Section 3A 2014 - 2015
Nottonight's prediction segment. August style.....
Its the year of the bird!
Eagles, Cardinals, and Dragons (flight animal right?)
Cant see much of a big rise out of any of the bottom feeders. Worthington, Fairmont, Redwood and Morris will maintain where they are.
Litch, Hutch, and Marshall will be in the middle again. You can preach about Hutch's talent all day/season long, until it materializes, no one in the section cares.
New Ulm, and Luverne will be the top two teams in the section.
Luverne will be proud to accept New Ulm to the Big South Conference in January. New Ulm can't hide behind their pretend "superior" schedule any longer. But HUTCH CAN!! So that opinion can still thrive to maintain the forum posts!
Willmar is the wild card in my opinion. Lost a ton of talent. Brings back some great players. Will the coaching staff put the pieces together to make a run?
Its going to be a great season! Goaltending will be a big question mark across the section. There are several teams with some marquee games outside the section. The development of the Big South Conference will minimize the coward effect that haunted the section for a few years.
There is division 1 talent in the section this year. This is not a commonplace for section 3A. Lets embrace the attention and run with it!
A Team from Section 3A is playing on National TV in January, that has never happened before.
Its finally a season when you don't have to hang your head low when you mention the section you represent. Stand up 3A, lets make it a great one!

Ouch! Be careful SouthernFan to practice what you preach. Talent is indeed a tricky word. 3A does have some very talented players. I would say that only a couple of those are d1. The rest of them tend to disappear when they play against better opposition, like a couple highly touted players from both Luverne and New Ulm that were pretty nonexistent in the playoffs. Not being from that area, I still am very pleased to see the emergence of good competitive programs coming out of the southwest. Also tends to be an entertaining thread!

Which Highly Touted Luverne players were NONEXISTENT in the playoffs?hawkenjonny wrote:Ouch! Be careful SouthernFan to practice what you preach. Gunnar Olson had 10 points during the section playoff which consisted of 3 games.
Jaxon Nelson had 8 points
Chaz Smedsrud had 7
Toby Sengvongxay had 6
Logan Norman had 5.
Is a 2.5 point per game average for those "touted" players a non existent characteristic?
Same goes for New Ulm, Their "touted" players had over 2 points per game also.
What is your argument to promote your nonexistent statement? Seems like a very high production rate for a player to be deemed Nonexistent.

I'm sure he meant non-existant in class AA.notTONIGHT wrote:Which Highly Touted Luverne players were NONEXISTENT in the playoffs?hawkenjonny wrote:Ouch! Guess I was thinking more of section semi, final, and state tournament. Didn't see anything from the early rounds. Olson was productive, but is NOT the kid all you 3A people rave about. The 8th grader had a couple. Otherwise not much out of the ones you mentioned. Early playoff games in 3A are pretty fluffy (imo). At state, which I saw some of, wasn't super impressed with some of your mentioned players. But obviously didn't watch all year, Luverne put up huge goal numbers. Don't have a stroke this early in the forum year Herb.

Pretty defensive. Sorry if one of those players that didn't put up numbers late in playoff run or tourney is close to home (or in it most likely). Just looked at some numbers after people start mentioning d1. D1 prospects put up numbers against the best competition typically which I didn't see out of some of your list. They could prove me (and all the other stupid people out there) wrong. Relax Herb-I'm still in Luverne's corner and so are many other hockey fans up my way as they are doing some nice things obviously.

Yes, exactly. A player putting up multiple points against a weaker opponent means little. What they can do with good competition ie usually late section/state tournament games is a better measuring stick for how they will fare later. The ability may be there, just have to see it in tougher games. With some recognition, these up and coming teams will most likely get some better games for these future D1ers to showcase their skills.
Two of the five that NOTtonight mentioned are done playing so I don't think there heading to any d1 school. Of the other three mentioned none have committed to any d1 school. So let's take a step back here put the brakes on and see how this year goes before we throw around d1 for anyone in this section!
Has 3A ever had a player go one to play d1? Help me out here Herb...

The Cards faithful seem to be knocking the bloom off the flower. The last couple years when you've had something to prove to those teams bording South Dakota and Iowa, twin cities folk could get behind you, even jump on the bandwagon as you headed to state to take on other farm kids, and some of the smaller private schools. But now comparisons are being made to metro kids, and their parents on this forum will turn on you quickly. They'll need to see you knock the manure off your skates and beat a couple real teams.

