not good hockey
The games between these two teams are never what you would call "good hockey"...mainly because rarely are they ever any good...but as rivalry's go I have yet to see one so intense. St.Francis vs Cambridge...it gets more and more interesting every year...at least 2 squad cars are always present...for a couple years they even had a police dog in the building! Greatest Rivalry
Well there are so many, but The Rapids, Greenway one has to be up there. Duluth East vs. Cloquet is one of my favorites. It is always a real clash, you have the "cake eaters" or the team from the side where the grass is greener (perception not so much the case) vs. the blue collar working at the mill like my father did before me kinda team. Even when East was dominate in the mid to late 90's the Cloquet game was a great one to watch. Two teams that absoluly hate each other. It is my one of my favorite rivalry, with maybe the exception of Roseau vs. Warroad. I was fortunate enough to be in Roseau when those two teams played, it was a tremendous game, and atmosphere. That is what high school athletics should be about. Those kina of games.

Cloquet--East
The Cloquet-East has to be the biggest rivalry even though it has calmed down in the past years and doesnt have as much anger between the two schools. Everybody circles those two dates on there calendars when these two schools meet. I remember when these schools filled the DECC with whatever it is something like 5500 people. Cant wait until December 18th when they meet at the DECC.

Re: rivalries
As far as northeast MN, it is Rapids/Greenway hands down. Last year during the 7AA title game when KDLH's Chris Long was doing the announcing, he said you have not seen a hockey game until you've seen Rapids vs. Greenway. So, coming from someone that is neutral that covers HS hockey, that kinda solidifies the GR/Greenway rivalry over the East/Cloquet rivalry. I have not been to a Warroad/Roseau game, so I really can't say anything about that.

EV
i would say that EV and Apple valley is a big rivalry same town and all. Also over the years EV and AHA has become a very good rivalry and they are always good games to watch.

Greenway-Rapids
It's gotta be Rapids-Greenway. I go to all the rapids home games, and none of them matchup to the intesity of wehn Greenway is in town. As a matter a fact, they play Friday, and I'm gonna check out their game in Coleraine. I can't wait. I also went to the Edina game, and seeing how great that one was, I can't imagine how sweet it's gonna be Friday.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

NORTH TARTAN
north vs. tartan is always huge in any sport, for hockey and football it's one of those sports where you have to get to your bus quickly or you might get jumped because you won.

rivals
Roseville vs White Bear always is out of control, White Bear vs Hill Murray, Roseville vs. Mounds View used to be one of the most intense ever not in just hockey tho, Basketball, Football and Hockey, the games used to have to be played in the afternoons, with multiple police squads outside in the parking lot and many more in the buildings/stands.

Re: rivals
I can assure that Edina vs. Eden Prairie has been heating up over the past 6 years. They seem to meet in the section finals just about every year. Who could forget the 6 OT won by Edina around 5 years ago, then EP won the next year just have Edina win in a couple OT again. The stage could be set for another good one this year.

East-Cloquet
The jacks vs. greyhounds has always been a big deal. Posters in schools read Axe the Jacks and on the opposite end pound the hounds. The atmosphere at the deck and even in the CAHA is great when these two teams match up. I remember being in 4th grade going to the decc for that game...the intensity has dropped, but I have no doubt that it will continue to be a legendary match up.

Re: Hockey Rivalry's
This posting comes up about once a month and still remains without question. Roseau vs. Warroad. Rams lead the legendary match-up 90-49-4.
Ram Hockey

Re: Hockey Rivalry's
this is one of the recurring threads. i would love to say my hometown, Eveleth, was legendary but it seems like some out do it.i do think that with true hockey heritage in mind the greatest rivalry HAS to go to a northern town, hands down. Warroad and Roseau seem to be the favorites. must be one h3ll of an atmosphere

Rivalries
Ok heres the truth, the best match-up in minneosta hockey is Grand Rapids vs. Greenway, how do i know this i was the Goalie for Grand Rapids last year. I player in this amazing match-up i have watched it for years to, but the feelings of being on the ice in this game is an experience of a life time after that game i was ready to die i didnt think anything could ever match it and still dont neither team sleep for a week before that u cant nerves wont stop running, these two towns have absolute hatred for eachother the week of this game each team runs a tough practice to prepare for this game, i cant explain the feeling i played in the section title last year and lost to duluth east in overtime 2-1 one we were one pipe away from going to the Excel center and that feeling didnt quite top the feeling of playing greenway in both our home arena or the snake pit in coleraine. its do or die when u step on the ice, u can never hear whistles being blowin because the fans never sit down nor shut up. people if u havent experienced this game u need to at least once before u die there is nothing like it, i mean the East/Cloquet game is huge and is a great rivalary too but it just doesnt compare. its always been big even when one team would blow out the over but the last two years it hads been one goal games over time wins and ties and its only gonna get better take it from me.

