The reason you never heard about this award before is that it's the first time they've given it.

Andrew Rohkohl named the best high school goalie in the country? The Edina fans should be happy. Although USA Today might want to check if somebody was padding the resume on his behalf.....
G: Andrew Rohkohl, Edina, Minn.

Vitals: 5-9, 150, senior, catches left

Noteworthy: Compiled a 23-4-1 record with three shutouts, a 1.84 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. Made 36 saves in title game over a previously-unbeaten, No. 1-ranked team as Edina won second-straight Minnesota Class 2A state championship. Uncommitted.
Talk about embellishment (ding!). :D

Talk about embellishment (ding!). :D[/quote] No embellishment here. He got the job done, sure his defense was really good but Rohkohl picked up where his D left off. USA Today should be congratulated for doing such a fine job with their research on this. He lost a big 2-1 game to a great Eagan team early in the season. He came back in State to win 3-1 against that same fine Eagan team. That was a big win. You know the rest of the story. Thanks for sharing the big news for this fine Edina player. I hope he can play D1 he is very quick and athletic and smart.

There were two points of embellishment:

1. Lakeville North was not undefeated. They had four losses.

2. Rohkohl didn't have 36 saves in the title game, unless you think multiplying by three is valid. He had 12.

I'm not saying he's deserving or not but I am saying untruths don't help the cause of his fan base.

It's an error, not embellishment. Wrong championship game, they're talking about the Schwann's Cup Championship against Hill

one more point for Edina's goalie Andrew Rohkohl

Post by secondplace3x »

This past season Edina won four tournaments, Turkey Trot, their own Edina Tournament, Schwans and the State Championship. They were battle tested going into State. I know you all know that had a tough schedule of great opponents. Andrew Rohkohl Their goalie, I think was in goal for each final game of each tournament. Not well known going into the season he did an excellent job. Edina's losses were all road games against teams that came up big in those games and other then the Hill loss they were close games. The goalies in those losses each had memorable games. After the Hill game the Hornets did not lose again. It was a great season, not just for the Hornets but many teams had remarkable play all around. It's hard to repeat, its hard to win three games in three days. It's important to have a deep team and avoid OT. Look for more great hockey next season. One last point I thought the Elite League was very good for many reasons, I'll leave it at that. I've enjoyed this forum for the last 5 years. I just need to remember how many of you are deeply supportive of your community teams and programs. Your not really mean spirited your hard core for your boy's. Thanks for all the great posts, advice, history and banter.

As much as it pains me to say this, unfortunately people are focusing on the wrong statistic.

He is 5'9" and a goalie. Congrats to him on an excellent season, and all the best to him in his future.....

"Inadvertent" or "honest" error is always the excuse given when resume padders and Wall Street insiders get caught out, isn't it?

The easiest (and least sinister) explanation is that you are right, and that the USA Today reporter did a lousy job of reporting. Or, perhaps, it was the copy editor's fault when he or she deleted the connecting text that would have clearly identified the "title game" as Schwan's, rather than the State title game. Might even be the case that the person working with the selection committee who wrote up the press release made the error when they incorrectly summarized a much larger description of the Edina goalie's accomplishments.

The slightly more sinister explanation, of course, is that this "error" occurred further upstream, and was incorporated (either accidentally or intentionally) into the material used by the selection committee to make their decisions.

We'll probably never know where the "error" was introduced. It's unfortunate that the error raises doubts and eyebrows...but it shouldn't be unexpected. Not after a senior goalie is declared best in the nation on the heels of two other senior goalies being declared best in the state.

It depends on what your definition of "Best" is. Those other 2 goalies got their recognition all year, and in my opinion much of it due to name recognition as much as actual performance.

There are a lot of very good goalies in the state who one could argue deserve consideration for the award, but were never in the mix for reasons outside of their control. To be the best, apparently you need to play Soph thru Senior years and have lots of buzz surrounding you. If the stats don't necessarily back that up, oh well....

We already have people locked in on 2 guys for the award next year for the same reasons. Are they solid goalies? Sure. But what about the kid who did not get to play their Soph year, or the kid who maybe gets his chance as a Senior, or the one not playing in a high profile program? If he is better, should he not get that recognition? Doesn't matter, because he will not based on how the system has played out in the past.

I am happy to see a kid who backstopped a team to a state title in his only year of starting get some recognition.

Oh definitely. I'm sure they were trying to give the kid a leg up with all those teams that scout based on whose name they read in USA Today.

Again, the Rohkohl bashing for about the 5th time this season in different threads.

The kid had better statistics, no matter which of the 3 stats you like, than
both of the other Brimsek seniors. ( Yes the others had a great Elite Season, but Rohkohl had to live thru the doubt of not even being invited.)

He also came up big in regular season tournaments, as well as playoffs and state championship. He stopped them when he had to.

If people want to look further, look back on CD/video when he was a junior and had to fill in for Benjamin. In one of the ten best high school games in any venue for perhaps a decade, Rohkohl held top ranked Hill Murray scoreless in regulation, only to lose in overtime. That's when he really got my attention.

Was he perfect this season? No. There were some slipups, like at Aldrich.

Was Shepard the best senior goalie talent in the State? Probably, Was Rohkowl the next best senior? Probably, based on the evidence. Were there better junior goalies? Yes.

I think all the doubters at the beginning of season should have been satisfied by the end

So Im happy he got some recognition, newspaper error or not.

Having the benefit of seeing him play, I'd have ranked Chase Phelps higher. Nothing against the other guys. They're definitely good and Minnesota was represented well. My personal opinion is that Chase is better than he's ranked.

And congrats to Avery Peterson for being selected inaugural Player of the Year. Couldn't happen to a finer young man.