Sections change, STA used to be in 3A, Red Wing was too.Whiner33 wrote: Has 3A ever had a player go one to play d1? Help me out here Herb...
If you're talking about the current 3A teams (15 years ago only New Ulm, Litchfield, and Fairmont played high school hockey) Jamie Hoffman from New Ulm was supposed to go to Minnesota until tDon decided he needed to go to the USHL first, Hoffman then signed with Colorado College and was headed there until the Dodgers signed him in late August and he ended up playing pro baseball.

The Dolder brother both played at Notre Dame and Martin played at Mankato.
Kids were great 3 sport athletes and helped Hutch to success and many sports not just hockey.
Ryan Dolder:
Raised in Hutchinson, Minn., a town of 10,000 people 60 miles west of Minneapolis (his family currently resides in Minneapolis suburb of Eden Prairie) ... played on youth hockey teams that struggled to skate enough players but went on to help his Hutchinson High School team secure program's first trip to state tournament ... captained hockey team to conference and regional titles as a senior ... all-city, all-conference and all-state as a senior ... set school season records for points (85), goals (45) and assists (40), in addition to career points (220) ... also played quarterback on Hutchinson football team, helping team claim three conference and regional titles and national rankings in his junior and senior seasons ... twice all-city, all-conference and all-state in football ... captained football team as a senior ... set school records for passing yards and touchdown passes ... lettered in golf as a freshman and sophomore, earning all-conference honors as a sophomore after helping Hutchinson capture regional golf title.
Kyle Dolder
Four-year letterwinner as a forward on the hockey team at Hutchinson High School ... twice named all-conference ... team captain as a senior ... helped team win sectional title in 1997 ... his freshman-year team went undefeated en route to 1995 conference and section titles ... totaled 49 points in 25 games as a senior

NU, Litch, and Redwing used to be in 1a Along with Rochester Lourdes, who had the Pohls, Taylors, Gills, Harringtons, Brunkhorsts, Thauwalds ect go on. Fairmont had BJ Abel go on to captain Mankato (although he played a year of Bantams in Rochester and another at Mayo before moving on to the mustangs). And of course Hoffman ended up playing for Des Moines and had signed to go to CC before taking NU to within 1 out of the Legion World Series (which they incidentally lost to the Rochester Aces, which consisted of a pile of Lourdes players) and deciding to sign with the Dodgers right before he was to depart to CC.goldy313 wrote:Sections change, STA used to be in 3A, Red Wing was too.Whiner33 wrote: Has 3A ever had a player go one to play d1? New Willmar Coach .... their Bantam A Coach
Willmar Activities Director Ryan Blahosky announced late Friday afternoon that Jamie Hagen, a 1990 Willmar graduate, has been hired as the head coach of the boys hockey program.
Hagen has been head coach of the A Bantam program in his hometown. Hagen succeeds another Willmar grad Dan Tollefson, head coach since 2007-08, who resigned.

Section 3A being represented nicely in the Elite League. Toby Sengvongxay with the game tying goal late in the game today. Also, Chaz Smedsrud leads team great plains currently with 8 points.

I was wondering this also. I remember the luverne faithfuls saying it was harder to get better teams on the schedule due to geography and that stuff. I thought they won the schwans tourney they were in, do they usually bump you up into the next best schwans tourney after winning 1 of those tournies? Seems like that could be an opportunity for them to get some better teams on the schedule. Be interesting to see how they do in the state tourney if they make it back, with a year of experience under their belts and hopefully a better draw then drawing a hermantown for their 1st game.BP wrote:Did they upgrade their non-conference schedule at all? I think T-G, but anyone else?

I know for the Schwan's, they had the option of moving up to the bronze division because they won the tournament, but they elected to stay down in the Open division, which I guess doesn't make much sense to me seeing they are saying they want to play better competition. That would've been a good opportunity for that.

Why would they stay in the Open Division?! Anyone in the know out there have some insight here? From what I have seen of the Reebok and Elite leagues the Luverne programs at several levels are all about getting some recognition out there in scoutland? Why back away from potentially tougher competition when it is available? Maybe there is a reason we out of towners don't know. Anyone? Herb?

Sad they stayed in the Open Division I honestly think even in the Open they will encounter all they want.hawkenjonny wrote:Why would they stay in the Open Division?! Hutch and New Ulm are still my two picks.
New Ulm is Bringing almost EVERYONE back and Hutch with Cowger and the Junior Class should be very strong.
Willmar, LDC and Marshall will all be right there.
Should be a fun Section to watch
