I have only been watching since the early 90s but, to me, this team impressed me more than any other team I can remember. It's hard for me personally to compare those Jefferson dynasty teams or the Duluth East teams that took over later in the decade, because I think the overall level of play has gotten better in the MHSHL. So if the question is in relation to the other contemporary teams of a particular year, maybe Edina 2014 isn't even on the radar. But I think this Edina team could beat most of the other champions from years past.

Edina clearly didnt need to be any better than they were the last 2 seasons. Austin and Newhouse would have been the 5th and 6th defensemen on this years team. Walker was here and the team was a disaster, he is a great stickhandler but it ends there. Wasnt that Austin and Newhouse who got smoked in the EP overtime.
The rest of them left because they were afraid they wouldnt make the team when they were in the 9th and 10th grade. The reason the current team is successful is because of the chemistry and the BSM kids never had any when they were here.

I'd call them one of the best teams of the past 15 years, at the very least. Their competition for that title would probably include 2001 Elk River and 2004 Centennial, and maybe 2008 Hill-Murray on the strength of their title run. They lost a few more games, but they also played one of the toughest schedules ever made, and their playoff dominance was as strong as anyone's in recent memory.
They were also a #1 team that finished the deal, which isn't always common. The state is littered with teams that were as good as those teams listed above, if not better, but blew it in the playoffs...2000 Eden Prairie/Elk River, 2005 Moorhead, the 08-09 Hornets, 2010 Minnetonka, 2012 Duluth East.
In recent history, I think they're up there with the best of them.

They are absolutely one of the best in the last 15 years. I would include the 1999 Roseau team in this discussion as well. Their performance in that tourney that year was pure dominance.karl(east) wrote:I'd call them one of the best teams of the past 15 years, at the very least. Technically 1999 is now 16 Tourneys ago, but it was an arbitrary cutoff, and yes, that Roseau team is on the level of these other ones.Sats81 wrote:They are absolutely one of the best in the last 15 years. Before that you get into the East and Jefferson runs in which they were putting out loads of top-end talent year after year. With the possible exception of Holy Angels 02-05, no one has done that since...until Edina came along. There have been some teams that are better than them in individual years, and a few programs aren't too far behind, but Edina's run over the past 5ish years has been unmatched, and this team was the best of the bunch they've had.
Depends how you define best, or best all time.
Winning record? Winning over 3 year period? Winning consecutive tourneys? # D1s? #Early departures? # NHL draftees or draftwatch?
Consistency of wins? ( This team had some unexpected losses this year, some other close games, and a blowout by Hill)
Without checking MinnHock, Id agree this team and likely continued dynasty would rank right up there towards top going back 15 years.
But going back 20 years, the Jefferson 1993 team still has to rank best, and their dynasty on either side of that.
Followed by Duluth East mid 90s,

I wonder if they were overrated because of their blowout wins against LN and Stillwater, two teams that weren't used to the spotlight. I would've like to have seen them play HM, DE, and possibly EP.
Unless there are a lot of departures, I don't see Edina's dominance ending anytime soon. There are some very good players coming up, with the only possible question mark being at goalie.

You realize that some of the kids you named never went to an Edina public school, right? They were private school students from the beginning at OLG. So they didn't "leave" if they were never there to leave.falconeer wrote:Bluewhitefan wrote:

I would have liked to have seen another HM game. Edina was a completely different team after losing badly to them in the middle of the season. Considering that Edina took one from them early in the year, a rubber match would have been great!57special wrote:I wonder if they were overrated because of their blowout wins against LN and Stillwater, two teams that weren't used to the spotlight. It's never a perfect comparison, but I doubt DE would have done any better than Eagan. Eagan really controlled the game against them in the first round and proved that they were just a better team.
As far as Eden Prairie is concerned... Edina faced them three times this year and beat them every time. In fact, Edina has beaten Eden Prairie 16 out of their last 18 games. As dangerous as Eden Prairie can be to the field, Edina owns them and the way this team was skating in the tournament, they were never going to drop a game against a border rival that they have beaten consistently for more than a decade.
This team was dominant for the lst month. Get used to it. Edina gets better as the eyars roll along.
This dominant group of Edina seniors is the only class in a five-year stretch (from last year's grads to next year's frosh) who failed to win a State Bantam or PeeWee Championship as second years. Next year's Seniors won both Peewee and Bantam titles. Three of next years juniors (Dornbach, Bellows, Zuhlsdorf) won four State titles in a row (PW1, PW2, B1, B2). This weekend, the Bantams try for a State Championship three-peat.

This is year's BAA squad is nowhere near the level of previous years. They had a mediocre record this year, as they did two years ago in PWAA, yet somehow found a way to squeak into State.bsmguy wrote:This team was dominant for the lst month. Get used to it. It's the next two years after that where they get strong again.
Would have been interesting to see how good they would have been if they hadn't lost some second years to Varsity and JV teams late.57special wrote:This is year's BAA squad is nowhere near the level of previous years.