Re: Rivalries
NORBY? Is it really you? I'm the former D.J. at the IRA. I moved to Anchorage. I think you knew my brothers Jerod and Jordan from school. I just wanted to say you put forth an awesome effort last year along with Hips and the rest of the team. You guys did come so close to the Xcel last year, but if anything, you guys turned the program around. I'll never forget that season. You guys had your ups and downs but you hung in there. I think the entire city was proud of that effort. THAT, was Indian hockey.

Greenway vs. Rapids...no question about it.
Greenway and Grand Rapids is the best rivalry you will every see or, if your lucky, take part in. You go through all the levels of hockey basically practicing for that game when you play hockey in either system. You think it's intense when you are in the lower levels but once you get to the big show it blows your mind, you can't believe how bad you want to win. This means that it brings all kinds of emotions to the table and it always brings the best game atmosphere you will ever see in your life. For both of these schools that is the biggest bragging right you can get on the other school, because its all that matters. It beats Cloquet and East mainly because of how focused both schools are on hockey, theres many things that kids in those schools put above hockey but up north all we would care about was who won the hockey game.

Prior Lake vs. Shakopee
when these 2 teams play it is always a good game to watch and very rowdy for both schools too i read above that at some gaem there is always 2 cop cars there well at these games there is like 5 to 6 no matter what fans when ever these two teams step out o nthe ice against each other it is oneof the most physical games in the state which is very exciting to watch but its not all head hunting hits they are legal and if you dont beleive me you must see one of the games this year because the head to head games with these 2 teams will usually determine who will get second place in the conference only behind Holy Angels

Roseau/Warroad
No other rivalry gets as much media attention. NO other rivalry has been around as long. No other rivalry comes close in any aspect. This is nothing to brag about, but no other rivalry needs so much security for a game between two towns with a next to nothing crime rate.

rivalries
I 'VE BEEN TO BOTH WARROAD/ROSEAU AND RAPIDS/GREENWAY GAMES AND THERE VERY COMPARABLE TO EACH OTHER. THE INTENSTY OF EACH GAME IS UNBELIEVABLE. IN THESE GAMES YOU CAN THROW THE RECORDS OUT THE WINDOW,THESE GAMES WILL BE VERY HEATED. IS THE CHICKEN COMING OUT ON FRIDAY??????????? I CAN ONLY HOPE!

rivalry
Roseau/Warroad or Rapids/Coleraine? My choice over time would be Roseau/Warroad, however since the split to A and AA, from what I have seen in both rivalries, I would put the emphasis on the Rapids/Coleraine games. Those games set the tone for rankings in the section and if they meet again in the Section playoffs the atmosphere is intensely magnified!

The Roseau/Warroad rivalry is just for bragging rights over a regular season game, which both teams and coaches realize has little to with going to State. Intense, surely, but once they tangle twice, it is back to focusing on more important games. ie games that affect sectional standings.

Good luck to Rapids/Coleraine and Roseau/Warroad teams this year, and may the rivalries be in the true spirit of sportsmanship!

NWSC
The north west suburban conference has some of the biggest rivalrys in the state. Elk River, Maple Grove, Blaine, Anoka, Coon Rapids, Osseo are huge rivalry's. In the NWSC the teams have huge schools, lots of kids and a lot of talent and size. Last year there was 5 teams rated in the top 20 in the state and anyone of those teams could have made it and really competed in state. This year the NWSC lost a lot of great talent...all the teams are worse then they were last year. But keep on eye on the NWSC, there still is good talent there, players like Joe Long (ER), Nate Prosser(ER) , Matt Soterberg(Anoka), Chase Everetz(Anoka), Kyle Olstad(Anoka), Brian Peterson (coon rapids), and Matt Case (Maple Grove)
