interest (for various reasons), etc.
It will become even more metro-oriented, than it is now.

You guys must have missed 2012 when Lakeville South knocked off top seeded East on their run to third place where they took down Moorhead and the outstanding Michael Bitzer. They were a really fun team to watch. The looks on their faces when I believe Lauderdale? scored the go ahead goal in the third and then when Kloos buried the empty netter made the entire tournament worth it for me that year. I agree with you guys though, it does get boring seeing the same teams. I believe this is my eighth year in a row going to the tournament, meaning I have yet to see a state tourney without the Hornets. It would be nice to see a true cinderella though like a 5 or higher seed in a section.
